The event allowed cats and kittens to adopted for free; in all, 17 cats and kittens found their forever homes during the event. As a way of showing appreciation to all resident golfers, the Town of Oyster Bay Honorable Joseph Colby Golf Course will host a special appreciation day on Monday, September 28th, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Lottery applications are currently being accepted to participate in the special event. “I instituted these special golf days as a way of showing appreciation to all those Town residents who love the sport of golf,” Supervisor Venditto stated. ”On September 28th, golfers, selected by lottery, will have the opportunity to enjoy the Town’s nationally-acclaimed, par 70 golf course.” All residents of the Town of Oyster Bay are eligible to enter a lottery for the chance to be selected to play in the event. Residents can submit their Lottery application at the Town of

Oyster Bay Golf Course, located in Woodbury. Applications for the lottery must be received at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course by Tuesday, September 8th by 3 p.m., and the lottery will be drawn the following week on Tuesday, September 15th at 1:30 p.m. If selected to participate, the $25.00 per player lottery fee should be paid at the Golf Course no later than Tuesday, September 22nd. By winning this lottery, each selected player will be entitled to one eighteenhole round of golf, golf cart transportation, food, beverages and the chance to win rafﬂe prizes. The event will have a limit of 100 players or 25 foursomes. Any single, double or triple player applications will be combined with other applicants to form foursomes. All players at the Supervisor’s Golf Day will receive a gift bag for

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 29th anniversary of teaching. A mother of 21 year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

A number administrators in the Massapequa School District were assigned to new posts in the 2015-2016 school year, while others have been hired to fill vacated positions - actions spurred by the retirements of longtime staff members. On the elementary level, veteran assistant principals settled into new homes in the district while two others were hired after Birch Lane Assistant Principal Christine Harris and McKenna Elementary School Assistant Principal Diane Sales retired in June. Unqua Elementary School Assistant Principal Ryan Aliperti has moved to Lockhart Elementary

School. Fairfield Elementary School Assistant Principal Stephen Aspetti has shifted to Birch Lane Elementary School and Lockhart Elementary School Assistant Principal Laura McConnell is now at McKenna Elementary School. Joining the district as Assistant Principal at Fairfield Elementary School is Kristi Gerhard, formerly a fifth–grade teacher in the Long Beach School District. Dr. Kristi Keingstein has been hired as Assistant Principal at Unqua Elementary School. She joins the district after serving the East Northport School District as a special education teacher for the

past seven years. On the secondary level, Edward Kemnitzer, former Executive Assistant to the Principal of Berner Middle School, is now Executive Assistant for Digital Curriculum Support and Development, replacing Jennifer Steigerwald who retired in June. Theresa Donohue, who was an English Language Arts Coordinator for grades six through twelve in the Commack School District, has filled Kremnitzer’s former position. Yvonne Knott, former Executive Assistant to the Principal at Massapequa High School, has taken on the role of Executive

Assistant for Information Management, replacing Margaret Colucci who also retired. Jordan McCaw has moved to Knott’s former role. His previous post as Secondary Supervisor of Special Education has been filled by Danielle Silbert, who served the district as a Chairperson of the Committee on Special Education (CSE). Chanah Greenstein, a psychologist with the district, has moved into Silbert’s former position. Serving as Chairperson of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) for the district is Savrena Riddle, a speechlanguage pathologist

who has worked with special education students at Unqua Elementary School for the past 11 years. Veteran teacher and literacy coach, Tina Farrell, replaced Marlene Feinberg as Chairperson for Comprehensive Literacy after she retired from the district. Moving back into her post as Chairperson of Health is longtime health teacher Denise Baldinger. The district also welcomes Brian Trapani as Curriculum Associate for Social Studies, replacing Brian Dowd who retired in June, and Beth Adler as Art Chairperson, replacing Barbara Mims who also retired in June.

Mr. Trapani was formerly the Coordinator of Social Studies in the Commack School District and Mrs. Adler was a high school art educator in the New York City Museum School. “The collective talents of these professionals will serve our district well as we set new goals for the future success of our students,” said Superintendent Lucille F. All ticket and camping prices are listed as the pre-tax values. There will also be a 5K Trail Fun Run on Sunday, September 6th, open free of charge to any ticketholders. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes participants through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. An Awards Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. and all runners will receive a Bradstock XXII mug. Participants are invited to tour the grounds after the race, or return when the festival begins. To sign up, visitors must select the Trail Run option when purchasing their tickets. All Bradstock guests are cautioned not to remove their festival wristband if they plan to leave and reenter the camp grounds. Removal of the wristband will result in having to purchase an additional ticket to the performances. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating. Liberty Medal Presented New York State Senator Michael Venditto presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Christopher Burke, a 20 year-old from Massapequa, for heroically saving a woman’s life. Christopher is currently, one of several life-guards employed at the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center in East Meadow and has been a trained and certified lifeguard for the past five years. In July of 2015, while on vacation at the beach in Westhampton, Christopher Burke heard an exhausted

woman yelling for help while she was swimming in the ocean; using his skills and training, he rushed into the water and safely pulled her onto the shore. “Christopher’s spontaneous and heroic actions helped save a life. By acting immediately as soon as he thought something was wrong, Christopher saved those precious few moments which often means the difference between someone living or dying. He’s a true hero and it is my pleasure to present him with this much deserved honor,” said

CHARITY RUN - On July 7th, Synergy Fitness of Massapequa held a charity run for their group fitness director Tracy Jolly. Tracy has been recently diagnosed with leukemia and has been positively responding to treatments. Synergy asks for everyone in the community to pray for a speedy recovery, and thanks all the participants in the charity run for their support.

Twelve Skydivers (mostly Rotarians) raised many thousands of dollars in sponsorships for Rotary Jump for Life, program, so as to fund pediatric surgery for indigent children this past Saturday August 22nd. This wonderful and unique event was deemed a huge success, and many children will receive the precious Gift of Life, because of this. Gift of life’s mission

is to provide hope to children from developing countries with heart disease regardless of their gender, creed, or national origin, by supporting autonomous Gift of Life programs in their efforts to care for these children in need, and coordinating the development of sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery and aftercare programs in select countries, through the empowerment of their

healthcare professionals. The Gift of Life Program, which began in 1975 on Long Island, is today a worldwide Rotary International Service Program. Its primary purpose is to help those needy children who require corrective heart surgery secure another lease on life through the miracle of heart surgery in a Gift of Life Participating Hospital.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Eighth Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities on Sunday, September 27th, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. The event will be held rain or shine. “Studies show that one in 68 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Currently, there is no known cause or cure for autism. Since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, many treatments and therapies have become available, but doctors still
