A chorus of cheers and bagpipers could be heard as patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus in their power wheelchairs at the annual Ride for Life event. Stony Brook University athletes escorted the Riders who rode to Stony Brook to take part in the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony on May 2nd, the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair Ride for Life trek across Long Island that ends in Manhattan on May 9th. Christopher Pendergast, President and Founder of Ride for Life, and a 22-year ALS patient and advocate, led the way with six other ALS patients as they rode to the ceremony area, where 6,000 pinwheels were displayed. The pinwheels symbolize the lives lost to ALS each year. At the

Continued From 4 Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony, the names of 90 patients lost to ALS were read aloud. The 90 names, requested by their family members to be read, also represent the fact that every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. A candle was lit for each individual in their memory. Supporters from Stony Brook Medicine gathered with the family and friends of patients to celebrate hope – as symbolized by the pinwheels that a cure for ALS is ‘blowin in the wind.’ “ALS is a remarkable challenge to physicians and neuroscientists, but this is an exciting time in the Neurosciences and through research we continue to seek better treatments and hopefully a cure,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “We are all here today to join together in hope and strive to make ALS a tragedy of

the past.” During the ceremony, a $60,000 donation was announced to the Ride for Life on behalf of the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter. The funds will be used to support clinical services and research at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Keynote speaker Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs in the School of Medicine, had attendees join hands as a sign of unity to fight against ALS and hope for a cure. A recitation prayer by the Reverend Rich Allen of Sayville United Methodist Church added to the spirit of hope at the event. The ceremony closed with a jolt into the sky – as a 16-rocket launch salute took place. The “spirit salutes,” as they were referred to, symbolized the 16 lives lost to ALS every day.

Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors

Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of

Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

WWII Weekend The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage becomes an embattled European countryside of 1945 during the weekend of May 17th and 18th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as World War II armor advances down country lanes and living historians maneuver across open fields before thousands of visitors during the 70th anniversary of the end of that epic conflict. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active duty military personnel with I.D. are admitted for free. Presentations will include tactical military exercises, displays of period weapons and an armor parade that includes a Sherman tank, armored cars and halftracks.

A memorial service will be held at Noon on both Saturday and Sunday to honor all American servicemen and women who have given their lives in the defense of freedom. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano stated, “The ability to create an armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II is one of the most compelling educational tools we have to recount the story of our G.I.s’ courage, valor and sacrifice. Place it in this setting of vintage farmhouses and country roads so reminiscent of the WWII era European countryside, and you have created a virtual time machine that creates indelible memories for visitors who begin to appreciate the heroes in their own families.” The WWII Encampment is unique in New York

and brings scores of living historians together to demonstrate tactics, coupled with an operational armor collection unseen in the northeast. World War II weekend is made possible through the cooperation of the Office of Nassau County Executive Edward P. CREW WINS BIG - Venturing Crew 130 came in 1st Place overall at the 2015 “Scout vs. Wild” Pequott Camporee. The Venturers did everything from a shelter building contest to eating alligator. There was a little Scout vs. Wild trivia and some geocaching too! The crew advisor even had to eat a cricket as part of the Bear Grylls inspired competition. On Saturday, May 23rd, the eighth annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk will be taking place on the streets of East Northport. On July 21st, 2007, Christopher Schererm who was a Corporal in the Marine Corpsm lost his life while serving our Country in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew up playing in the neighborhood thaat he fondly referred to as ‘The Grid.’ On the first day of Memorial Day weekend, participants of all ages can experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while running, jogging or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School. Greek Festival Day Lockhart Elementary School sixth graders celebrated Greek Festival Day on Friday, May 1st, as a culminating activity to their unit of study on Greece and Greek Mythology.

The day started with the arrival of Greek gods and goddesses who gathered to sing songs about Greek life and Greek culture. Throughout the day, the children recited speeches about their Greek god or

goddess they researched, shared the projects they created after reading “The Lightning Thief,” sampled Greek food prepared by wonderful parent volunteers and competed in a Mini-Olympics.

HISTORIC COLLECTION - The Historical Society of the Massapequas has donated 12 large photographs and drawings to the Massapequa Public Library depicting life in Massapequa and Massapequa Park throughout the years. These pictures have been hung bordering along the top of the book stacks in the Central Avenue adult reference area. The library would like to sincerely thank the Historical Society for this interesting educational display which has already been generating interest throughout the community.

BLUE & GOLD - The Blue and Gold Ceremony was recently held for the Cub Scouts of Pack 5 in Massapequa. Assemblyman Joseph Saladino handed out the Arrow of Light award to six scouts who worked hard to earn this honor. The Arrow of Light is the highest award that a Cub Scout can receive.

Massapequa Public Library Twenty-nine Massapequa High School students - almost double the amount from last year - earned medals for high performance on the National Spanish Examination, qualifying them to apply for scholarships or travel awards to Spanishspeaking countries. Seniors Vincent Coghill, Adriana Franco and Bridget Keegan were awarded bronze medals for achievement on the level 5 exam. On the level 4 exam, juniors Giogia Piantanida earned a gold medal, Sean Fiola, Tanner Knabe, Kaitlyn Lucey, and Juliet Remi received

silver medals and Olivia Abele, Raymond Cecora and Suzanna Storti earned bronze medals. School Top Fundraiser Unqua Elementary School students jump roped their way to raising $33,575 for the for the American Heart Association “Jump Rope for Heart” campaign. The final tally was the second highest ever raised on Long Island — behind the school’s own record last year of $34,666 — and will likely place them among the top schools across the state once again.

Thanks to the generosity of the Unqua School community, the school has raised the most money on Long Island seven years in a row, according to physical education teachers Mike Dellicurti, Melissa Osborne, Mike Viola and Kevin Shippos, who organize the event. In 2014 and 2011 the school placed second in the state. “The campaign is a great way to motivate students

to lead healthy lifestyles while teaching them the importance of helping others,” Dellicurti said. “The students have a great time jumping and moving, something they are taught to do on a daily basis to keep their hearts strong.” As in previous years, the school was awarded $1,000 and two plaques acknowledging its outstanding fundraising SCHOOL TOP FUNDRAISER - Unqua Elementary School students jump rope to efforts. raise funds for the American Heart Association.
