The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. Celebrating 30 Years Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based notfor-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Children’s Services Program. “We’ve come a long way

from the days of supporting 15 infants at their homes and 42 pre-school children at the Bay Shore Children’s Center,” said Noreen Clemens, Director of ACLD’s Children’s Services and an original member of the Children’s Services team. “But we know now as we knew then that it’s critically important to make sure children with developmental disabilities get off to a good start in their educational lives.”

ACLD’s Children’s Services moved into the Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore in 1990; today, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore – which was added to the program’s offerings in 2014 – is the home of ACLD’s learning and recreation programs for children with autism, learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities. Offerings at the Center include a full-day and half-day

preschool classes which serve 65 children with developmental disabilities, a Head Start program which serves ten children, and an after-school program for 37 school-aged children. The Center is also home to a summer camp by the Great South Bay YMCA. ACLD enrolls children in the camp with the support of a grant from the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). In addition, the

Kramer Learning Center continues to operate, providing comprehensive diagnostic, educational and therapeutic services to 160 children with developmental disabilities, along with a Head Start program which serves 20 children. In all, more than 12,000 children have received support from ACLD Children’s Services since it launched in 1986. “Before there was an

Receiver Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2015-2016 School taxes by the May 10th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard 2% late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after May 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have

expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property.” In July, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners

with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit that office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Famous Author Visits Lockhart Elementary School students in grades 4-6 participated in an author visit with Doreen Rappaport. Rappaport is famous for her wonderfully written picture book biographies. Students were

introduced to books such as “Abe’s Honest Words,” “Helen’s Big World,” and “Jack’s Path of Courage” during their Library period in the weeks before the visit. Students said they enjoyed the visit greatly

and were fascinated by the amount of research that went into writing each book. They also reflected on the ways a real author visit enriches their own reading and writing.
