he Suffolk County Dog Obedience Training Club, based in Huntington and affiliated with the American Kennel Club, presented a two-day program of basic obedience and tricks to the children with developmental disabilities attending the Hagedorn Little Village School. At the conclusion of the program, the dogs’ handlers allowed the children to share some hugs and pet the dogs. A great time was had by all.

Haley’s Mother Melanie travels on a regular basis from Connecticut to Long Island NY for Haley to train intensely by Jennifer Napolitano. Haley is a regional and national overall high score solo champion, an undefeated title holder and judges choice winner nationwide! Haley has achieved worldwide recognition for her brilliant technique for an 11 year old young dancer and has been recognized for her star struck stage presence. Haley was born to dance. About Haley’s experience on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition Season 2 1,000 dancers auditioned nationwide and only 11 title holders were selected to participate in Season Two of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Haley Huelsman was one of the 11 chosen and she describes working with Abby Lee Miller as, “the most incredible and memorable experience of her entire life.” After participating in the show Haley says life will never be the same, she will forever nurture her gift of dance and she’s fully committed to stay one hundred percent dedicated to her art. Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile will benefit from the 9th Annual Arthur and William J. Pace Memorial Golf Outing. They are proud to Honor the Late Ron Lupo a generous support to Angela’s House, a loving father and friend to many in the community. Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 31st anniversary of teaching. A mother of 23-year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where “only mothers” teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American dance delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she

Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive

HCCS has once again teamed up with Adopt-ASoldier Platoon and Nassau Health Care Corporation/ NuHealth System to help our deployed military units overseas. In 2008, HCCS and NuHealth sent hundreds of colorful scrubs for one of the hospitals in Kuwait. The chaplain reported that the brown scrubs they use were depressing and it would cheer up the troops to get colorful scrubs. The hospital staff were thrilled to receive the colorful scrubs. Recently, they received another request from Adopta-Soldier Platoon for regular scrubs from a forward military medical unit in Afghanistan. Walter Lazauskas, NuHealth’s laundry director, immediately answered the call and put together boxes of blue scrubs for the troops. Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon works with various deployed military units, sending care cartons and engaging in special projects with the goal of improving morale and letting the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen know that we care.
