Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced that the deadline has been extended to June 14th for those wishing to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Battle of the Bands” competition. The program, which is orchestrated through the Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural & Performing Arts Division of the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, is a unique opportunity showcase some of the Town’s young musical talent. Councilman Imbroto said the deadline was extended to make sure that every band wishing to participate will have ample time to apply. “We want as many band as possible to a part of this special program,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Selected bands will be given an incredible opportunity to

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. students were not judged on whether or not their predictions were correct, but rather on the quality of their experiments and adherence to the scientific method. Students had six weeks to conduct their experiments and create presentation boards. They shared their findings with their classmates and also to McKenna’s fourth-graders in a science fair setting. Olivia DeCaro’s experiment involved

testing different household objects, including paper, plastic cups and fruit, to see which would conduct electricity. She learned how circuits work, and was excited to share her results with others. “I learned that you have to follow your experiment step by step and you have to be very precise,” Olivia said. “If you skip something, it will affect your whole project.”

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 29th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

Plainedge high school students, along with their teachers, toured NUMC. The students were given a detailed look of the hospital and spent time in specialized areas and departments.

For example, they went to the emergency room, primary care, housekeeping, laundry, mail room, and the podiatry clinic. It is important to get the exposure in the field students may be interested

in before they decide to go into it. There are so many career choices in the medical field that being exposed to them helps students make informed decisions.

One School, One Book Initiative The One School, One Book initiative at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District touches all subject areas, including physical education which recently hosted a walkathon fundraiser. It was the culminating event of this year’s study of Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing.” Every student and staff member received a copy of the book, and numerous activities

and classroom discussions were held throughout the year, including a visit by the author in December. During physical education classes on May 31st and June 1st, students walked for about a halfhour and also were able to make a $586 donation to the Massapequa-based Yes Community Counseling Center. Teacher Ed Hoffman said that each year the school chooses an organization that fits into the theme of the

respective book. The main character in “The Seventh Most Important Thing” is a young man who needs guidance and counseling to make good decisions. Mr. Hoffman added that students at Berner learn the value of giving back to their community and have many opportunities to do so through fundraisers, charitable drives or their participation in servicebased clubs.

To help her World Language students improve their speaking skills, Spanish teacher Janice Kincaid recently brought in a special guest to meet her seventh-grade students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The final exam includes a speaking section, in which students have to carry on conversations in Spanish on three different topics. Daniel Annunziato, who

graduated from Berner in 2015 after two years of Spanish instruction with Ms. Kincaid, returned to help the students practice for their final. He worked with small groups on fluency. Daniel consistently had the highest average in his class and was also the recipient of Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Award. During a project in which students had to research charities that

Spring Art Show Young artists from Birch Lane and Fairfield elementary schools in the Massapequa School District had their work selected for an art show at the Massapequa Perk coffee house.

This annual spring show features the work of approximately 20 students from each school in first through sixth grade. The students completed their various drawings and paintings under the

direction of teachers Melinda Wolfe-Gibbons and Nicole Hassell at Birch Lane and Dorothy Veltre at Fairfield. The art show runs through June 15th.

classes on June 2nd to play nutrition games that were made by her students. Many of the activities, like Lunchtopia, Food Bingo and Nutrition Land, were modeled after popular board games and television game shows. The youngsters learned about how to make healthy diet choices as they rotated

from game to game. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the Lockhart students to learn something they might not necessarily know,” said ninth-grader Morgan Frederick, whose group helped the children play Wheel of Nutrition. “Little things can make a big difference in their health.”

Town Pool Upgrades

Town residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Ave, Bethpage. The Town’s indoor ice skating center offers residents looking to cool off and learn some new skills a great way to beat the heat this summer. Lessons are available throughout the year, and the next series gets underway this summer. Summer lessons take place from July 1st to August 20th. The Learn to Skate program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters

are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson. Membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program; USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters, particularly beginners. Students enrolled in the Rinx’s Skating School

are guided by qualified professionals governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. This group of professional instructors focuses on educating and learning the fundamentals of ice skating while placing a major emphasis on having fun.
