Nicole M. Zito of Massapequa Park, NY received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in a commencement ceremony held at Columbia University on May 22nd, 2014. Zito’s outstanding academic performance while at Columbia Law School earned her recognition as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Zito is also a two time recipient of the C. Bainbridge Smith Scholarship from the NYC Bar Association. During her time at Columbia Law School, Zito became passionate about workplace redistributive justice. In advocacy of
public service, she provided pro bono assistance to MYF Legal Service’s Workplace Justice Project where she helped prepare documents for a wage theft litigation. Likewise, she participated in the New York Lawyers for Public Interest (NYLPI) Summer Associate Exchange, wherein she dedicated her services to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ). At NCLEJ she assisted in drafting a complaint alleging government non-compliance with the procedural requirements of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP Benefits). While at Columbia, Zito also externed for the Honorable James C. Francis IV (United States District Court, Sothern District of New York), she was a staff member of the Environmental Law Journal, she was a member of the Columbia Women’s Law Association, and she was the Court Liaison for Columbia’s Chapter of the ACLU. Zito plans to join the

Three Massapequa residents have recently been named to the Dean’s List at Boston University for the Spring semester. Students recognized for this honor include: Catherine T. Curran, Mariel R. Hathaway, Caitlin A. Lawlor. Each school and college at Boston University has their own criterion for the Dean’s List, but students generally must attain a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as a full course load as a full time student.

Life Lessons Massapequa High School recent graduate Grant Neville, a former member of the district’s Life Skills program called “Community Career Connections” gained a new life lesson during his senior year when he worked with his special education teachers Grace Hussey and Tomia Smith to run a donation drive for soldiers stationed abroad. While job training at the McKenna Senior Center, Grant and his teachers noticed a collection box set up for Adopt-a-Battalion Inc., a program established to collect and send care packages of toiletries and
other necessary items to members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed overseas. Grant worked with his teachers to bring this initiative to Massapequa High School and collected items for a month. He brought the items to the senior center for transport to the Knights of Columbus in Massapequa Park where they were then sent to soldiers through the Adopta-Battalion program Grant’s efforts led to a collection of more than 3,000 items donated by Massapequa High School faculty, students and staff, and generated an interesting
competition between teachers Gail Hayes and Teresa Colgan’s classes when Grant went in personally to appeal to them. The two classes alone raised more than 1,100 items. “The most important lesson Grant may have gotten out of the experience was bridging the three communities together... school, senior center and soldiers,” Hussey said. “This was a great, meaningful project for him to engage in and a nice way to complete his senior year.” Grant graduated high school with his class on Sunday, June 22nd.

As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on
Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

Indian Hills Golf & Country Club did a fantastic job at the event, providing golfers with an array of activities that were enjoyed rain or shine. Along with the 18-hole game of golf, attendees enjoyed putting tee and driving range activities, along with a complimentary breakfast, lunch and an awards dinner. Awards included a four-night stay in the Dominican Republic, a Kindle, golf equipment, sports memorabilia, electronics, gifts cards, and more. Angela’s House is a nonprofit organization that assist families caring for children with special health needs. The charity proudly has 3 homes that offer 24-hour nursing care to medically frail children. Their new home cares for children that are dependent on ventilators to assist them with breathing. This year marked the organizations 12-year anniversary.

It’s Another Hole In One for Angela’s House. Despite harsh weather conditions, tickets sold out at the Indian Hills Golf Course for the Angela’s House Golf Outing. Moral was high, and the united support from friends and family could not be deterred by the morning delay due to torrential down pours. The Golfers came out to support Angela’s House for the annual golf outing in Northport on June 9th. The 12th Annual Golf Outing was a major success for the charity and helped raise a great deal of money for medically frail children and their families across Long Island. The LeMaire family was a main sponsor for this event. Brandon LeMaire, their son was one of the children who Angela’s House served. The Family holds a close connection with Bob Policastro, and the organization, and sponsored the event in Brandon’s memory. The event had the support of a number of corporations including TD Bank, SJS Construction, United Asset Strategies, Horan

The Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island, has successfully received recertification as a “Treatment Center of Excellence” by the national association. The ALS Association cited the Center as having the “highest national standards of care in the management of Lou Gehrig’s disease.” To commemorate this milestone, the association awarded the Center with a $12,500 grant and a plaque marking its designation. Named in 2010 in honor of Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, the ALS Center of Excellence is one of only 34 ALS Association-certified centers in the United States and three in New York State. The Center first received certification in 2009. The Center provides comprehensive treatment for ALS patients, supportive services for patients and their families, and carries out neuroscience research in search of new treatments, and ultimately a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease. “Stony Brook Medicine is committed to investigating the causes of this devastating disease and finding neurobiology targets that may greatly improve treatments,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences
and Dean of the School of Medicine. “The Center has provided incredible care for those who suffer with ALS, and with new treatment trials we hope to advance this care to an even higher level.” “We are so proud of the longstanding commitment that Stony Brook’s ALS Center and our chapter has had together to provide excellent care and supportive services to people with ALS in the community and beyond,” said Dorine Gordon, President & CEO of the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter. Gordon presented the commemorative plaque to the Center’s leadership and Christopher Pendergast. “The dream to find a cure continues,” said Pendergast, who conceived the concept of a comprehensive ALS clinic at Stony Brook 15 years ago that led to its establishment. “Stony Brook has created something special with this Center of Excellence, and its talented physicians and researchers continue to search clues that may bring us to the doorstep of that cure.” Pendergast said his Ride for Life Organization will continue to fund ALS research and clinical services at the Center. He estimated that through the proceeds from this year’s “Ride for Life” event in May, more than $150,000 will be awarded this year for the Center to help fund its ALS research programs and other initiatives.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has again received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats. In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which makes the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats more economical to the public by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then
commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Tame cats enter Last Hope’s adoption program. Last Hope’s “Fix-AFeral” program is geared to experienced cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for several cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago. “In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense. The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by mid-
November. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.” The generous grant from the ASPCA will continue to aid in the distribution of “Fix-A-Feral” vouchers so they last the entire year. At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last

Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer kittens will be born into feral colonies; thus, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and/ or ending up in shelters. The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

The New York State English Council (NYSEC) named Massapequa High School’s “Trilogy of Charity” program a 2014 Program of Excellence. The three-year program, involving many teachers, students, families and community members, was a marriage of community service benefitting Winthrop University Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids, led by students Ryan Schulte, Natalie Gramegna and Brandon Lawrence; and curricula from the English, art and music and technology departments. In the first year, “The Storybook Project” created a larger-than-life story book that housed an interactive compilation of students’
stories, poems and illustrations for Winthrop’s cancer patients to read and enjoy; the second project, called “Pitches, Pics and Poems” consisted of a student-created poetry and art exhibit, musical recital and raffles, which raised more than $500 for the cancer center. This year’s project, “Catch a Wave for Winthrop,” featured a beach theme that incorporated musical performances, a showcase of clubs along the “boardwalk,” and postcards with poems and illustrations that were printed and sold as admission to the event. The postcards were also hand-delivered to the cancer patients at Winthrop, along with a
$4,000 donation generated from the event. The program was chosen from numerous high-quality submissions, because it was “found to be clearly of exceptional merit and innovation. … The nature of the program touches the lives of many and contributes to a lifetime of learning,” Christine Zandstra, president elect of NYSEC wrote in her letter notifying the district about the award. Ryan, Natalie and Brandon, as well as, English teachers Bob Hempel and Christine Starr will accept the award and present a workshop highlighting their work at the 2014 NYSEC conference in Albany in October.
Anti-Bullying Lockhart Elementary School students learned new strategies to stand up to bullying from Oceanside’s Boardman Elementary School sixthgraders and their principal Dr. Karen Siris, co-author of the book “Stand Up!” with Lisa Roth, which teaches children ways to stand up for their peers. Siris created and implemented several anti-bullying programs at Boardman, which helped change the school’s dynamic and make the building a more welcoming, accepting and safe environment for learning. She continually presents workshops to teachers, administrators
and parents about bullying prevention and intervention, and her impacts are considered to have great potential to be long-lasting. As part of the program she created, sixth-grade ambassadors are carefully chosen each year to represent a Caring Majority. These students act as role models for their younger peers, and learn how to go from being bystanders – people who watch bullying happen without taking action – to upstanders – those who will speak out against it. In attempt to tackle bullying behaviors, these ambassadors unite to create educational and motivating presentations
for their assigned grade level. They even collaborate with each classroom’s students in making and committing to a class pledge, which outlines the way each student should act in order to feel respected while in school. “After seeing one of these presentations by the Boardman sixth-graders, Lockhart students and staff left feeling inspired,” said Lockhart social worker Samantha Romano. “The Lockhart community is enthusiastic about putting this program into action and making even more positive changes to their school in the year ahead.”
