Blue caps flew in the air as Massapequa High School seniors heard their final words as students in the district: “Class dismissed.” Following that declaration by Principal Patrick DiClemente, they officially became graduates. The 613 students were part of the 61st class to

graduate from the school during a ceremony at Hofstra University on June 19th. The milestone marked a new beginning in their lives, as the graduates will head to college, join the workforce or enlist in the armed services. “Our senior class represents an outstanding composition of students

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

OIL TO GAS CONVERSIONS

Architecture Showcase Structures rose from floor to ceiling in a classroom at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as fourth-graders in the magnet program hosted its Mathematics and Architectural Showcase on June 14th. The students spent the last five months studying architecture. In addition to learning about structures around the world, they also explored the engineering process to create their own playgrounds, domes, lighthouses, bridges and skyscrapers using recycled materials. Visiting family members marveled at the creations.

The young architects recreated lighthouses and skyscrapers from around the world, and created Google Slide presentations with historical information and fun facts about these noted buildings. They designed their own playgrounds and domes, and worked in groups to build the four types of bridges. “I really liked trying to figure out what materials worked best, and using my creativity,” said Leah Gerby. “I learned that when something doesn’t work, you shouldn’t give up on it.” Gavin Russell said the most challenging project

was the skyscraper, which had to touch the classroom ceiling. He said that to keep it standing upright, he and his fellow builders had to solve the problems by putting more thought into their design and not just using more duct tape. “I hope that the students learned more about the engineering design process and that the first time you try something, it may not always work so you try again,” said magnet teacher Michelle Locher. “It also showed them how they can use any items to create something innovative and new.”

Robert Schilling, assistant to the superintendent for assessment, student data and technology services, said that by expanding the Chromebook initiative to four additional grades, teachers and students will have more efficient and effective access to their resources. “So many of the tools that our teachers and students utilize for daily teaching and learning are online,” Mr. Schilling said. “Our Chromebook initiatives provides access to these tools anytime, anywhere, including throughout the school day, and creates countless opportunities for innovative practices.” Mr. Schilling added that the decision to broaden

the Chromebook initiative was based on feedback from teachers and building administrators. There are many resources that students regularly use on Chromebooks such as Google Docs for writing assignments, Google Slides for multimedia presentations and online databases for research. The Massapequa School District is expanding its one-to-one Chromebook initiative for the 20172018 school year to provide students in 10 grade levels with their own devices. Already, students in grades 7-12 are assigned Chromebooks, which they carry between school and home, and next year the sixth grade will be included in that program at Berner Middle School. In early June, fifth- and sixth-graders received their new state-of-theart devices, which have touchscreens and can be turned into tablets.
