At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the Town will host a Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival on Saturday, September 15th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach Marina. This free event features children’s activities, face-painting, snapper fishing, police boat demonstrations, marine and outdoor exhibits, New York State’s largest fish-shaped cake and live musical performances. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is thrilled to offer this free family-fun Waterfront Festival at TOBAY Beach. Residents of all ages are invited to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” Live musical performances will be provided by Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, as well as Steel Margarita. Musicians on the March Disney is this year’s theme for the Massapequa High School marching band, which will perform its show during halftime of all home football games and at the Newsday Marching Band Festival in October. A voluntary camp was held at the high school from August 14th-16th, and a majority of the marching band’s 152 members attended. Band directors Eva Marie Arnold and Andrew Dwork led the
camp along with fellow Massapequa band teachers Rob Giannotti, Gary Loock, Mike Perticone and Jessica Wyman. Andrea Gropf coordinated the flag line. Senior Julian Alberto is the drum major and Sarah Benedict is assistant drum major. On the football field, band members practiced marching technique, while in the auditorium and little theater they rehearsed music for this year’s show. It will highlight Disney

Celebrate St. James is a local non-profit organization, which was created with the mission to preserve and celebrate St. James’ rich history, while inspiring an appreciation and knowledge of the arts in the community. They continue to work hard to make advancements toward becoming a cultural arts center, which the town once was. Through events such as free concerts, house and garden tours, comedy shows and more, they are very motivated to revive this town. New Ideas at Science Camp to follow. They had to create an underwater scene in which their moving robot would activate a motion sensor and turn on a light. Robotic Pet Vet had children exploring robot dogs to diagnose problems. Each student constructed a dog park and got to decorate their own robot to take home. Mod My Mini Mansion had students exploring alternative energy solutions to power their small homes. In Stick to It, they had to come up with inventions to solve different challenges, such as making a contraption
to pick up coins. The young creators could find much of what they needed in the Inventor Supply Room, a classroom filled with cardboard boxes, newspapers, string and plastic containers of all shapes and sizes. “Camp Invention is a wonderful opportunity for children to not only explore scientific concepts, but to work together as a team,” said program coordinator Elizabeth Natke. “It’s just a fun way to learn.” In addition to the teachers running each center, Camp Invention was supported by high
school counselors and middle school counselorsin-training. They were responsible for bringing the children to each station and helping them with their projects. “It’s cool showing the children how technology works and I like seeing them enjoying the activities,” said Berner Middle School eighth-grader Willis Clark, a counselor-in-training and former camper. “It had a lot of good memories attending Camp Invention and now I am learning how to be a good leader.”

Children turned their imaginations into creations at Camp Invention, a national science and technology camp hosted by the Massapequa School District each summer. This year’s program was held from August 13thAugust 17th at McKenna Elementary School and was open to students entering first through sixth grades. This year’s theme was “Fast Forward” and the young scientists rotated through different centers each day. In Optibot, students learned about sensors, and designed tracks for the small robots

New Teachers Welcomed The Massapequa School District formally welcomed more than 20 educators at its two-day new teacher orientation on August 22nd-23rd in the Teacher Learning Center at McKenna Elementary School. Many of the new faculty members are joining the district for the first time, while others are moving into permanent positions. They will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels throughout Massapequa’s nine schools.
Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis greeted the teachers and asked them to share the reasons they decided to enter the education profession. She read the book “Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden” to inspire them to become the kinds of teachers who help their students grow and flourish. Teachers received their Chromebooks and learned about the advantages of the district’s 1:1 Learning Anytime, Anywhere initiative that provides
students in grades 3-12 with their own devices. They were also able to meet the district’s technology learning coaches, who will work with them to integrate technology into classroom instruction. “The job is not the job until the students get here,” said Brian Conboy, the interim principal of Massapequa High School, about his excitement for the start of the new school year. The Massapequa School District selected the experienced educator and administrator to serve as interim principal of the 1,650-student high school
for the entire 2018-2019 school year. A thorough and extensive search will begin later this year for a permanent principal. Mr. Conboy brings 33 years of educational experience, including 21 as an administrator, to Massapequa. He spent his entire career in the neighboring Seaford School District until his retirement in 2017. After
serving as a math and science teacher at the middle school, he was the high school assistant principal for a year, middle school principal for seven years, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and personnel for six years, and superintendent for seven years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in educator from
SUNY Geneseo, a master’s degree in education from Hofstra University and a certificate of advanced studies in educational administration from Hofstra. Mr. Conboy is a Massapequa resident and his son, Sean (2013), and daughter, Katie (2015), are graduates of Massapequa High School, which last year was named a
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. He said he looks forward to working with the experienced and talented faculty and administrators to uphold that tradition of excellence. “I know that Massapequa is a great district because by children were educated here,” Mr. Conboy said. “I’m pleased to have the
opportunity to give back to the school district and to the community. There is a long history here of providing a safe, vibrant educational environment which reflects the values of the community, and I look to carry that on.” Concrete Concrete was invented by the Ancient Romans.
