Students spent a week getting their hands dirty as the Massapequa School District and Camp Invention partnered for a weeklong science camp at the Ames Campus from August 8th-August 12th. Camp Invention has been a summer staple in the district for a decade, with lessons that connect science, technology, engineering and innovation. An enthusiastic group of 110 elementary-age students spent the week rotating through five stations where they participated in discovery activities. “They get to explore a variety of different science topics,” said Elizabeth Natke, a retired Massapequa

teacher who directed the camp. “Everything is very hands-on. There’s a lot of team work involved so it gives them an opportunity to cooperate and try to and solve real-world problems.” One popular class was “I Can Invent.” Students worked in teams to take apart old electronics and toys, and then used the parts to create their own inventions. In “Crickobot,” children built their own robotic crickets fueled by solar cells. “The Lab” had students participating in several experiments such as making slime, while “Epic Park” had them creating cutting-edge designs for an island theme park. “Camp Invention Games” fostered

curiosity and out-of-thebox thinking. Madeline Douglas, a fourth-grader at Unqua Elementary School, said the camp was a fun way to make new friends from other schools in the district. She especially liked learning about solar power. Jason McCauley, a fifth-grader at McKenna Elementary School, enjoyed learning how to use tools and developing his engineering skills. In addition to the teachers, students from Berner Middle School, Ames and Massapequa High School served as counselors to support their children in their scientific endeavors.

The Power of Positivity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

With a growing number of jobs being created in the robotics field, the Massapequa School District is doing its part to prepare students for career opportunities. About 20 sevenththrough ninth-graders participated in a Robotics Camp at Berner Middle School from August 8th11th. Students used Lego kits and computers to build and program their robots, with the support of camp director Brian Vanek, a high school technology teacher. “I just want them to enjoy it and get excited

about doing robotics,” Vanek said, adding that the students were given much freedom to design, build, program and test their robots. That structure allowed them to work in teams and develop their problem-solving skills. One of the highlights of the week was the Battlebots competition in which students built their own robots and tested them against each other in a ring. Lucas Tonello, who will enter ninth grade at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, said he would consider robotics

as a possible career. It was his third year participating in the summer camp. “Here you can be creative with what you build,” he said. “I like building stuff and tinkering and programming.” Massapequa offers robotics as part of seventh- and eighth-grade technology classes along with dedicated courses at the high school. Berner Middle School also has an after-school robotics club in which students participate in the FIRST Lego League competition with other schools on Long Island.

Honor Flight Coming

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and

are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the

spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. “The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread the word to WWII veterans and their family members that Big Apple Honor Flight is here to serve New York City’s heroes of the Greatest Generation,” said Becky Maher, Co-Founder and Chairwoman of Big Apple Honor Flight. “It is our goal to also recruit a

few good men and women from the NYC area who have a shared interest in honoring our veterans to fill some important volunteer roles over the next few months. It takes a village, or in this case, a “city that never sleeps,” to put together a true Honor Flight experience. We look forward to working with the talent and patriotism that we know resides in the Big Apple.” Big Apple Honor Flight is a hub of the national Honor Flight Network whose mission is to transport veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor and to receive the recognition they deserve for all of their sacrifices. BAHF’s first one-day, all-expense-paid

trip for these veterans will depart from John F. Kennedy International Airport on an American Airlines charter flight. The national Honor Flight Network includes more than 130 hubs in 44 states across the country. Since its inception in 2005, over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America
