Imagine & Publish Fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District wrapped up a year of literacy development by creating their own picture books. Instead of technology, students used paper and pencil. They received blank hardcover books, and the young authors had the option of writing fiction or non-fiction stories.
Jack Chiaramonte decided to write about sports and selected a sports term for each letter of the alphabet. Each page also included a related drawing. Jessica Misita came up with a tale about a monkey who doesn’t like bananas. The project started with students reviewing books by different authors, including “A Picture Book of Harry Houdini” and “Hey
Little Ant.” After coming up with topics, the children filled out storyboards with text and illustrations, before creating their final products. The students worked on their stories throughout May and June, and after finishing, they shared their books with kindergarten classes.

Sharing Expertise Kindergartners at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently completed their “How To” books. Students in Kathy Landman’s and Kathleen McLaughlin’s classes picked
topics they know about and created four-page reports. Some of the topics included how to play lacrosse, how to put on lipstick and how to be a paleontologist. The students learned to
use sequencing words — first, next, then and last — to write their stories. They also included cover pages with illustrations as well as dedication and about the author pages.

For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.
I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.
I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port

Pictures into Prose Fifth-graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own story based up David Wiesner’s wordless picture book, “Flotsam.” The project gave students a creative way to improve their writing skills. Students in Danielle Fraccalvieri’s class worked in pairs, and each group
was assigned a few pages from the book. They had to come up with a storyline for every page, and used Google Slides on their Chromebooks to pair the pictures with their writing. Ms. Fraccalvieri said students were encouraged to use sensory details such as what a character sees, hears and feels. Additionally, she said,
proper spelling, grammar and punctuation were required. Without knowing what the other groups were writing about, students brought their different pieces together for a digital class book. They used Book Creator to make their finished product, which featured each pair’s written and narrated stories.

Serving Up Knowledge To get a taste of ways they will use math in everyday life, fourth-grade students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District took part in Menu Math Day on June 7th. Teacher Susan Crimarco and her students welcomed parents to the classroom-
turned-café for lunch. Each group was assigned a theme based on a type of cuisine and had to open up a restaurant giving it a name and a concept, creating menus and publicity items, and learning how to become waitresses and waiters. It was the culminating

activity for the decimal unit. Students practiced adding up dollar amounts from real menus, and calculated tax and tip amounts. Parents provided the food and also tipped the young servers, with money donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Angelina and the rest of the student body stood around the flagpole as Principal Stephen Scarallo spoke about the history of the American flag, and the symbolism of the stars and stripes. “It represents freedom,” he said. “It represents courage and it represents all of the hope we have in our country.” Students wore red, white and blue, with many in flag-patterned T-shirts and dresses. Fondness for the Flag Students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the evolution of the American flag during the annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14th. A presentation by the Massapequa Elks Club included the pine tree flag which was used by the Continental Army in 1775
and the modern flag that has featured 13 stripes and 50 stars since 1960, as well as several versions in between. The orchestra, band and chorus performed a variety of patriotic tunes including “The StarSpangled Banner,” “Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle” and more. Students in the audience were given miniature American flags
to wave as the music played. “The flag is a symbol for everything America stands for,” Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin said about the importance of hosting the annual Flag Day ceremony. “It is an important message of citizenship and patriotism.”

More than a dozen elementary students from the Massapequa School District were recognized in an art contest hosted by the LongHouse Reserve Education Committee. In early May, fourthgrade magnet program students visited the LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton, a 16-acre reserve featuring gardens, outdoor sculptures and other forms of art. Students were asked to create artwork inspired
by the trip, and could either work individually or in groups. The 2018 LongHouse Reserve Student Annual contest featured winners from McKenna and Unqua elementary schools. Students, who created twoand three-dimensional pieces, were honored at a ceremony and reception on June 12th. They received certificates and ribbons for their achievements. McKenna winners, under
the direction of teacher Elizabeth Natke, included Olivia Della Camera, Emmalee Edzards, Mickey Farwell, Nicholas Gangi, Chris Fiorentino, Luke Marinuzzi and Joseph Moehringer. From Unqua, Justin Amante, Ella Baruso, Christopher Coghill, Kira Cutler, Lillian Dooher, Brennan Kilkenny, Casey Lee, Aidan Liardi and Ioanna Livardis were recognized. Their magnet teacher is Loree Moran.

Magnet students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District joined the likes of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and other famous inventors as they participated in the Invention Convention. Fifth-graders had to come up with an idea
for an invention, then present it for their classmates, parents and teacher, Jennifer Tand. The students were tasked with creating a product to solve an everyday problem. Among the ideas were the Pringles Pusher to get the chips from the bottom of the can, a robot butler
and a special eraser for dry erase board. As part of the project, students had to conduct surveys of potential customers, build prototypes of their inventions and create and videotape commercials to market their products.
Devoting the Day Students and staff at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District celebrated Poem in My Pocket Day on June 12th. It was the 10th year of the literacy initiative, coordinated by library media specialist Melinda
Alford. Students, teachers, administrators and staff members were encouraged to keep a poem in their pocket, either a published piece or one they wrote themselves. Children were given the opportunity to share their selected poems in class or when visiting

the library. Ms. Alford said in the weeks leading up to Poem in My Pocket Day, she taught students about different types of poetry including shape, blackout and Haiku.
