And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Golf Classic Set Some 190 golfers teed off to benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation during the 19th annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, held on May 16th, at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury. The event, which has been sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank for the past 19 years, raised $265,000 for the hospital’s neurosciences and

honored Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FAANS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery and Director of Neurosurgical Services. Dr. Mullins is a board certified neurosurgeon and founder of Long Island Neurosurgical & Pain Specialists. Henry Schreiber, Vice Chair of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board and an inaugural member

of the golf committee, said, “I think it’s one of the best outings that we’ve had. It appeared that Dr. Mullins was a very substantial draw and we are very grateful to him. It was a great opportunity for those attending to enjoy an excellent course and we have had some very good comments from the golfers. Adding tennis was also very

rewarding and everyone seemed to have a great day. It was the best fundraiser that we have had.” Mr. Schreiber said, “We are grateful to all of our corporate sponsors and individuals who worked together to make the Golf Classic such a tremendous success,” including Astoria Federal Savings Bank, Dr.

Massapequa High School Salutatorian Juliet Remi took a random class as a sophomore in high school that wound up framing her future. As a quiet person who shied away from public speaking, she took a chance on an Introduction to Law class that not only transformed her confidence, but set the foundation for her three years in the high school law program and the Mock Trial team. This year, she is President of the Mock Trial team and is the only member who has a role as a prosecuting and a defending attorney. With a 99.851 grade point average, Juliet heads to Colgate in the fall to study political science and gain “a well-rounded liberal arts education that will challenge her to think critically,” she said. She plans to attend law school and become a trial attorney. “The best parts of my high school career have been in the court room,” Juliet said. “I’ve learned so much from the Mock Trial team and made incredible friendships. I’ve been to the

Harvard Mock Trial seminar twice and have also been a semi-finalist in the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament two years in a row.” The Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor credits her eighth-grade social studies teacher Josee Charvet, who studied law, for first introducing her to law in her class and her Mock Trial advisor and social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who she says is her mentor who treats his students with mutual respect and opens opportunities for all of his students. Juliet is a member of National Honor Society and has earned National Silver Awards for her proficiency in Spanish. She was one of a handful of students who were selected to ask a question at the recent “Evaluation of Presidential Leadership Symposium” at Hofstra University featuring Ed Rollins, former National Campaign Director to Ronald Reagan, and Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont, based on the quality of an essay she submitted that had to address the question, “How have the political party debates informed public understanding of the presidential candidates’ leadership qualities and policy positions?”

Aside from her passion with law, Juliet finds inspiration in her older sister, Reneé, who was salutatorian of her college graduating class, studied abroad in college, something Juliet hopes to do, and is now a special education teacher in Hawaii and is going to graduate school for a master’s degree in public administration. Juliet said she has learned how to branch out by her sister’s example. During high school, Juliet was also involved in the Chief’s Challenge Club, which works toward improving school culture and providing community service. She was treasurer of the club for one year. BASEBALL TOURNAMENT - Roger & Betty Aiello enjoyed a Baseball Memorial She also played intramural Day Tournament game in Massapequa with their grandchildren Reilly & Dylan. basketball, soccer and volleyball, volunteers at her church and is a member of National Honor Society. Her greatest strength, she said, is her strong work ethic and her weakness is that she tends not to ask for help when she needs it. If she could change anything about high school it would be to get involved earlier and urged upcoming students to “expand their horizons outside their comfort zones; take that random class that you normally wouldn’t consider taking, because you never know where these experiences will lead you.”

One Town One Book Kickoff

SOLEMN CEREMONY - Local officials recently joined Ray Moore and his entire family to honor his son, Detective Brian Moore, who was lost last year in the line of duty. The group assembled in Plainedge Park with members of the North Massapequa Fire Department and members of the NYPD, Nassau and Suffolk Police Departments as well as hundreds of neighbors, friends and relatives of Brian Moore. At the solemn ceremony, the Town of Oyster Bay unveiled a statue made in the likeness of Detective Moore. The NYPD’s newest member of the K9 unit, named “K-9 Moore,” was also introduced. The touching tribute pulled at the hearts of everyone present and all who knew this great hero.

MEMORIAL DAY CELEBRATION - A Memorial Day Celebration was recently held at Fairfield Elementary School in Massapequa. The Fairfield Elementary School’s Memorial Day Celebration honors veterans past and present who have defended our nation, as well as the veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
