Bill Pavone Supervisor of Nassau County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Division I had his Spring meeting in the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management Lecture Hall at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center in Bethpage and Jayne Cafaro Deputy Supervisor was instrumental in getting special Guest Speaker NC Police Lt. Bill Leahy Coordinator & Administrative Supervisor of the Homeland Security - Emergency Preparedness Unit to speak on the topic of “Terrorism.” Lieutenant Leahy gave an excellent and powerful presentation on “Terrorism” that was very in depth and especially informative which had a positive impact on the Division I CERT membership. He spoke on the “History of Terrorism” and the“Eight Signs of Terrorism” that all CERT’s should be aware of. Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Massapequa High School junior Hope Breslin was named Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The award, presented by The Gatorade Company in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, distinguishes Hope as New York’s best high school girls soccer player and recognizes high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. The honor also places her as a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May. Hope, a forward, led the Chiefs (19-1-1) to their historic third straight Class AA state championship, scoring 27 goals and passing for 10 assists this past season. An All-East Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Hope was named both the Class AA Player

of the Year and the Long Island Player of the Year. She led her team to a No. 3 ranking nationally in the NSCAA/USA TODAY Super 25. She was also named play off Most Valuable Player last year. “Hope scored the winning goal in the New York State Championship game; she has great foot skills and is a very diverse player; she just keeps getting better and better,” said Coach Bruce Stegner. “For her to win this award as a junior is a huge accomplishment.” Hope said of the award, “When I found out I was so excited. This award means a lot to me, not only on an individual level, but for my team as a whole, which has been so successful. We all work together so well that it’s easier for success. Coach Stegner is so supportive. He’s really good at coaching.” Hope has committed as a sophomore to play soccer at Big 10’s University

of Illinois where she is considering studying law. She maintains a high academic average, is a peer mentor in her school, and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, youth soccer programs and Best Buddies International. “This honor is well deserved,” said John Piropato, director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics for the Massapequa School District. “Hope is an outstanding athlete and a well-rounded individual who truly exemplifies the spirit of this award.” With this distinction, Hope joins an elite alumni association of famous past state award-winners including Derek Jeter, Candace Parker, Alexi Lalas, Heather O’Reilly, and Mark Sanchez. She is also the fourth Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Massapequa High School.

Choices” Prevention Summit at Adelphi University with the goal of learning optimal ways to integrate substance abuse prevention services into schools. The students met with staff and students from other Long Island school districts to discuss their current school experiences, best practices and ideas on new prevention innovations. “The Massapequa School District is at the forefront of offering prevention programs to students,” said Kimberley Hession, Ames Campus social worker. “This year, over 70 students in grades 9-12 were trained through the Red Watch Band program, a Stony Brook University-developed school initiative designed to help bystanders learn to effectively respond to alcohol-related emergencies.” To date, under the advisement of Massapequa High School social worker Joanne Waters and Hession, the district has trained more than 300 students in the program. In addition, Hession and the Ames students spearheaded the development of a Massapequa chapter of the Active Minds Club, a nationwide mental health awareness club. Primarily, student members learn the importance of
