Student Study Of Poets

uring the Poetry unit of study at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District, fifth-grade students lived like poets by seeing through poets’ eyes. Students studied many poets, noting the use of literary elements such as personification, similes, metaphors and alliteration. They then used all the techniques and styles and applied them to their own craft. Pictured are a few of the participants.

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

While all of the students crashed their cars at some point during the simulation, police officers were on hand to discuss the impairment laws, consequences and statistics with the teens. “It’s important to make the right decisions,” one student, who received her license in January, said after completing the task.

“This really shows you how alcohol can affect your brain, even if you think you are okay.” The Nassau County Police Department was also on site to view the program in action, with the hopes of duplicating it for all Nassau schools and residents. Inside the school, SADD club members asked students to pledge to always drive safe and make smart decisions by signing a big “safe driving” banner.

Following Memorial Day weekend, Plainedge High School students received the unique opportunity of experiencing the effects of driving while abilityimpaired. In a DWI simulator created by the Westchester County Police Department, students participated in a video game-like driving test that delayed their reactions in order to illustrate how it would feel to drive under the influence. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.

West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District recently received hands-on training in hatching and raising Bobwhite Quails. As an extension of their science curriculum on animal adaptations and ecosystems, the students partnered with Caleb Smith State Park to hatch quail eggs. These birds, which were once found in abundance on Long

Just a few weeks after hatching, when the quails were ready to be released into the wild, a representative from the park came to pick them up and work them through a soft release program. In early summer, the students will be invited to the park to attend the 10th Annual Bobwhite Quail Release. Students at Grace Day School in Massapequa came together to raise money for the victims of the recent Oklahoma City tornado that caused

widespread devastation. Kids Care, a group of students that get involved with public service and humanitarian acts, held a bake sale that ran for 2

weeks in an effort to help storm victims recover. The bake sale was originally planned to run for one week, but profits were so successful, that Kids Care

Raising Funds decided to extend the sale for a second week. “We know what it is like to deal with storm devastation because we had Sandy here.” a seventh-

grader explained. Students lined up to buy the baked goods in a line that was so long that it went around the outside wall of the gymnasium.

100% of the proceeds were sent to Oklahoma City victims. Hats off to Grace Day Students, keep up the good work!
