It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Waterfront Festival Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The free event, sponsored by Trinity Solar and Connoisseur Media of Long Island, features children’s activities, face painting, learning exhibits on solar energy, environmental protection and sea life, New York State’s largest fish shaped cake and live musical entertainment by Captain Jack (Billy Joel Tribute), Beyond Fab (Beatles Tribute), Whiskey Road (country hits) and Randy Jackson of Zebra (acoustic Zeppelin).
Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m thrilled to bring this free familyfun event to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and invite residents of all ages to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” For the last 10 years, Supervisor Saladino hosted a Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo as a State Assemblyman. New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, new Councilman Lou Imbroto, and Mayor of Massapequa Park Jeff Pravato announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest, to collect food and supplies to support the ongoing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. “Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane the strongest storm to hit our country in 10 years,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Tragically, thousands of people are now seeking food and temporary shelter, as Hurricane Harvey has continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain in the impacted area. This is our opportunity to help give back to the many people and agencies who came to our aid following Superstorm Sandy. I urge everyone to donate what they can, as this is our chance to help our fellow
