The Town of Oyster Bay Sports Commission (TOBSC) will host another presentation of its TOBSC Symposium Series, this one focusing on Signs, Symptoms and Treatment of Concussions on Tuesday, August 12th at 7 p.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. The program will be led
by TOBSC Board Member William J. Schwarz, P.T, P.C. and provide invaluable information to all attendees. Dr. Schwarz, who played Division 1 lacrosse for Villanova University and oversees Pro Sports Care of Long Island, located in Massapequa, is well known and highly respected in the field of sports-related
physical therapy. He is often sought out by the area’s top athletes. This symposium one of an ongoing series of free forums scheduled and sponsored by the TOBSC. “This symposium is particularly timely for any parents, coaches and players involved in football,” Schwarz said. “Registration will be held online at www.oysterbay-
sportscommission.org or at the door from 6 to 7 p.m. The forum will not only focus on treating football related concussions, but, perhaps more importantly, on how to help avoid them by utilizing proper technique and instruction.” said TOBSC

NATIONAL HONOR - John Lantino, age 15, had the honor of competing in the AAU Tae Kwon Do National Championship early this month. The competition commenced on June 30th and ended July 5th. John won many matches in the 15-17 age division for Black Belt fighters. He received 2nd place, which qualifies him to compete at Team Trails in September for a spot on the National Team. John trains everyday at Champions Tae Kwon Do in Massapequa with his teammates and coach, Master Clinton Oh.

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I
attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

Celebrity Golf Classic Held The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. The foundation’s
Man of the Year, Bobby Cunningham, Jr., owner of Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., was saluted at the evening dinner. “Bobby Cunningham, Jr., is an individual the foundation “The Celebrity Golf Classic grows bigger each year. The foundation needs and appreciates the generosity of those who attend. All the members of our board and I welcome our supporters and thank the celebrity golfers. This is the 29th Classic and once again it has given us the perfect opportunity to interact with friends and foster support for our mission,” Lyons said. During the day golfers had the opportunity to challenge Lyons’ golfing skills at one special par 3 hole. The course was full
of fun activities and food. Members of The New York Flight Crew Cheerleaders interacted with golfers who also enjoyed cigars from Davidoffof Geneva (NY) Inc., and cocktails provided by Georgi Vodka. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Efforts are made to raise over $200,000 each year to support the foundation’s wish granting program. The primary sponsors of this year’s MLF Celebrity Golf Classic include Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Riggio, The LandTek Group, Milburn Flooring, Cunningham Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., and Star Industries/Georgi Vodka. Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the foundation after his own
personal experiences with sickness and the deaths of close family and friends. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in 1982. Since that time the organization has granted over 6,500 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. Playing golf or attending the dinner helps to provide the foundation with the resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. at Stony Brook: On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (Harvard, 2008), which won five prizes, including the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians for best-written non-fiction book on an American theme, and Trees in Paradise: A California History (Norton, 2013), which received a John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. He frequently gives guest lectures and radio interviews. His essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as Science, Environmental History, Reviews in American History, High Country News, Western American Literature, and Religion Dispatches. Currently, Farmer is working on two book projects: Ancient Trees in Modern Times (a history of the long search for the world’s oldest living thing, and a meditation on the future of long-lived trees
in the Anthropocene), and The Aerial View (a global study of aerial photography, aerial surveillance, satellite imagery, and remote sensing). Farmer earned a BA from Utah State University, an MA from the University of Montana and a PhD from Stanford University. He has been the recipient of fellowships from the Stanford Humanities Center, the HuntingtonUSC Institute on California and the West, the National Humanities Center, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah. The opposite of a lifetime achievement award, the Hiett Prize seeks to encourage future leaders in the humanities by recognizing their early accomplishments and potential and assisting their ongoing work through a cash award of $50,000.

Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose work shows extraordinary promise and has a significant public component related to contemporary culture. A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian
with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats and the ways human beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute. “His still-unfolding work in a relatively new field of the humanities is of such a high order that it promises to become a model for others who will follow him.” “I’m honored to receive this recognition of my work,” said Farmer. “My area of scholarship overlaps with landscape history and cultural geography, but my career project is larger.
