Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

For the 11th consecutive year, the Massapequa School District was recognized for its music program by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Massapequa was one of 623 school districts nationwide that earned the Best Communities for Music Education distinction in 2019. For the past 20 years, the Best Communities for Music Education program has acknowledged schools and districts across the country for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. The survey measured a variety of factors, including

budgetary commitment to music, opportunities to learn music, the presence of highly qualified music teachers, adherence to state and national standards, types of musical experiences offered and opportunities for performance and competition. The district offers general music instruction beginning in kindergarten and students learn to play the recorder in third grade. Upon entering fourth grade, children can select an instrument to play in the band or orchestra through high school, and also join the chorus. Concerts throughout the year allow students

to share their talents with their classmates, families and community members. Extracurricular opportunities include after-school ensembles and various musical theater productions, while the Summer Fine Arts program allows for year-round music instruction. During the 2018-19 school year, more than 100 student musicians from the elementary, middle and high school levels were selected to the 2019 All-County Music Festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association. Thirteen students were chosen for Long Island String

Festival Association ensembles and six Massapequa High School vocalists represented the district at the 2019 AllEastern Honors Ensemble sponsored by NMEA.

Chocolate Molding & Dipping

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

To continue fostering a positive school climate and culture, McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District held its first Character Building Week from March 25-29. Each day had a different theme, including Positive Monday, Superhero Tuesday, Feel Good Wednesday, Mindful Thursday and Teamwork Friday. There were schoolwide activities that built camaraderie among students and staff. Students wrote positive messages on paper links, which were turned into chains and hung

throughout the school. For the compliment tree, each child was asked to write a nice message about a classmate on a leaf-shaped piece of paper. The Junior Chiefs Helping Hands club created the “McKenna Says” board with messages of encouragement and kindness. To foster collaboration, first-grade students partnered with their fifth-grade buddies to make posters about teamwork. Throughout the week, students were asked to wear clothing that matched the theme such as shirts with positive messages, superhero shirts

and blue and gold attire. There were also songs tied to the daily theme like “We’re All in This Together” for Teamwork Friday. “Each day had a different way for students to view themselves, with the goal of having a more positive outlook,” Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said. “There was just a positive vibe the whole week, and the students became more conscientious how they speak and the decisions they are making.”

Building Community

During a recent lesson on community in second-grade classrooms at Unqua Elementary School, it was fitting that Massapequa High School students served as the instructors. The High School Heroes program, through Junior Achievement, focused on a variety of concepts relating to local and global communities such as business and careers, finances, government, innovation and voting. The second graders participated in numerous hands-on activities. fictitious money, and had to decide how to spend it on a school beautification initiative. They weighed the pros and cons of a recycling program, butterfly garden and art display. Children also received fake money and watched as the high school students came and took some of it away, to understand about paying taxes. Denise DeLury, the district’s school-to-career coordinator, said this is the 12th year that Massapequa has offered the Junior Achievement program. She said skills emphasized through the curriculum include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, decision-making, idea development, Making choices, map reading, problem-solving and speaking and listening. Interested high school students can sign up for the program, and many who do

are considering careers in education. Students attend a training session after school with Ms. DeLury and a representative from Junior Achievement to learn about classroom management, questioning techniques and lesson planning. Junior Achievement provides the kits with the resources for five different lessons. “The high school students get a chance to see what the teaching profession is all about from planning to instruction to classroom management,” Ms. DeLury said. “It helps them to determine if this is a career they would like pursue. Many of the students sign up to teach in their former elementary school and some of them in their former teacher’s classroom. It is a wonderful program.”

PLENTY OF SPIRIT - Spirit Week, an annual tradition at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, culminated with sports day on March 29. Students were encouraged to represent their favorite professional teams or local Massapequa teams. The sixth grade won the grade-level competition to earn the Spirit Week Cup. Each sixth-grade homeroom will get to host the cup for a day. Other themes during the week, which included pajama day and the red, white and blue color war. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.
