Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be

rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore

than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Pipeline Program

Twenty high achieving public school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, visited the Nassau University Medical Center along with their coordinator, Gina Granger. The minority high school students are part of the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, a special program for those exploring careers in

medicine. The students were introduced to the various health careers in NUMC, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the five LI Federally Qualified Health Centers by Kent Kessler, director of HR for NuHealth/NUMC. During the afternoon, the students also had an opportunity to meet Drs. Makaryus and Zeltser and find out about the cardiology program at

NUMC and to hear about the physicians’ experiences while in medical school and during their residencies and fellowships. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. NYPD Police Officer Brian Moore made the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed in the line of duty on May 4th,

2015. The Brian Moore Tournament for the Brian Moore Memorial Fund features many little league baseball teams from across Long Island playing in a tournament that honors Brian’s memory.
