Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, September 20th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone. “For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “All day people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the

precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.” C o u n c i l m a n Macagnone went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 677-5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. “By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Contrary to what people

may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “The longer this litter remains on our shorelines, the greater the damage will be to the environment. “If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, I invite you to join us on September 20th,” Councilman Macagnone said. “If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve our environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”

Of Deadlines & Days Off By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What to write... It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing. Makes for stimulating reading, right? Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option

of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or

two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. While many Town beaches are soon closing for the season, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson is pleased to announce that Tobay beach will be open for residents to enjoy the weekend following Labor Day (September 6-7). “I am very happy to announce that Tobay beach will re-open to the public on September 6th and 7th, giving residents an extended opportunity to enjoy a little more summer at Tobay,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “If you haven’t gotten around to going to the beach this summer, the weekend after Labor Day is the chance to catch up and have a fun day at the beach.” Councilwoman Johnson also noted that beach admission fees would still be collected for residents that do not have a seasonal sticker on their car. Bluefish Tournament Set If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up for the 29th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 14th, according to Councilman Joe Pinto. “The Town’s Bluefish Tournament is a great allday sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” Councilman Pinto said, adding that the tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The entrance fee for the tournament, which is open to anglers of all ages, is $30 for Town residents and $40 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early.” Councilman Pinto went on to say that additional rules for the tournament, which is sponsored by the Town’s Department of Parks and Oyster Bay Marine Supply, are contained in the registration form, which is available at all Town facilities and at Oyster Bay Marine Supply, 294 South Street, Oyster

Bay. Councilman Pinto noted that all contestants must be pre-registered. All those who register before September 7th will receive a tournament T-shirt. All contestants will automatically be entered in a special raffle, with great prizes including Mercury inflatable boats and Mercury outboards, rods, reels, ice chests, water skis, dinners for two and much more. Councilman Pinto continued on to say that along with plaques, winners of first through 10th places will receive gift certificates in the following amounts: first place $2,000; second place $1,000; third place - $750; fourth place - $600; fifth and sixth places - $500; seventh and eighth places - $400; ninth and 10th places - $300. Winners of 11th and 12th places will receive a $200 gift certificate and 13th, 14th and 15th place winners will each received a $100 gift certificate. Raffle winners must be present to receive their prizes, which will be presented at the tailgate party scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Councilman Pinto indicated that the cosponsors of this year’s Bluefish Tournament include: Bowne AE&T Group, Bridge Marina, Greg Van Dyke Building, BMW of Oyster Bay, Duffy’s Bait and Tackle, Compass Rose, Mercury Outboards, Mill Max Corporation, Sagamore Collision, North Shore Fire Equipment, and Zorn’s Chicken and Ribs. “Fishing is indeed a sport for all ages that offers everything one would want for a day of fun … the tranquility of being out in the water, the adrenaline rush of feeling that first big tug on your fishing line and, in the case of our tournament, the spirit of competition,” Councilman Pinto said. “Add to that the possibility of winning impressive prizes and you have the Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament. Memorial Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites all residents, their families and friends to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach. “The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.”

The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. “What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” the Supervisor said. “The men and women whose names are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The event on September 9th will include a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe

music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. “I hope that all residents will join us on Tuesday, September 9th to mark the 13th anniversary and honor the memory of our beloved friends and neighbors who perished on September 11th, 2001,” Supervisor Venditto concluded. “Being with our family, friends and neighbors helps us pay tribute to our loved ones and share in the collective memory of those we have lost.” Families of 9-11 victims interested in being on our mailing list, please contact the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services at 516.797.7900.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, but doctors have yet to make any true conclusions on how to reverse the diagnosis.” Now in its seventh year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a wellfunded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and corporate donations. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can

lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed

South Shore School Of Dance

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 31st anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where “only mothers” teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American dance delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she

has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a $6,500 scholarship to NYU for dance education and a $2,000 academic scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and is now under contract with the company. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally, across Long Island, as well as nationally, in New York City. Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Streetdance, Modern and Irish step; as well as Acro, Musical Theatre and Terrific Toddler Time for both boys and girls. The phrases “I’ll do it myself” or “I’ll try” can be music to a kindergarten teacher’s ears. Parents may be in a rush and find it easier to dress kids or get them snacks. But doing everything for kids puts them at a disadvantage. Independent streaks can help kids adjust to school.

Kindergarteners may have to go to the bathroom and wash up independently. They also may have to fasten buttons, open up lunches and hang up coats. Children who cannot handle such tasks may struggle to adjust to a school environment. • Can my child recognize basic letters and numbers? Children entering kindergarten should know most letters by sight and be able to count to 10. Preparing for kindergarten can be fun and does not require flash cards or homework. Encourage kids to count objects in the world around them or do some preliminary reading by recognizing letters on signs at stores or places in the neighborhood. Kindergarten readiness is determined by a variety of factors, including age, school assessment, enthusiasm about learning, and signs of independence.

Organize Your Locker with following a few rules set forth by the school. Students may overlook the importance of organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized requires some effort and upkeep. • Color code the locker. Grouping subjects by color can make it easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. If materials necessary for math class are colored in red, students can quickly find these materials en route to class. • Remove trash. Remove anything that does not belong in the locker, including garbage and old projects. Students should not use their lockers to store items they don’t need for school. That only takes away space for the stuff kids do need for class. • Group according to schedule. In addition to employing a color-coding

system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon. This makes it less likely that students will forget supplies they need for class. • Think about extra accessories. Lockers have the basics, which are usually a shelf and a hook for coats. All sorts of locker accessories exist to customize the interior. An extra shelf may be helpful for storing books or smaller supplies. Look into a message board or more hooks that can be hung on the inside of the door. Figure out what your child can use to keep items from piling up on the floor. • Develop a maintenance plan. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. This can be remedied by maintaining a cleaning schedule for a locker. A few minutes each week can keep a locker clean and clear of clutter.

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year. The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles. Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun

and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines. • Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives. • Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians. • Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists. • Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner. • Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their

seat without making a fuss. • Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap. • Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion. • Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times. • Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situations that will cause driver distraction. • Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit. • Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers. • Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus. • Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.
