She was honored in a ceremony at Farmingdale Public Library on August 10th, during which she received a special citation from Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt. Haley dedicates her life to her dancing. She also sings, acts and does gymnastics. Haley is a rare talent and unique to find to say the least. Haley has been dancing all her life and has achieved worldwide excellence. Haley is a company dancer at Jennifer Napolitano’s School Of Performing Arts in Seaford New York. JNPA Dance has produced TV and Broadway Stars as well as a Tony Award Winner! Haley’s Mother Melanie travels on a regular basis from Connecticut to Long Island NY for Haley to train intensely by Jennifer Napolitano. Haley is a regional and national overall high score solo champion, an undefeated title holder and judges choice winner nationwide! Haley has achieved worldwide recognition for her brilliant technique for an 11 year old young dancer and has been recognized for her star struck stage presence. Haley was born to dance. Jennifer Napolitano is a world renowned broadway performer, national dance and talent judge, winner of TOP Choreographer & teacher! Five Massapequa High School recent graduates set a new record for the district and raised the bar on student achievement when they were named winners in the National Merit Scholarship Program. As they enter college this fall, Joseph Mogavero, Melanie Sheehan, Robyn Tse, Joanna Urli and Joseph Zappa are considered among the top one percent of the nation’s brightest and most promising students. Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Family Football Night Sports enthusiasts from throughout the Town of Oyster Bay are invited to attend a Family Football Night at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Wednesday, August 28th, at 7 p.m. Residents will feel like a part of the action during the evening’s planned activities, including a live interactive scrimmage with players from LIU Post. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto said the unique event will allow fan to go inside the game and experience football from a different perspective. “Coaches of the LIU Post Pioneers have agreed to wear a microphone during the practice, giving attendees the feeling of being inside the huddle,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Attendees will discover some of the complex strategy and nuances that go into an NCAA football program.” Admission will be free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring a can of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger. The event will be preceded by a youth clinic featuring players and coaches from LIU Post, as well as a player BBQ, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. “The Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to support the sport of football,

Carol Muscarella, the principal of John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District, was selected as a recipient of the 17th Assembly District’s Women of Distinction Award for 2013. She was honored in a ceremony at Farmingdale Public Library on August 10th, during which she received a special citation from Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt. “Good deeds may go unnoticed and unappreciated,” Mr. McKevitt said in addressing Mrs. Muscarella. “Therefore,
it is my pleasure to offer my gratitude for the devotion you show to your community by hosting this special event.” The award recognizes women who make their community a better place to live in. With more than 30 years of professional experience, Mrs. Muscarella provided speech and language pathology services to preschoolers through a private practice that she ran from 1991-2001 and has utilized these skills while serving in the Plainedge School District since 2001. Many stay-at-home parents find themselves in the similar position of struggling to help their kids with homework because they are not familiar with the latest
teaching method, or are trying to revisit a subject they learned 20 years ago. A new solution is open to all Massapequa kids and the students of the neighboring towns. Massapequa’s Grace Day School is introducing Above & Beyond, a program that offers, three different after-school options for families: basic homework help, specialized enrichment (math, Latin, science,
art) to advance your child’s educational opportunities, or just a safe play environment both indoors and outdoors on a jungle gym and swings or green sports field. Available to children preschool through eighth grade, convenient hourly, weekly, trimester fees and later pick-up time (6:30pm), allow parents much more flexibility than traditional after-

Many parents need a pay-by-thehour drop-off program while they run errands, shuttle a sibling to a sports practice, or could use a teacher’s help on an unfamiliar homework subject. Programs like these often come at a high price, or with a long-term commitment, and don’t necessarily even offer a playground, sports field or an actual teacher. “We offer a safe
environment where children are able to further develop their individual skills and gifts in a structured learning environment balanced with fun.” said Fr. Walter Hillebrand, the program director, further explained,” Many parents that commute to work need coverage until 6:30 p.m. Some parents just need us for one or two hours.” This program opens
this September at the Massapequa campus from 3 to 6:30 p.m. each day of the Grace School calendar. It is open to all students in the community.
