Stamping Out Hunger

Just in time for the grand opening of its 46th season on April 8th, the Long Island Game Farm showed visitors its newly acquired alpacas as part of its expanding animal exhibit. The Game Farm received the animals from the Ceruti family of

Shoreham, who have been longtime friends of the Game Farm. The Cerutis donated their backyard pet alpaca herd, consisting of Rosie and her yearling Robbie; Sophie and her yearling Rusty; Gracie and her yearling Zoe; and one female named Melanie.

Alpacas are a domesticated species of the South American camelid, resembling a small Llama in appearance, but considerably smaller. They have a silky fleece that covers their bodies and are shorn each year, producing between five and eight

pounds of fleece annually. Some of their colors are black, white, brown and gray. Their wool is waterrepellent and is used for making coats, sweaters and blankets. They are able to live in semi-arid habitats and are native to South American countries, including Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. They also have cloven hooves that help them negotiate steep mountainous terrain. Alpacas are herbivores, their diets consisting mainly of hay, grass and ferns. They are also known as ruminants (or cudchewing animals). They have a height of 40 inches and weigh from 100 to 175 pounds. An alpaca can live up to 20 years.

New Residents They are now living happily at the Game Farm and are looking forward to seeing guests and eating out of their hands. In the spring, they will have their coats shorn to make them more comfortable in the summer months. Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm will be using the alpaca fleece to make nuno-felted scarves, which will be for sale at the Game Farm and other local venues. Profits will be donated to The Butterfly Effect Project of Riverhead and Bellport, an organization close to Ms. Novak and Game Farm staff member Scarlett Green, who volunteer their time with the organization. The Butterfly Effect

Project is a non-profit organization that empowers underprivileged girls ages nine to 13 by giving them the tools to assist them in achieving academic and emotional stability and a self-confident future, which will bring forth a generation of women who are strong, independent and knowledgeable. The group’s mission is to ensure that every girl who is enrolled in the program has a fair chance to broaden their horizons while eliminating the normal obstacles, such as social mobility, cultural differences and finances. relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of

volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,”

explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United

It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

HOMELESS AWARENESS - On April 18th & 19th, youth from Venturing Crew 130, along with other Venturers from Nassau County, participated in a homeless awareness and service program. The youth spent the evening sleeping in a cardboard box with little comfort items. Each also helped to collect and sort donated clothing and toiletries while others prepared a hot breakfast to serve to those less fortunate in NYC. Other Crews that participated were 46 (Farmingdale), 556 (Port Washington) and 577 (North Bellmore). For new and returning members, you can apply for golf membership registration at the Golf Course’s Operations Building held each Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On the grounds of the golf course, a turn-ofthe-century mansion clubhouse offers The Woodlands Catering Facility and Golf Bar and the “Upstairs at the Mansion” Restaurant (516.921.5707). Golfers can also take a break at the “Halfway House,” located on the 8th tee, where they will have access to amenities such as restroom facilities and a snack bar. In addition, golfers have access to a fully equipped pro shop and a full range of

Patrons are guaranteed an outstanding experience and enjoyable atmosphere. The Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful, championship golf course in Woodbury ranks among the most popular municipal courses on Long Island. With the cold weather months finally over, playing a round of golf seems like a perfect way to settle into the warm weather. The second Proof-of-residency may be an automobile registration, utility bill or Town of Oyster Bay property tax bill. The Golf Course will be closed on Mondays. With senior prom and other festivities on the horizon, Massapequa High School, in partnership with the Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Police Department, conducted an extremely realistic Motor Vehicle Accident Simulation on the school’s football field as a way to “shock and awe” more than 1,200 juniors and seniors into avoiding dangerous behaviors that could put their lives at risk. “We want you to see the agony and anguish firefighters go through every day so you don’t make a decision that could be fatal,” said Massapequa Fire Chief Gerard Keuchler to the crowd. The biennial event, first brought to Massapequa High School five years ago, consists of a staged, two-car auto accident involving an intoxicated driver and multiple victims, played by members of the high school’s drama department and the Massapequa Fire Department Juniors. One victim ends up on the hood of a car, DOA, while the driver staggers out of the car obviously under the influence. The Massapequa Fire Department handles extrication, patient care and removal of victims

Adopting A Pet: How To Choose Your Best Match (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would

be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise. 3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with

children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house. 4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life. One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter criteria such as age, breed and size of the pet you want. Most pets available through adoption are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and licensed, and are often microchipped for a very affordable adoption fee. Women in Hempstead, New York are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity, Nassau County (HFHNC) is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event. On May 2nd and May 6th, local volunteers will be responsible for raising all four walls as well as installing the roof shell for HFHNC’s brand new home build in Hempstead. This home will mark the launch of the third home constructed by HFHNC in that neighborhood. Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Supervisor, will be in attendance to support the large group of volunteers expected. “For decades, Habitat for Humanity has made the American dream of home ownership a reality for neighbors in our area and across our nation,” Murray said. “I thank

Nassau County Habitat for Humanity, Lowe’s and all volunteers and supporters for bringing National Women Build Week to Hempstead Town. This is a wonderful opportunity for women in our area to help fellow neighbors in need achieve their dreams.” Wayne Hall, Mayor of the Village of Hempstead will be speaking to the media and the volunteers to thank them for their support. National Women Build Week, held May 2nd-10th, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities.
