weekend before they open full time for the summer. From Saturday, June 23rd, through Labor Day, all Town beaches will be open for the season seven days a week.” Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. Residents aged 60+ qualify for a Senior Beach ID at the Town Clerk’s Office for
a one-time fee of $32. Additionally, volunteer firefighters, U.S. Coast Guard members, Armed Forces service members, and veterans all qualify for seasonal beach passes at reduced rates. Creative Time & Space Students in the Career and Community Connections program at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are making good use of the Makerspace activities offered in the school library. The ninth-graders are working with different technological resources such as 3D pens, iPads and small robots. Teacher Kathleen Wegener, who
partners with library media specialists Evangeline King and Alex Norden, said the activities help students develop their fine motor, socialization and problemsolving skills. She said she enjoys seeing students master an activity, then help their classmates learn. “It empowers them and it lets them be creative,” Ms. Wegener said. “There’s no right or wrong.”
Students use the 3D pens to make different objects, or create designs on computers, which are then made on a 3D printer. With Ozobots, students draw lines and dots using different color markers to send commands to the small robots. The iPad add Osmo allow them to make words using tiles or patterns with colored shapes.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle
used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-
cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation
studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can
help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! To track their fitness progress this year, students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently completed the FitnessGram test during their physical education classes under the direction of teaches Laura Cinelli
and Stephen Donovan. FitnessGram is a non-competitive health-related fitness assessment that measures aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility through a series of exercises. Students
participate in FitnessGram tests in the fall and spring, and receive fitness reports upon completion. The purpose is to encourage daily physical activity to support healthy growth and cognitive development.

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required. Summer Reading Challenge Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today issued a Summer Reading Challenge to elementary school children throughout the Town, encouraging them to spend some quality time with a good book this summer. Supervisor Saladino
stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is challenging students to not only spend quality time with friends and family this summer, but also with some good books. Students who read during the summer perform better in their studies in the fall, and we challenge you to pick up some new books from your library today!”
An informational brochure about the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Reading Challenge is available, which contains: a list of reading suggestions for students from 1st through 6th grade; a summer calendar to help track your child’s reading progress; and a form to fill out and return to Town Hall
Two More Wins the state competition. “We put in so much work and everyone was so dedicated,” said co-captain Kayla Collins. “We went in feeling pretty confident.” Kayla and co-captain Samantha Cupolo, who served as the lead attorneys for their team, said that preparing for the mock trials required a lot of time and practice, including several days a week after school and even on weekends. The students worked with mentor attorneys who are graduates of Massapequa High School and former members of the mock trial team, and incorporated their advice and critiques into the competitions. Many members of the squad are students who are considering careers in law or politics, such as seniors Kayla and Samantha who
plan to study political science at Northeastern University and Binghamton University, respectively. The team coached by social studies teacher John Pardue won the 32nd annual Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Marv Hazan Moot Court Tournament in April. The team earned first place after successfully arguing every case they were assigned in front of a panel of judges. They were only given 15 minutes to prepare for each case. The team competed against high schools from across Long Island, the United States and the world. Senior co-captain Jessica Lorenzo said she and her teammates enjoyed the experience and were able to improve their public speaking and argumentative skills.

Importance of Charity In addition to learning another language, eighth-graders in Janice Kincaid’s Spanish classes at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District are also learning how to be good citizens of the world. During the week of May 7th-11th, students sold bracelets during lunch periods to raise money for a pair of charities. Proceeds from the sale of several hundred “pura vida” bracelets, which totaled more than $1,000, will benefit Convoy of Hope and Water for People. An expert on nonprofit organizations spoke to
Ms. Kincaid’s eighth-grade Spanish classes about charitable contributions and how to find the right charity to donate to. She showed students how to research different charities to learn how the money is being spent. Ms. Kincaid then charged her students with selecting charities in which at least 80 percent of donations is spent supporting the cause, and ones that benefit people either in Hispanic communities in the United States or in Spanish-speaking countries. After a student vote, they chose Convoy of Hope, a humanitarian
organization that provides food and water to the impoverished and helps with disaster relief efforts, and Water for People, which provides access to clean drinking water to people in nine countries. “Clean drinking water is important for people to have a good life and be healthy,” said Kristen Froller, who along with Caitlin Hannan and Aly Harding did the initial research on Water for People. Added P.J. Schrammell about the charitable efforts, “We’re all human beings and we should be helping each other out.”

Massapequa High School’s mock trial club recently won a pair of tournaments, with firstplace finishes for each of its teams. The team coached by social studies teacher Daniel Bachman captured its first Nassau County championship since 2012 as they went undefeated in the Nassau County Bar Association’s Mock Trial Tournament. Beginning in February, Mr. Bachman’s squad competed twice a month at the Supreme Court building in Mineola, and won all seven rounds including the culminating match against Syosset High School on April 30. The team alternated between arguing as the prosecution and the defense throughout the season. It now advances to
