The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 11th. There will be pumpkins, a farm stand, hay maze, pony rides, craft vendors and much more, along with the usual exhibits that the Game Farm provides during the spring and summer seasons. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with prices to be announced in the near future. The Game Farm is also looking for vendors for the Fall Festival. Youth Empowerment Institute Inc. and the Office of Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs along with Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County Inc. will be holding its 1st Annual Long Island African American Heritage Parade and Festival on Saturday, September 28th, at 11 a.m. The parade scenic routes where you can capture history being taken place will be starting on Nassau Road in Roosevelt, alongside the Western Beef parking Lot and ending between Washington Avenue and Front Street in Hempstead. This is a parade that you don’t want to miss, bringing together the community to celebrate a day of fun and festivities. The parade is set to bring together the leading civic organizations, business community, nonfor-profits and citizens on Long Island for a

festive event. The parade will be celebrating long Island’s African American Community rich cultural history. The parade and festival is set to host a variety of performances that will have you dancing and singing throughout this historic event, and speakers will enlighten you on the importance of the rich heritage of African Americans on Long Island. There will be a variety of fine cuisines from the African American Diaspora. With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North ShoreLIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event. Many doctors, nurses and staff members from CNI’s

Brain Aneurysm Center will also be in attendance to show their support of the many patients they have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye, and loss of sensation.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.; at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 and includes the cost of parking and snacks.

The women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) return home after more than four months of away bouts across the Northeast. On Saturday, September 28th, they will be face-off against their toughest opponent yet, the Corporal Punishers from the Jerzey Derby Brigade of Morristown, New Jersey. Spectators can expect a night of hard-hitting, fast paced action, with plenty of bumps and bruises between the teams. Raffles from local businesses, live entertainment and refreshments, provided by the Port Jefferson Brewing Company and Tag Beverage, will all be available at the bout.

SIDR returns to their home rink for the bout, World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, which is located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. Spectators who want to get close to the action are encouraged to bring their own chair for rinkside seating. There is also a balcony for those who prefer a bird’s eye view. Back To School Safety Tips Fall is the time of year when kids return to school routines and buses are back on our roadways. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco offers the following tips to ensure the safety of school children and motorists during hectic school mornings and when they return home in the afternoons. • Do not text or talk on the phone while driving. This type of distracted driving could have tragic consequences, especially when there are children playing near bus stops. • Stop your car far enough from all school buses to allow children the space to safely enter and exit their bus. Most

accidents happen within ten feet of a stopped bus. • Watch out for children walking to and from their bus stop. Oftentimes kids will walk in the street, and fail to look both ways. Slow down to give yourself more control over your vehicle in the event a child does something unpredictable. • If you see a child crossing the road ahead of your car, even if you have the legal right-of-way, do not rev your engine or beep the horn to encourage them to move faster. This could cause the child to become frightened and lead to an injury. • Never pass a school bus on the right. It is illegal and dangerous.

• Never block a crosswalk when stopped at a red light or at a stop sign. This could force the young pedestrians to walk outside the designated safety zone. Always wait for children to cross the street completely before proceeding. • Pay close attention to speed limits in school zones and to designated school crossing guards. • Finally, always use caution while driving during peak school-time rush hours. Take an extra moment to glance in your rear view and side view mirrors when pulling out of a driveway or when dropping your children off at school.
