The Summer Swing Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Third-graders recently took a trip to the other side of the world without leaving the comfort of their classrooms at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Teachers Annette Ready and Laura La Torre led a unit on China, part of the social studies curriculum which focuses on cultures around the world. Children from the two classes paired up and used Chromebooks to do research on the country, compiling facts from various websites and databases. They then completed “All About A Country” posters, which included information on holidays and traditions, population, geographical features and government.

Color and Creativity The children used their knowledge of line and space to create their designs. “Wild Things” was the theme of a project that first- and second-graders completed using their imaginations and paint pens. The students read Maurice Sendak’s book “Where the Wild Things Are,” then created their own portraits of monsters. Inspired by Heather Galler’s folk art landscapes, fourth- and fifth-graders

created their own pictures using markers, crayons and watercolor paint following a crayon resist technique. “It’s exciting to see how the students challenge themselves and take these ideas and go farther with it,” said Ms. Merz, who had displayed the work on bulletin boards throughout the school. “Art is a class that they are always excited to come to.”

Team Effort Players on the Massapequa High School varsity baseball team say that sometimes it’s OK to join forces with a rival. For the fifth year, the Chiefs, led by coach Thomas Sheedy, have partnered with another Nassau County school to raise money for a good cause. Massapequa played Oceanside High School in a regular season night game at John Burns Park on April 27th. The annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society charity game served as a fundraiser for the organization, with

both teams supporting the cause. Fans could buy shirts which on the front read “Play Ball for a Cure” and on the back featured the two teams’ logos and “Two Historic Rivals. One Night. One Goal.” Chiefs players were also stationed in the gymnasium lobby during the week of April 24 to sell shirts and collect donations through the Ball for the Wall initiative. Students and staff members who contributed wrote their names on paper baseballs, which were hung across from the gym.

Fundraising for the effort continues on May 6 at Baseball Day when all district baseball teams, from seventh grade through varsity, play at John Burns Park. Once all donations are in, the Diamond Club booster organization sends a check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Senior baseball player Daniel Gdanski said, “As athletes in Massapequa, we have a responsibility to help the community and the people around us.”

Led by teacher Claire Merz, they have been building upon their existing art skills by using new materials and trying new techniques. Massapequa Vanguard Massapequa UFSD student Tara Haskell was honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). Tara, who is a personal trainer, exercise science student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the 2017 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and

career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers. The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which

provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs. NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce through the promotion of gender-neutral educational strategies and practices.

Growing Ideas Studio in Art students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently found out what it would be like to work as architects. The ninth-graders let their imaginations run wild as they designed and built treehouses. Each student in Beth Adler’s class began by selecting a geometric shape

for their design, creating a floor plan and completing an elevation drawing in pencil, which showed what the structure would look like on the outside. They built models from materials found at home and were encouraged to use natural products. For finishing touches, they added items like seashells,

beads, leaves, flowers and miniature umbrellas. “The students are so creative and inventive,” said Ms. Adler, noting the fun features they included like balconies and spiral staircases. “Their use of found objects is amazing and the attention to detail is very present.”

By knowing their numbers, students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were able to create a big number to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The school raised $6,857.50 to help children who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Many of the patients at the hospital are being treated

for the most aggressive childhood cancers. To show their support, East Lake students participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Students had sponsors make pledges as they completed books filled with gradeappropriate math questions. The top two earners in the school were a pair of kindergartners: Isabella Guzzo who raised

$605, and Ryanne Hilt whose donations totaled $495. “We thank all of the students who participated in the Math-A-Thon and all of the families and community members who donated so generously to this wonderful event,” said math teacher Jean Scavella, who coordinated the event at the school.

On the Run Inspired by the animated movie “Chicken Run,” fifth-grade students in the Magnet program at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District designed and raced cardboard chickens. The project, which teacher Joanne Markowski dubbed “a science experiment in disguise,” taught students about controls and variables. The controlled aspect was the width of each cardboard chicken, which had to remain the same. But on

the flat sides, children could make changes such as adding objects to increase weight. Ms. Markowski explained that the students could only test one variable at a time as they competed against each other in races to the finish line. Students raced their chickens along side-byside pieces of string. The feet of the chickens had to remain on the ground. The project also included a creative writing activity. Each student had to create a Tweeter.com profile

for his or her chicken including its name, age, occupation, favorite foods and interests. Additionally, there was a chicken “beauty contest” with students judging the creations of their peers in originality, authentic replication and humorous designs. Ms. Markowski explained that she comes up with many of her activities for the gifted and talented students with humor in mind, so they can use their wit and creativity to solve problems.
