Nutritional Lesson After weeks of researching topics related to good health, nutrition and wellness, the freshmen students created original board games to teach kindergarteners and thirdgraders how to lead healthy lives. They promoted ways of
making good choices as the youngsters answered questions and advanced around the game boards. Each game contained nutrition facts and promoted topics such as the new food plate for healthy eating.

In honor of the completion of their unit on the American Revolution, fourth-grade students at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District were visited by New York State Assemblyman Tom

Come September, Alfred G. Berner Middle School will shift operations to a “house structure” to make class scheduling more flexible and to increase continuity between students, staff and the curriculum on each grade level. Picture it as a “school within a school,” according to district officials. Currently, students are placed on one of 6 ½ teams and are instructed by a set of teachers assigned to each team. In a house structure, the teams will be divided into thirds or about two teams per house. In each house will be two sets of teachers for each core subject, providing greater flexibility for scheduling to meet the specific needs of the students. Another advantage to a house structure is the guidance and support students will get. Rather than guidance

Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,
I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I
still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

John Broderick, a work experience coordinator at the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), was named 2013 Work Experience Coordinator of the Year by the New York State Work Experience Coordinators’ Association (WECA). Broderick received the honor for his contributions to WECA as liaison to the Department of Labor. For the past 10 years, Broderick has served WECA as a legal interpreter, deciphering and implementing new child labor laws. “John is always ready to lend a hand to fellow coordinators, engage in legal discussions with various state agencies, and provide resources for all to share,” WECA said of Broderick. “He is a true professional in the educational world of workbased learning programs.” “Mr. Broderick is respected by all staff at Barry Tech and continues to be an advocate for our students,” said Barry Tech Principal James Clark at a ceremony honoring the award winner. “He is a wonderful role model and makes a powerful difference in students’ lives. He should be commended for his close relationship with the Town of Hempstead, in creating summer co-op experiences for students. His projects with Habitat for Humanity (for our construction students) are some of the best events of the school year.”
