On Tuesday, July 18th, Massapequa School District residents showed up in full force to let their voices be heard in support of the sixth grade move from elementary school to Berner Middle School. Parents in the town were outraged when a motion to rescind the move was made and passed at the July 13th BOE meeting. At the June 15th BOE meeting, Mr. LaBella agreed to a compromise, allowing the 5th graders to graduate and move to the middle school for 6th grade in September. In addition, that night the BOE proposed a public advisory vote set for January 2018. This vote would allow the public to have their voices heard regarding the future configuration of our middle school. During the meeting, Mr. La Bella stated he believed in this compromise to help heal the community and he promised he would not reverse his decision. However, on July 13th Mr. Labella broke his

promise to the community when Mr. Taylor presented a new resolution to reverse the 6th grade move. Mr. Butler, who was sworn in that evening, along with Mr. Taylor and Mr. LaBella voted to keep elementary schools K-6. By a 3-2 vote, the 6th grade students and teachers will now have to return to their respective elementary schools come September. Massapequa residents, outraged by this decision, flooded Marjorie Post Park Tuesday night to have their voices heard. Hundreds showed up and waited on line up to an hour to sign a petition to the NYS Commissioner of Education urging her to uphold the February 2016 resolution to move the 6th graders to Berner Middle School as planned. “These kids were promised a program, and to go to Berner Middle School and that promise was ripped away from them on July 13th. We need for them to be there in September,” said Rose Stein.

The fourth week of Music Under the Stars continues with The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra and Strawberry Fields, The Ultimate Beatles Tribute Band, which will be held at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, on Wednesday, July 26th. “The Nassau Pops offer an excellent orchestra performance, playing your beloved music from Broadway, television, and the movies,” added Supervisor Saladino.

“Strawberry Fields is a lookalike, sound-alike Beatles tribute band, dedicated to bringing you as close to a real Beatles concert as you can get.” On Saturday, July 29th, Chicago 9, The Ultimate Chicago Tribute Band” and Bloodlines, A Tribute to the Authentic Sound & Voice of Blood, Sweat & Tears” will perform at John J. Burns Town Park, located at 4990 Merrick road in Massapequa. “Chicago 9’s performance will bring to life the music of
