Physical Education teacher Michael Dellicurti says he “really loves his job.” And, it shows. Dellicurti, a resident of Massapequa, was chosen as the recipient of the 2014 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award from the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD). The award recognizes his “extraordinary contributions to his students, school district and community.” Dellicurti will accept the award on June 16th at the 2014 Professional

Recognition Awards Ceremony at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City. A physical education teacher for 12 years, Dellicurti was hired by the Massapequa School District in 2002 and has worked in the district’s Unqua Elementary School for the past eight years. During his time in the district, he said he is most proud of the steps taken to “make the physical education department one of the best around by being ahead of the curve in every aspect of the field.” “Each and every day when I come to work I am a happy person,” he said. “I love motivating the students and encouraging each and every one of them to learn how to be a better person while teaching them to live a healthy lifestyle. We focus on nutrition, fitness, being well-rounded individuals and always being kind to others no matter what.” In addition to these lessons, Dellicurti stresses to his students

the importance of giving back to others. Unqua’s “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraising campaign for the American Heart Association, led by Dellicurti and his physical education colleagues, has ranked among the highest in the nation, raising about $34,000 this year. “The way we have these students and their families come together and raise money for people who are in need of help is amazing,” he said. “I’ve seen students grow from their elementary years all the way through high school, and become wonderful young adults.” Dellicurti is a member of NYSAHPERD. He is a 1997 graduate of Massapequa High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in K-12 physical education from Long Island University and a master’s degree in sports management from Adelphi University. He resides in Massapequa with his wife, Marisa, and his three children: Ava, 5, Ariella, 2, and Michael Jr., 4 months.

Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

First Place Award “Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. Students, Board members and community residents gathered for the event, which marked more than 25 years since Edward Byrne’s fateful night on patrol in the 103 Precinct in New York. A 1984 graduate of the district, Byrne was killed on the job in 1988. Byrne’s name is still well known in the department

and still resonates in the Plainedge community. “I’m so proud to have Edward Byrne as an alum of the district,” Dr. Salina said. “He was a man of deep convictions who gave his life protecting others and fighting the war on drugs. This beautiful memorial arch serves as a constant reminder to the Plainedge community of Edward’s sacrifice in making the world a better place.” The original arch was erected in 1988 following his death.

Town Beaches Open Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto is pleased to announce that residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only, beginning on Saturday, May 24th. “If you’re a beach lover, you probably cannot wait for the official start of summer in June to enjoy the Town’s magnificent beaches,” said Councilman Pinto. “Therefore, I am very happy to announce that four Town beaches will be open on Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 24th. Additionally all Town beaches will be open daily beginning June 21st.” Councilman Pinto also

said that beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $25. Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have

Math-A-Thon Fundraiser East Lake Elementary School students took part in the yearly tradition of sharpening their math skills while raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon® program and raised $8,237.70 for kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Students asked for pledges from family
