The room was completely silent as the eyes of Fairfield Elementary School fifthgraders stood transfixed on Massapequa High School students who were moving their hands in ways that represent words. The students were from the district’s American Sign Language (ASL) program, and for nearly 17 years, these upperclassmen have visited Fairfield and other elementary schools in the district to introduce youngsters to the non-verbal form of communication. “It’s a wonderful, exciting and fun learning experience for the ASL students as well as the fifth-graders,” said ASL teacher Melanie Smith. ASL students create 20-minute lesson plans in advance on topics such as sports, calendar, occupations, places around the community, rooms in the house, feelings and weather. Students enhance their lesson plans by creating various props such posters, worksheets, flashcards and by using SMART Boards. Before beginning the lessons, the fifth graders are divided into small groups so they have the opportunity to learn four different topics. “It is very successful and there are lots of moving hands and everyone’s facial expressions, which are part of the language, are amazing,” Smith said. “Believe it or not several of the ASL students went to Fairfield years ago and remembered when they were introduced to ASL.” Students at East Lake Elementary School shared a similar experience. Last year Massapequa High School seniors in Patricia McCarthy’s college-level ASL 4 class taught the language to secondgraders there. This year,

ASL seniors returned to teach the students as third graders. The seniors actively engaged the children by teaching them the signs for colors, animals and emotions through the use of the Smart Board and other activities. At the end of these lessons many students express interest in taking an ASL class when they reach high school and share what they have learned with their families at home, ASL teachers said. Outside the classroom ASL students have signed the National Anthem at professional sporting events, such as Islanders, Mets and Long Island Ducks games, and at community events, including the Village of Massapequa Park’s Holiday lighting ceremony. The ASL Club also provides opportunities for

students to hone their skills. Activities include visiting schools for the deaf and communicating with students and staff in ASL, Skyping with other ASL students around the country to practice signing, signing at events, hosting fundraisers and donating to local schools for the deaf and hosting fun activities, such as bingo and movie night, which are conducted solely in ASL. “Perhaps our most important accomplishment is the annual LoGuidice ASL Scholarship offered to two deaf high school seniors for $1000 each,” said McCarthy, who advises the club. “This year our recipients are a student from Lexington School for the Deaf in Queens and one from the New York School for the Deaf in White Plains. We wish them much success in their future endeavors.”

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto attended a ceremony honoring members of the Nassau County Police Department, who lost their lives in the line of duty. The annual event is held at a memorial in front of Nassau County Police Headquarters, where the names of those who gave their lives while protecting and serving Nassau County’s residents are listed. Tragically, two names were added this year as Police Officer Joseph Olivieri Jr. and Police Officer Arthur Lopez were both lost in October of 2012. You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

On Wednesday, May 22nd, Noah Bagdonas, a 14 year-old youth, was featured as a conductor at Grace Day School’s Annual Spring Concert. The event was attended by over 180 people and held in Grace Episcopal Church, Massapequa. Noah was selected by lottery, as a graduating 8th grader, and given a chance to conduct the school’s 37-piece band during the concert. Noah, being a baritone saxophone player for 5 years, felt comfortable taking on the leading role. When asked about preparing for the role of

conductor, Noah explained, “I didn’t really need much practice because I already knew the basics of how to conduct. Mrs. Greenberg, our music teacher, had taught us basic conducting skills years ago, as part of our (music) class.” He continued on further explain, “See, the music was written in 4/4 time which you conduct with a certain pattern that keeps time for the musicians.” Noah demonstrated the hand motions indicating 4/4 time in the air. “Then, all you have to do is indicate to the musicians

how you want the music to be played.” He was referring to the musical song dynamics of volume and tempo. “We try to introduce the children to many different aspects of music education while still keeping things fun,” said Teresa Greenberg, the music director. In September, Noah will be moving on to attend St. Anthony’s High School, Huntington. He embraced the well-rounded education he received at Grace Day and will be leaving on a good note.

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches. Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th. Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the Coney Island and Jones Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th. The reception is free and open to the public. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to art and history as it relates to Long Island. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for students 6-17 and $1 on Thursdays. St. Joseph Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes St. Joseph Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines. This marks the second year that St. Joseph Hospital has been recognized with a quality achievement award. Get With The Guidelines–Stroke helps St. Joseph Hospital’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and realtime benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives. “Recent studies show that patients treated in hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program receive a higher quality of care and may experience better outcomes,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. “St. Joseph Hospital team is to be commended for their commitment to improving the care of their patients.” Following Get With The Guidelines-Stroke treatment guidelines, patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies including the use of medications such as

tPA, antithrombotics and anticoagulation therapy, along with cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation counseling. These are all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. Hospitals must adhere to these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards. “St. Joseph Hospital is

dedicated to making our care for stroke patients among the best in the country. The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines– Stroke program helps us to accomplish this goal,” said Margaret Minnick MSN, RN, (VP Patient Care Services). “This recognition demonstrates that we are on the right track and we’re very proud of our team.” According to the

American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
