I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most
of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Fifth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District certainly know the alphabet, but recently found it a little more difficult to get from A to Z. Students in Susan Murphy’s class participated in a STEAM challenge in which they were given a set amount of materials and had to use it to make every letter. The supplies included paper clips, straws, toothpicks, a clothespin, aluminum foil, rubber bands, string and a pair of scissors. The challenge for each group, Ms. Murphy said, was to determine how to best utilize the materials to have enough to complete all 26 letters. They were judged on creativity, communication, effective use of materials and the amount of recognizable letters finished within 15 minutes.

Talent for Helping
The children used their knowledge of line and space to create their designs. “Wild Things” was the theme of a project that first- and second-graders completed using their imaginations and paint pens. The students read Maurice Sendak’s book “Where the Wild Things Are,” then created their own portraits of monsters. Inspired by Heather Galler’s folk art landscapes, fourth- and fifth-graders created their own pictures using markers, crayons and watercolor paint following a crayon resist technique. “It’s exciting to see how the students challenge themselves and take these ideas and go farther with it,” said Ms. Merz, who had displayed the work on bulletin boards throughout the school. “Art is a class that they are always excited to come to.”
A talent show at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District served two purposes. Not only did it provide students a forum to showcase their many abilities, it also reminded them about the importance of charity. More than 90 fourththrough sixth-grade
students participated in the show on April 25th, which featured two daytime performances and an evening show. Acts featured singing and dance routines. Instead of buying tickets, guests were asked to bring in canned goods and other nonperishable items for the food pantry at Our
Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa Park. Fourthgrade teacher Terri LiCausi, who has been organizing the talent show for the past decade, said this is a time of year when supplies at food pantries run low. She added that this is East Lake’s way of giving back to the community.

Take Heart With Tea The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Mr. Burke said he expects that 3-D printers will eventually become what the microwave was 30 years ago — a novelty item that turned into a household necessity. With six classes of Design and Draw for Production offered at Ames this year, he said students are realizing the value in a course that prepares them for jobs in growing industries. “This is a great fundamental course and this technology is going to become even more popular,” he said. “Being able to design something and being able to 3-D print it is awesome.”
On a brisk but sunny afternoon, members of the Science Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus watched their rockets rise and fall, the culmination of weeks of planning and creating. The ninth-graders recently launched their soda bottle rockets on the back-field after school and competed to see whose could stay up the longest.
Even the best-designed creations were only airborne a mere fraction of the time the rockets took to build. The lessons in physics, engineering and aerodynamics, along with the problem-solving skills developed, made it all worthwhile. Students worked individually or in teams under the direction of science teachers Nicholas
Donohue and Maureen Burke. Once they reached the field, they filled their bottles halfway with water. The rockets were then pressurized and launched. Each device also carried an egg, as students had to come up with a design that could protect it upon the rocket’s impact with the ground.

Mr. Burke said students create several projects throughout the year including keychains, Massapequa “M” identification card holders, chess pieces and Legos. Last year’s big project was a 3-D version of the Ames floor plan, and this year students are making their own fidget spinners. At the end of the yearlong course, students choose their own project and ninth-grader Jack Chillemi is designing a charging dock for his phone. “I like that I have freedom to create what I want,” said Jack, who aspires to be an engineer. “It’s cool that ideas go from my imagination to then seeing them in real life.” He added that he likes

New Dimension Three-dimensional printing, once considered the future of technology, is very much the present in the Massapequa School District. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, enrollment continues to grow in the Design and Draw for Production Class which focuses on the expanding technology. Teacher Matt Burke said the class began more than a decade ago as a handdrafting and mechanical drawing program, and has since evolved to incorporate more technology. Students use industry-standard software such as Inventor, SketchUp and Tinkercad to create their designs, which are then generated on one of three 3-D printers.
