he Cub Scouts of Pack 696 set up for their annual fundraising Car Wash at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church last week. Scouts, ranging from Kindergarten through fourth grade, helped to wash a line of cars so long that they had to “double up” on the number of cars being washed at one time. Family and friends came to show their support and lend a helping hand to this great cause.

BOCES five years ago, he brought more than two decades of experience in film production and music composition, including credits with National Geographic, Discovery Channel and PBS. Mangum is able to bring his experience to the classroom every day as he teaches high school students who dream of working in the music industry. Mangum and Sobol, along with the other finalists, will be evaluated by the Selection Committee in the coming weeks. One finalist will be named later this spring. Tripping Down Memory Lane By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before

my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, flying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2014 summer season on Saturday, June 21st, a week earlier than the previously announced June 28th date, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Pools are enjoyed by people of all ages,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The revised opening
date will let residents get an early jump on the season. Town Pools To Open Continued From 13 21st, registration will be held during the normal hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. A copy of the resident’s general tax bill, deed or survey (with section, block and lot number) is required, as well as a driver’s license or current utility bill. A birth certificate is required for children 16 years of age and younger. The hours of operation at the Community Park Pools will be 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily from June 21st through August 24th, Noon until 8 p.m. from August 25th until August 31st and 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m on Labor Day, Monday September 1st. At Tappen Pool, the hours of operation from June 21st through August 1st will be Noon until dusk Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. until dusk on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. until dusk on Sundays. From August
2nd through August 31st, the Tappen pool schedule will change to 9 a.m. until dusk Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. until dusk on Sundays. On Labor Day, which is also closing day, Tappen pool will be open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. “The 2014 Summer Program was recently mailed to Town of Oyster Bay households,” said Supervisor Venditto. “That guide contains information about joining a pool, membership fees and registering for swimming lessons. It also contains a wealth of information about the other fun activities to do in the Town of Oyster Bay.” Supervisor Venditto added that for further information about the Town’s pools, residents may also visit the Town’s website, w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com, or contact the Parks Department at 516.797.4128.

Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. The roofer smiled at the scout and said, “You are very welcome!” He was obviously pleased that the boy had recognized him and took time to show his gratitude. Funds from the carwash will be used to help the scouts participate in summer activities. The scouts raised over $800! We were blessed with perfect sunshine and packed with thousands of people enjoying all the entertainment, food, refreshments, and the 102 vendor booths. Our Grand Marshal, Past President Joe Basile was the creator of this event. Joe was with us in mind and spirit. He received many citations from our elected officials and was truly honored as our “Mr. Massapequa.” The streets were filled with vendors, food, magic performances, by John Lepre. Tin Can the Clown, created animal balloons for the children and did face painting. There were pony rides, a petting zoo, live bands, and performances by many school local talents. B103’s, The Wiseman broadcasted live throughout the day. Boy Scout Troop #90 presented the Colors and a young lady from Massapequa, Dina Elardo performed our National Anthem.
I would like to thank my entire Board. This was truly a joint effort of a very dedicated group of people who made this fair our best ever! Co-Chairs Joe Basile and Tony Ventiera designed the program and the rest of the Board worked countless hours to make this physically possible. First Vice President Susan Martin, 3rd Vice President Howard Ritzer, Secretary Jamie Bogenshutz, Past Presidents Robert Barrett and Phyllis Doria along with another veteran Chamber Board member, Sal Polito spent days and many hours performing huge tasks. Many of our newcomer Board members, Steve Orisses, J.P. Scarisbrick, Joanne Hawthorne, Lucrezia Mastroserio, Hercules Nickolopoulos, and Karen Gawrych were on hand in every aspect. Board Member, TD Bank VP Lauren Pulvidente, once again gave us a beautiful program consisting of children’s music, dance and karate performances and many local talent groups!

Town of Oyster Bay’s Public Safety Commissioner, Justin McCaffrey and Deputy Commissioner Barry Bree provided guidance and formal direction during the weeks prior and were on hand from 6:00 a.m. to closing on the day of the Fair. Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto was pleased to congratulate Grace Day School’s top students on their outstanding academic performances. Valedictorian Alexandria Rothschild-Edwards and salutatorian Hannah Daley both received citations for their academic achievements throughout the school year and their high scores on the Catholic High School Entrance Examination (CHSEE). Legislator Venditto presented the awards to the students and took time to teach them about the structure of state and local government. Alexandria Rothschild - Edwards is this year’s
valedictorian at Grace. Her outstanding score on the CHSEE earned her a scholarship to St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay, where she will matriculate in the fall. She scored 10th place on the National French Test out of approximately 24,000 students who sat for the exam. She is the first student homilist at Grace, and preached at our Memorial Day chapel service. She is active member of choir and orchestra and had a supporting role in this year’s school production of the Wizard of Oz as Glenda, the good witch of the north. Hannah Daley is this year’s salutatorian at

Grace. Her high score on the CHSEE earned her a scholarship to St. John the Baptist Catholic High School in West Islip, where she will matriculate in the fall. She earned 7th place on National French Test, out of 24,000 participants. She is an active member of our school outreach club: KidsCare, and a valuable member of our soccer and basketball teams. She played a supporting role in this year’s production of the Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow. Grace Day School extends its warmest congratulations to both Alexandria, Hannah and their families on a job very well done!

FIELD DAY - Students at McKenna Elementary School enjoyed Field Day events on Friday, June 6th. The weather was just perfect. Legislator Venditto was one of the speakers at the event, which was held to educate the community about the dangers of drug addiction. Triple The Donations Amid clusters of pink balloons and a sea of cheering students and faculty, a group of 47 teachers and students from Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus set a new record for the school. Each took a seat at the makeshift haircutting station, set up in the school’s hallway by Debra Ienna of Safie Salon and Day Spa of Massapequa, to have their hair carefully measured and cut for the
Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. The program transforms hair into free, high-quality wigs for patients undergoing cancer treatments. Each person who donated received a complimentary haircut and style at the salon. More than 50 ponytails of hair was donated to the cause, after a few other ponytails from those who had recent haircuts contributed to the event, tripling the amount of
ponytails collected last year. “We had a tremendous turnout and great support from our school and faculty,” said health teacher Denise Baldinger, coordinator of the event. “We are so pleased to be able to help cancer patients feel better about their appearance as they undergo treatment by giving them the opportunity to wear a wig made with real hair.”
