A large classroom in Massapequa High School is filled with toys, blocks and puzzles, and an adjoining room has small tables and chairs. Both are covered in pictures of Disney and other popular children’s characters. These are not typical spaces in a high school but are necessary to make the district’s preschool program a success. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department runs the preschool every spring through its Child Study course. High school students interested in careers working with children, such as teaching, psychology or pediatrics, are able to get a hands-on experience in a program that follows all state childcare regulations. The school runs Tuesday through Friday

They are partnered with high school buddies, who play with them, teach them their letters, numbers, shapes and colors, and provide snacks and safe supervision. It was a musical day at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which hosted its annual An Evening with the Stars assembly on May 16th to showcase the talents of more than 40 young musicians. Family and friends were invited to an evening performance featuring the flute choir, the jazz band and the Spruce Street Singers, groups comprised of fifth- and sixth-graders. There was also a morning show for students.

The instrumental groups were led by band director Jessica Wyman and the choral group was under the direction of music teacher Brittany Bissonnette. To make the event feel like an awards ceremony, four students served as hosts. Fifth-graders Brendan Savage and Olivia DeCaro and sixth-graders Christopher Schimkus and Sara Ghaly introduced each group and entertained the audience with witty banter and silly jokes.

“We hope that the students come away with a sense of pride and accomplishment in what is essentially a studentrun production,” Ms. Wyman said. “All of the performing groups are after-school clubs and we try to get them to the point where a conductor is not needed. We also hope that the younger students in the audience will be inspired to start an instrument or join the chorus when they are old enough.”

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Fairy tales typically have happy endings, but the conflicts that make those stories interesting were the basis of a series of mock trials at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Sixth-graders in the magnet program designed four fictional trials based on popular fairy tales. They wrote scripts, created evidence, made costumes and played the parts of the judge, defendant, prosecuting and defense

attorneys, and witnesses. There were the cases of Cinderella and the golden slipper, Minion malpractice, the Three Bears vs. Goldilocks and Humpty Dumpty: was it really an accident? Parents who came served as the jury and turned out guilty verdicts in three of the cases. Led by teacher Lisa Gennardo, the students studied law and the judicial process for several weeks. writing. “Mock trials help them understand the law, practice critical thinking and gain greater confidence with public speaking by assuming various roles in a fictional criminal or civil trial,” Ms. Gennardo said. “Students get to experience firsthand the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in determining which facts are relevant and what legal arguments are effective.”

EDS Awareness Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus raised awareness for a rare disease, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, on May 4th. The school hosted Zebra Day, and students and staff were encouraged to wear black and white that day. EDS syndromes are a group of connective

tissue disorders that have various affects on the body including frequent dislocation of joints, stretchy skin, easy scarring and chronic pain. Student Natalie Dahlquist, who has EDS, organized the fundraiser at Ames. She sold zebra-striped ribbons as a way of raising money for the Ehlers-Danlos

Society. Donations will be used for genetic research, as it takes people with EDS on average 10 years to receive a diagnosis. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed. “It’s really important to spread awareness,” Natalie said. “These donations are really helpful.”

Everyone gathers together on the carpet at the beginning of the day to go over the calendar and the weather, and for closing circle at the end. In-between students separate by their age group for lessons or crafts, or for one-on-one time with their buddies. Craft activities are based on the calendar, such as rainbow hats for St. Patrick’s Day, teapot picture frames for Mother’s Day and handprint flags for Memorial Day. Preschoolers get an introduction to science with an Alka-Seltzer rocket experiment and learn about proper nutrition by making MyPlate pictures with food stickers. The high school students make year-end gifts for their buddies. Junior Jenna DeFina created a coloring book for one young girl by filling it with pictures based on the child’s interests along with a color-by-number guide and crayons. “We are with them for several months and you get close to your buddies,” Jenna said. “They rely on us. Registration is open for the Massapequa School District’s summer programs, which includes recreation, sports camps and fine arts courses. Summer Recreation will be held for five weeks beginning Monday, July 10th. The elementary program is for students entering kindergarten through sixth grade in September. It will be held from from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each elementary school. Activities include outdoor games, arts and crafts, sports, movies and weekly field trips. The program concludes with a talent show and art exhibit on Aug. 11th. The cost is $105 per week or $420 for the full program, with discounts for multiple children in a family. The teen center program

is for students entering seventh and eighth grade and will be held at the Ames Campus on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a game room, sports, arts and crafts center, and weekly field trips. The cost is $85 per week or $335 for the full program. Sports Camps begin the week of June 26th with baseball, boys soccer and speed, agility and conditioning. Other weeklong camps to follow in July include girls and boys basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, girls and boys lacrosse, softball, girls and boys volleyball and wrestling. The Summer Fine Arts program, which begins on July 10th, features a variety of classes in

instrumental music, theater and the visual arts taught by Massapequa School District teachers. A new class in Celtic fiddling compliments existing popular courses such as acoustic guitar, iPad Claymation, musical theater and many more. All camps run either one or two weeks, and conclude with an informal performance or exhibit. Programs are open only to students living within the district’s boundaries. Berner Middle School students, through their recent participation in a Breakout EDU game, experienced the obstacles faced by many slaves who sought freedom in the North via the Underground Railroad. Librarians Julie Rogers and Laurie MartucciWalsh, together with seventh-grade social studies teacher Danielle Kennedy, created the game using the breakout kits that have quickly become a popular learning tool in the Massapequa School District. Each team was assigned the identity of a fugitive slave, such

as Henry “Box” Brown, William and Ellen Craft, Harriet Jacobs and Robert Smalls, who are known for their daring attempts at freedom and subsequent success as free individuals. Students were challenged to work together to navigate a series of obstacles and clues to open five different types of locks. Opening each lock required understanding of the precepts, terms and vocabulary associated with the lesson. Stops along their journeys offered challenging clues which led them to meet either their conductor, a compassionate

sympathizer, or, if not careful, a slave catcher intent on reaping a handsome reward for their capture and return. When the group evaded capture, they were tasked with mapping their route on the Underground Railroad and completing their passage north. The removal of all locks was symbolic of the fugitive slaves breaking free from the bonds of slavery. Inside each box, students found a copy of the official U.S. order freeing the slaves, a short biography of the person they were running for and a prize awarded by their teacher.

BRAND NEW CUBS - On Sunday April 30th, the boys of the brand new Cub Scout Pack 66 were welcomed by their new charter organization, Grace Episcopal Church. The scouts, accompanied by their leaders and families, participated in the mass along with fellow parishioners. The boys recited the Scout Oath and the Scout Law during the proceedings and received a blessing.
