Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make
their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. landlords of residential rental properties.” Councilman Hand went on to note that the amnesty program addresses both public safety concerns and homeowner convenience. “The Town requires building permits on home improvements because the work needs to done in accordance to standards and codes,” Councilman Hand said. “These standards ensure that construction on your home meets workmanship and safety requirements. The building permit process is not the time to cut corners. Quality workmanship that meets legal building codes is a wise investment, creates peace of mind and ultimately saves time and money down the road. This will be especially important when a resident needs to sell or refinance their home and they do not have the proper approvals.” To begin the process for a building permit,
residents can call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Planning and Development’s Building Division at 516.624.6200, where you will be directed through the process. The Town of Oyster Bay has extended its innovative and wildly successful building permit amnesty initiative designed to allow residents to obtain the necessary permits required on building improvements previously done to their homes, without incurring stringent penalties, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand announced. The program has been extended through December 31st, 2017. “The runaway success of this program has been the catalyst behind offering this extension to our residents through the end of the year,” Councilman Hand said. “During the next several months, residents with these existing improvements will be able to simply follow the normal application and inspection procedure. The standard fees will cover the entire process. All residential homeowners are eligible, including

Highest Honor Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently presented more than 70 Gold Awards - including ones to Rachel Carlin, Theresa Ciullo, Elissa Goldberg and Danielle Hopkins - of the Hardscrabble Association (Farmingdale, North Massapequa, South Farmingdale) during a ceremony hosted at Adelphi University. The Gold Award recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. Each girl spent more than 80 hours over the past year planning, executing and presenting the results of her project, which aimed to make the world a better place for others as well as herself. “We are extremely proud to celebrate so many local young women earning the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award,” said Donna
Ceravolo, Executive Director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, making these girls part of an exclusive group of women with the tools to become leaders in the 21st century.” The recipients each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them. Rachel wanted to share her passion for books and inspire students to embrace their creativity through her project, Adventures in Reading: The HMS Book Club. As a way to offer students the opportunity to grow as readers and writers, Rachel established the first book club at Howitt Middle School. In running the club for two years, Rachel was able to help the students improve their reading and writing skills. Rachel’s club was so successful that several
teachers in the middle school plan to run the book club for many more years to come. To help the members of a residential care community better interact with others, Theresa created her project, Association for Habilitation and Residential Care. Inspired by the members of the community, Theresa wanted to give children and adults the opportunity to develop better communication and social skills. In teaming up with the AHRC Organization and her high school’s Smile Club, Theresa hosted bi-monthly events where the members played games and activities that encouraged interaction and communication with others. The AHRC and Smile Club will continue to host the bi-monthly meetings as a way to ensure the community awareness and involvement continues.
Elissa’s project, The Pit Bull Project: Helping to Overcome a Reputation, addressed the misinformation regarding the pit bull breed that has led to its poor reputation. After falling in love with the breed herself, Elissa wanted to use her voice to educate her community about the dogs. Her end goal was to correct some of the misinformation people have been given about pit bulls. Teaming up with the Last Hope Animal Rescue and the NY Bully Crew, Elissa created a book and informational pamphlets with pictures of the dogs and tips on taking care of pit bulls. Her books have been donated to many shelters, her school and local library. Danielle’s project, Epilepsy Awareness, focused on educating her peers and community about epilepsy. She used her personal experiences with epilepsy to create
presentations, pamphlets and posters, which were all used as educational tools to help inform her community and spread awareness. Danielle presented her project at Girl Scout and PTA meetings. Audience members were even given tips and information on how to help someone who is epileptic and suffering from a seizure. As a result of her project, the NY State PTA added National Epilepsy Awareness Month to their calendar. Her materials have been posted on the school’s site for continued awareness. Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their communities and the world for more than 100 years. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award
recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to their Girl Scout Council before embarking on her project. The Girl Scout presents her final conclusions as the last step of the journey. Lifelong value comes with having earned a Gold Award. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, Gold Award recipients display more positive life outcomes pertaining to sense of self, life, satisfaction, leadership, life success, community service and civic engagement. Recipients of the award who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank for their achievements and can receive scholarships or other recognition from most colleges or universities.
