Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead Town Board are doing just that, announcing the start of the town’s 2014 Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program, which will be visiting communities across the Town of Hempstead to help residents inspect the installation of their car seats, free of charge. “With warmer weather on the horizon, parents will be driving their young children to and from many exciting activities,” stated Murray. “Now is the perfect time for Town of Hempstead residents to ensure that their children are properly secured in safety seats, and we are proud to offer the life-saving Child Car Seat Safety Program

The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members that has raised more than $250,000 since its inception, will expand to a second location in Long Island on July 24th and 25th. The event, which was originally started by a group of high school students, will hold its third annual fundraising game in the Baltimore area this June. The effort has expanded dramatically each year, with more than 2,000 participants and 10,500 attendees taking part in the 2013 charitable event. There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

The Long Island Shakespeare Festival (LISF) will present free public performances of an abridged version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I when the production returns for its 14th season at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden this summer. Performances are presented rain or shine. Shakespeare’s rousing history play features the invented character of Falstaff at the height of his rowdy and bawdy powers. The delinquent Prince Hal, the fiery Hotspur, and a host of nobles and ne’er-do-wells make for a stirring and exuberant evening of theatre where fact and fiction blend seamlessly under Shakespeare’s sure hand as he paints the portrait of a young prince’s reformation and ascent to manhood.

Valhalla is a 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

The company’s one-week curriculum called Extreme Interactive Hands Circus Skills School is designed for children of all ages. Taught by instructors who are graduates of clown college and other performing arts programs, Cirque du Jour uses ageand grade-appropriate lessons to teach kids how to juggle, stilt walk and spin plates, among other skills. EARTH DAY CLEAN UP - The Scouts of Pack 696, along with friends and family, recently pitched in to help beautify the surrounding areas of Brady Park and the Massapequa Preserve. This effort coincided with the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Earth Day Cleanup. After spending a few hours picking up trash and taking in nature on a rainy, April morning, the Pack left the preserve along newly cleaned trails for all to enjoy.

Homeless Fundraising

For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia excitedly announces that in the coming summer months, the program will return with a new focus, as ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. I am both proud and excited to have it return this summer and offer our younger residents the chance to more actively participate. This year we will be focusing the thrust of the program, affectionately referred to as ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.,’ to grade school and middle school children, in a summer long celebration of the works of Dr. Seuss, in honor of what would be his 110th birthday.”

Councilwoman Alesia went on to comment that in celebration of the works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as ‘Dr. Seuss,’ the program for this year’s Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be two-fold: a Town-wide poster contest based on one of the works of Dr. Seuss, as well as a ‘reading log’ chronicling a participants involvement in the program. “This year, to encourage the creativity of our youngest residents, Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be ongoing throughout the summer,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “First, kids will be asked to create a poster based on one of Dr. Seuss’ works of their choosing, which can be submitted to their local library for display until winners are selected. Secondly, kids will be encouraged to read (or have their parents read to them or with them) a minimum of five Dr. Seuss books over the summer, and fill out a ‘reading log’ chronicling the works they’ve read.” The Councilwoman noted that reading logs, which can be downloaded from the Town’s website or the One Town, One Book Facebook page, should be returned to the Councilwoman either via email at ralesia@ oysterbay-ny.gov or by mail to Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, Oyster Bay Town

In addition to these contests, each library within the Town has yet again enthusiastically joined up with the Town to sponsor ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.‘ events and programs at their branches, to tie in with this year’s selection. The Town-wide grand finale will take place on Thursday, August 21st at 7 p.m., at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road, in Plainview. Members of the Kids Care Club at Grace Day School held a bake sale to raise funds for those in need of housing or shelter through Habitat for Humanity. Students brought in many home-baked goods and even provided a nut-free section. Kids Care is a social outreach club lead by teacher, Mrs. Edith

Burman. Throughout the school year they work on projects to raise funds and provide support to less fortunate populations Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ministry that helps people in need of housing and housing renovations. Their main focus is to provide safe shelter and housing for those left homeless by

natural disasters, war, or civil unrest. Their youth program is geared to engage young people ages 5 to 25 and show them that help on any level yields to real change in peoples lives. Thank you Kids Care Club and all those students, parents, faculty and staff who worked hard and supported this event.
