On Long Island awards. Elaine Thompson’s golf art is often seen in public places on Long Island and all over the world. Thompson’s painting of the “Lady Golfer”, is a painting of a woman, at Timber Point Country Club, Great River, N.Y. That golfer is dressed in late 1800s attire, with the Great South Bay of Long Island in the background. Thompson is known for her extraordinary ability to paint very fine details that look like photographs. Also included in her collection are other paintings of Long Island scenes (in the VanGogh style), featuring the Montauk and Fire Island Lighthouses, The Big Duck, the Smithtown Bull and the Riverhead Riverside. Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster. Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK COURSE – Bethpage, Over the Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany and won a “Best on Long Island” award. Her collection also includes posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. The 2009 painting also won two Best

Long Island native, artist Elaine Faith Thompson was chosen to paint and design the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship commemorative poster. The U.S. Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th30th, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton. The archival, faderesistant lithograph poster is now available, on www. usgashop.com in the category of “Art & Gifts” and at the Sebonack Golf Shop. Thompson would be delighted to write a personal message on your poster after it is purchased. She will be signing posters in the USGA merchandise pavilion during the championship. The original painting is also available for purchase. Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the

What Would you Do... What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.
But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital. Gerrard also served for 32 years as a member of Mather’s Board of Directors. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 am followed by an 11 am shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dessert and a raffle drawing takes place at 7 p.m. The golf entry fee is $500 per person or $2,000 per foursome. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work. Classes at Barry Tech carry no ordinary criteria for completion. In addition to meeting state academic standards, Barry Tech students must meet industry certification requirements in their chosen careers. As a result, Barry Tech students earn certificates in their specific fields of study, as well as technical endorsements on their diplomas.
The students of the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech) dominated this year’s SkillsUSA New York Leadership Conference and Skills Championship, held in Syracuse. More than 30 Barry Tech teens took first, second or third place. Two Barry Tech students campaigned for and won official posts. Faiz Kapadwala from the Hewlett-Woodmere school district was elected Lead Delegate, while Kevin Moran from the BellmoreMerrick central high school district earned the rank of New York State Delegate. Twelve Barry Tech students were chosen to attend the 49th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference. Belmont Festival Set Garden City will once again celebrate the final leg of the Triple Crown during the 16th Annual Garden City Belmont Festival on Friday, June 7th from 6 to 10 p.m. Held on the eve of the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, the Garden City Belmont Festival will bring an evening of family-friendly activities,
live music, food and other entertainment to Seventh Street. This year’s festival is sponsored by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and Stifel Nicolaus Investment Services. “The Belmont Stakes is a time-honored tradition which all of us in Garden City look forward to with anticipation each year,”
said Garden City Belmont Festival Chairperson Mary Dolan Grippo. “This tremendous event would not be possible without the continued support of NYRA and our newest partner Stifel Nicolaus. We are very grateful for their commitment and thank them for their involvement in this year’s festival.” The evening will
include live music from a variety of bands, including the Fivestone Rock Band, Jerry and the Newcomers, New Vintage Orchestra, Nor’easter and The Village Music Makers. Dancers from Broadway Bound Dance Center will also perform for attendees. A festival favorite, the Wing-Off Competition will offer local restaurants the opportunity to compete to
be named Garden City’s chicken wing champion. Attendees can participate in the tasting and judging with a donation of $5. All proceeds benefit local Hurricane Sandy relief efforts by the American Red Cross. Local restaurants wishing to participate should contact Tim Peeples at 917.747.3067. The festival will also

Recently CBS’s 60 Minutes recently reported on the impact of the Robin Hood Foundation - the force behind the12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden, which raised $50 million to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Robin Hood has given a grant to the YMCA of Long Island to help Long Islanders who suffered devastation as a result of Sandy. The YMCA, an island-wide, cause-driven nonprofit, has earmarked the funds to help families affected by the storm attend afterschool care, participate in counseling, or attend summer camp. “The YMCA of Long Island is all about making an impact on the lives of Long Islanders,” says Anne N. Brigis, President and CEO, “So many children have developed fears as a result of the storm and families are financially burdened as the try to rebuild. Summer camp, counseling and afterschool services offer kids positive, nurturing and memorable experiences while giving parents peace of mind.” The Robin Hood Foundation’s mission is to “find, fund, and partner with programs that have proven they are… a consistent force for good in the lives of New Yorkers.” The YMCA of Long Island has met the foundation’s rigorous standards and will disperse funds from the Robin Hood Foundation to 30 families who have requested aid. “Long Islanders know all too well the physical and emotional destruction that Sandy left in its wake. We are honored that the Robin Hood Foundation recognizes the Y’s ability to make a difference,” says Brigis. “Every family we help is truly in need, and it’s our heart-felt privilege to assist them.” The YMCA of Long Island will be capturing the stories of some of the grantee families as part of documentary.

For the third consecutive year, Massapequa High School’s Mock Trial Juniors Team was a finalist in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Nassau County Local Tournament. The team members had to argue six cases in a row, which were presented to them at the competition, according to Mock Trial Team Advisor Daniel Bachman. They are given 10 minutes to prep their opening statements,
direct examination, cross examination and closing arguments. They then argue their cases, get constructive criticism and move onto the next round until a winner is crowned. “The students in our Mock Trial program continue each year to set a higher standard of oral argument, trial preparation and academic achievement,” Bachman said. “Speaking for myself and their other law
teachers, we couldn’t be more proud of them.” The team’s lawyers were Jenna Petrungaro and Rebecca Giradin who will be volunteering at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office this summer. The team’s witnesses were Christie Flanders and Jenny Raffaele, and the legal researcher was Cameron Wunderlin.

She got to see how an office memo is created, edited, copied, and distributed by performing each of those tasks under Mrs. Quinto’s close supervision. Summer explained that the most interesting part of her day was the “classroom observation” time. “It was nice to see that the children were interested in learning and showed good behavior. It’s really different when I am not (a student) in the class”, explained Summer. She enjoyed the teaching process from an administrative perspective on a wide range of subjects. Summer Sescila is a second grade student at Grace Day School in Massapequa. As part of a fundraising event, Summer won the opportunity to act as the Assistant Head of School for one day along side Patricia Quinto, who normally fills the position. This cheerful 7-yearold thoroughly enjoyed dressing in her best “office” clothing and performing administrative duties, while sitting in the “corner office” at the private school. Summer’s day began as she opened the morning school assembly for all grades K-8. She lead the school in starting the flag ceremony, the Pledge of Allegiance, making general announcements, reciting morning prayer and group singing followed by dismissing the grades to begin class.
