Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

Computer Class Registration Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes to be held throughout the month of September at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville, announced Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia. The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. to seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program and begin on Tuesday, September 10th. “The Town is pleased to continue our partnership with EAC and offer these classes to seniors. These classes are wide ranging, and are geared towards those with limited prior experience with computers,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Keeping current with technology will open up new experiences

each and every day. For example, enrolling in these SeniorNet classes will enable you to learn how to send emails to your grandchildren and even chat with old friends in other states that you may have lost touch with.” Councilwoman Alesia noted that these classes are taught by volunteer

JOANIE’S GOODIES - Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joseph Pinto and Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto took part in the 4th Annual Joanie’s Goodies Bake Sale in Massapequa Park. Cassandra McMillan, joins with Jenna and Jaime Clougher and their mom, Jeanne, to coordinate the event in memory of the girls’ grandmother, Joanie. Rice Krispie treats, cookies and other tasty treats, as well as items such as sunglasses were sold and the earnings were donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

COMMUNITY DAY - The bit of rain on Sunday, August 18th did not deter Temple Sinai from hosting their OpenHouse/Event Day. Bobbie and the Strays of Freeport brought three beautifully adoptable dogs. Temple Sinai had collected contributions, which they thankfully appreciated. Camille from Philip Michael Salon of Seaford donated her services for hair donations of 10” or more to be sent to Locks of Love. United Skates of Seaford donated a classic birthday party for 10 children to be raffled off to a lucky child who was present. Calvert Manor Bagels of Seaford donated a delicious bagel and spread platter. New members, existing members, the religious school teachers, board members and the Rabbi enjoyed making crafts, face painting and getting together.

And be sure to use the Town’s group number, 1578, when you call, so the Town gets credit for the blood collected. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder who is there always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every two to three seconds,

someone in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives, the importance of donating blood comes into focus. There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular and free Co-ed Fall Walking Program is currently underway, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “Walking is an excellent form of exercise that is easy and low-impact that’s suitable for every age,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is an ideal form of activity for males and females for all fitness levels. Response to the Town-sponsored walking programs over the years has been enthusiastic. People join for the exercise, as well as the social aspect. Best of all, you can learn great tips on exercise while getting a workout for free!” The Town’s Fall Co-Ed Walking Program begins Monday, September 9th, and continues through Thursday, October 17th. The program will be held at both Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and John J. Burns Town Park in

Massapequa. “Every Monday and Wednesday, beginning September 9th, walkers will meet in front of the mansion at SyossetWoodbury Community Park for a 10 to 11 a.m. walk,” the Councilwoman said. “On Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning September 10th, walkers can meet in the parking lot to the left of the main entrance of John J. Burns Town Park for a 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. walk. Those who have the energy to walk more than once a week can certainly sign up for all the courses.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that Walking is simply one of the easiest — and safest — activities for burning calories and tuning up the cardiovascular system. “Walking is an activity for a lifetime,” she said. “In addition to the physical benefits, it’s an activity that is rejuvenating for the

mind, spirit and morale.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that registration forms can be obtained at Town Hall South and at the Recreation Office in the TOB Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 121 pints of blood at its August 1st drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives, but summer puts a strain on blood donations, so this kind of response is very heartening,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When broken down into component parts, each pint of blood could potentially help save three lives. That translates into 363 people who could benefit from these donations. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives. “Blood donors are heroes,” said Councilman Muscarella. “They keep our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood.
