Gone Too Soon last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reﬂection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

National Qualifiers

Ultimate Champions Taekwondo Association is comprised of 15 Taekwondo schools throughout the New York City and Long Island area. They would like to congratulate all of their athletes who qualified to compete at the National level. Sixty-seven UCTA students traveled to Ft. Lauderdale, FL to compete in the 2015 Amateur Athletic Union National Taekwondo Championships. Eleven of those students then

traveled to Austin, TX, to compete in the USA Taekwondo National Championships. These dedicated students have trained relentlessly with their Masters to prepare for the National competitions, and were rewarded for their efforts with 21 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals. They would like to specifically recognize the outstanding accomplishments of eight students. One athlete won his division and was

named AAU National Team Member. Six athletes qualified to compete in the National Team Trials in the Cadet and Junior divisions in August based on their exceptional performance. And finally, one local athlete will be competing in the USA Taekwondo Senior Team Trials, with the hopes of eventually making the USA Olympic Team. They are proving Themselves to be one of the top teams, not only in the New York area, but in the United States.

SALUTE TO AMERICA - The Salute to America concert performance by Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa as part of the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Music Under the Stars” summer program. Military veterans were recognized by the local legislators on this occasion, and Supervisor John Venditto presented a citation to event sponsor Michael Segreti of Astoria Bank for helping to make the “Salute to America” concert possible.

Assemblyman Joseph Saladino and town of Oyster Bay supervisor John Venditto recently attended the Dante Foundation’s annual scholarship event where 17 Italian-American

The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24 hour lacrosse game, was recently held at the Field of Dreams in Massapequa. Shootout for Soldiers is a fun lacrosse event for players and teams of all ability levels and ages. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players, where each

group take the field for one hour as well as teams that accommodate special needs participants. One of the highlighted games is a matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY. The event raises money for organizations that support those who served our Nation as well as those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The

beneficiaries of this year’s event are the Wounded Warrior Project, the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and Team Red, White and Blue. At the 2014 event, more than $80,000 was raised in support of the United States Armed Forces.

Learn to Skate at Oyster Bay Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this fall by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year. Registration for Series 1 (which runs September

8th through October 31st) will begin on August 10th. Those interested can register at the facility, online (www.TheRinx. com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

The program is seven weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series.

There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is comprised of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association.
