those currently in the U.S. Armed Forces. The beneficiaries of this year’s event include the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. Last year, about $115,000 was raised in support of organizations that benefit veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, bringing the total raised for the first two years of the event to about $200,000. The event is broken down into 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. Registered players and teams will be given jerseys and placed on either the Stars team or the Stripes team and matched against a team of similar ability. The score is cumulative resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. During the first two years, the outcome of the games

was not decided until the very end. Last year, the Stars defended their title with a victory of 282-274. In the first event, the Stars defeated the Stripes 214-210. Participants will include boys and girls, men and women, seniors, youth, high school and college players with each group taking the field for one hour. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. Among the highlighted matchups is a contest of teams of U.S. veterans beginning at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., players from the Plainedge community will take the field in a session that honors fallen NYPD Detective Brian Moore. A matchup between the NYPD and the FDNY is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. In total, 96 teams will take the field during the lacrosse marathon.

Harry Jacobs, Chairman of the Shootout for Soldiers Committee, said this event has been a big success since it came to Long Island two years ago. He expressed his appreciation to all those who helped make it possible. “I would like to give special thanks to all those involved in the planning of this event, especially the Town of Oyster Bay,” Jacobs said. “This event is a great way to bring awareness that our veterans need help. For the third consecutive year, the Town of Oyster Bay will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event will begin on the morning of July 21st, at 9 a.m. and continue nonstop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9 a.m. The event is held annually for the benefit of American Military personnel. In addition, the Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony at 5 p.m. to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conflict. Post Presentation V.F.W. Post 7763 Commander William Colfer welcomed Arthur Lih III of LifeVac to make a presentation of his life saving device to the members of Post 7763. Arthur Lih III is the inventor of the LifeVac rescue tool, used when a person is choking on an obstruction in their throat. The standard is the

Heimlich Maneuver to dislodge the obstruction. If a person is confined to a wheelchair or otherwise immobilized, the Heimlich Maneuver is not effective. LifeVac comes to the rescue. LifeVac works like a suction pump. If there is an obstruction in the throat, the pump is placed over the person’s mouth

and the LifeVac creates the suction to dislodge the it obstruction. The LifeVac system is now in use at many Police and Fire Departments, Rescue Squads, School Districts and several Senior Care facilities. Mr. Lih has provided each member of VFW Post 7763 with a LifeVac system.

She served in both

Iraq and Kuwait and was the recipient of Adopt-aBattalion packages during her tours of duty. Adopt-a-Battalion was established in order to collect and send care packages to members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed overseas defending the freedoms our country enjoys. The care packages show support and gratitude for their sacrifice and boost morale by providing toiletries and other necessary items to military personnel.

My Secret Life I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.
