Air Show Set To Take Off Continued From 7 New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to help bring what has become one of the most anticipated, largest public events in New York State, right here to Jones Beach each year, for all to enjoy.” The United States Navy Blue Angels will be making their sixth Bethpage Air Show appearance. New to the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is the MV-22 Osprey, a multi-mission, military, tilt rotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, highspeed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The United States Marine Corps and Air Force operate the Osprey. John Klatt Airshows’ – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, unveiled recently at the International Council of Air Shows in Las Vegas, will also be making its Bethpage Air Show debut. The airplane, a Taperwing Waco made famous by barnstormers of the 1920s and 30s, adds the modern twist of a jet engine that will thrill spectators with amazing sights and sounds. John Klatt, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Jeff Boerboon, a U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Champion, will pilot the Screamin’ Sasquatch. As a result, the Council advised students to keep this sentiment in mind when posting to social media: “Don’t post anything that you wouldn’t want your grandmother to see.”

The presentations are part of the Advisory Council’s long-range mission to protect and inform students and parents as the number of social media sites expand and evolve. Last fall, the Council’s initial social media presentation at Massapequa High School drew about 60 parents and was very well received, according to Dr. Thomas Fasano, assistant to the superintendent for curriculum and instruction who advises the Council in collaboration with Massapequa High School Principal, Dr. Barbara Williams and Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus Principal Patrick DiClemente.

Five teams from the Massapequa School District competed in the New York State Odyssey of the Mind contest at Binghamton University April 12th after dominating the regional tournament last month. While no trophies were brought home, students called the opportunity “a once-in-alifetime experience” that gave them a great sense of accomplishment. Odyssey of the Mind is an International educational program based on creative problem-solving. Students select from a variety of problems that range from building mechanical

devices to interpreting literary classics and compete at the local, state and world levels. A team from Fairfield and another from Unqua competed at the Division I level for grades 1-5. Fairfield’s team members, coached by Jennifer Tand, included Ethan Jackson, Joseph Mocniak, Brian Bongiorno, Aryon Seraji and Joseph Rollo. Unqua’s team, coached by Loree Moran, consisted of Alyssa Buback, Erin O’Grady, Addison Taylor, Annabelle Lesser and Caroline Pappas. Two more teams, one from McKenna and another

from Lockhart, competed at the Division II level for grades 6-8. McKenna’s team members, coached by Elizabeth Natke, included Daniel Lobaccaro, Matthew Prusan, Aidan Gregory, Jared Gould Christopher Merlini and Christopher Bruhnke. Lockhart’s team, coached by Joanne Markowski, consisted of Joseph Pattay, Talia Cartafalsa, Kirstin Lisnoff, Juliette Liebov and Jessica Gruenfelder. A team from Massapequa High School competed on the Division III level for grades 9-12. Team members were Amanda Gordonson, Joe Mottola, Mackenzie Conkling, and Courtney Conkling. The team was coached by Matthew Swanson. “We are very proud of our students for attaining this opportunity to compete at the state level and for displaying exemplary levels of levels creativity, collaboration and problemsolving throughout this year’s competitions,” said Superintendent Lucille Iconis, who attended the state tournament.

Learn To Skate

STUDYING SPRING - Webelo Scouts of Massapequa Pack 696 journeyed up to Sand’s Point this week to take an early look at spring. The scouts had a guided tour of the grounds and Sand’s Point Nature Preserve which allowed them to look at tadpoles in various stages, identify the winter version of poison ivy, and study growth patterns of tree moss and fungi. The scouts were particularly interested in the man-made bat houses and rodent bones found in owl pellets.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Maacagnone. “Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Registration for Series 5 (May 3rd through June 26th, 2014) will begin on April 19th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or

Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.
