Shootout For Soldiers The Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with U.S. Lacrosse and the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation, Inc., will host the “Shootout for Soldiers” 24 Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit slated to be held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, on Thursday, July 24th and Friday, July 25th. There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

Councilman Pinto added that residents are invited to Classic Car Cruise Nights, free of charge. Those who have a vintage car that they wish to display must have a valid registration and license plates for the vehicle, and must register upon arrival. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. Vintage car owners are required to donate two cans of food in order to display their autos. All vintage cars may only be driven by their owners, who are required to stay for the entire event. Councilman Pinto noted that Classic Car Cruise Nights are limited to automobiles. For those who are looking to take a trip down memory lane, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Pinto encourages residents to come out for the return of “Classic Car Cruise Nights,” held on four Friday evenings throughout the months of July and August, at the LIRR Train Station parking lot on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Continuing on July 25th, August 8th and August 23rd, the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation Division will present the classic car events, which will display vintage automobiles in fun and festive atmosphere. “Who could forget that amazing feeling of taking your first car out f or a spin?” Councilman Pinto asked. “These events are a great chance to see how the owners of vintage autos have maintained their prized possessions so well, and kept these vehicles in such pristine condition over the years. The Cruise Nights are also a chance for our younger residents to see a part of American culture up close.”

Local Joins Teach For America Teach For America announced recently that a Massapequa, local has been accepted into the organization’s 2014 teaching corps. Teach For America is a national nonprofit working to expand educational opportunity for lowincome students. Corps members commit to teach for two years in high-need

urban or rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in pursuit of educational equity. Alexandra Gerraputa, a 2010 graduate of Massapequa High School, will teach in New York. “A friend of mine at school mentioned the corps to me during student teaching. I went online to check it out

and thought that their mission was inspirational. I am so excited that I am going to be a part of this movement because I believe that all children can learn and succeed,” said Gerraputa. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, by the time they reach fourth grade, students

eligible for free and reduced lunch are almost two years behind in reading and a year and a half behind in math, when compared to their higher income peers. Working in partnership with parents and principals, and alongside educators of all backgrounds, Gerraputa joins a diverse group of individuals dedicated to

addressing these gaps. “Our corps members and alumni have made a meaningful impact with their students and communities over time,” said Elisa Villanueva Beard, co-CEO of Teach For America. “I can’t wait to see the leadership, passion, dedication, and innovation this year’s corps will bring to their

classrooms nationwide.” A growing body of research demonstrates the effectiveness of Teach For America corps members. Recent studies by Mathematica Policy Research, the University of North Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee found that corps members have a positive impact on student achievement.

Completing Their Studies More than 650 Nassau County teenagers were awarded Certificates of Completion from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech during a ceremony at the Tilles Center in Greenvale. New York State Senator and Barry Tech alumnus Joseph Saladino spoke to the graduating class and applauded their accomplishments. “We love what you do, and

you’re making an impact on the world and showing the world what it means to graduate from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech,” Saladino said, “Make it known that when you graduate from BOCES, it means something, and let [the world] know that you’re from the best educational program in the state of New York. You are the best of the best.”

This year, more than 40 students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech earned scholarships for academic achievement, competence in their chosen career field and service to their community, receiving over $6,000 in total scholarship funds. The $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award was bestowed to 35 students who have

performed well in their chosen fields of study, participated in school activities and community service, and have served as positive role models. Shayna Haines, student speaker and Cosmetology student from Baldwin UFSD, declared her appreciation for Nassau BOCES Barry Tech and all that it has to offer. “I feel that the BOCES experience

is the best for any student who needs to understand who they are and what direction they want to go in. At their June meeting, The Long Island Horticultural Society awarded scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each, to two outstanding LI students who are majoring in horticulture at Farmingdale State University. They are Lucy Contreras, 25, of Massapequa Park, and James Brandt, 32, of New Hyde Park. Ironically, both students have come to the field of horticulture after pursuing degrees in other areas. After attending C.W. Post, Lucy was working towards a Master’s Degree in art at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, when she realized how much she

missed Old Westbury Gardens where she had begun working in 2007. Starting as a member of Visitor Services, she soon became the Plant Shop Manager, and then moved on to the greenhouse where she learned how to propagate plants. This experience made her realize that she “belonged in horticulture” and in 2013 she was accepted into Farmingdale’s horticultural program where she is now a sophomore. Her stated goal is to continue to work in a public garden setting. With an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Nassau Community College and a Bachelor’s

Degree in Sociology from Stony Brook University, James decided to return to school to pursue his true passion which began as a teenager working in his family’s backyard. He is now a Senior in Farmingdale’s fouryear degree program in Horticultural Technology Management. To augment his studies, last year James participated in a study abroad program
