Mobile Outreach Returns Suffolk County United Veterans received another visit to the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with 652 pounds of fresh produce and 181 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items. The donation was for Veterans and their family members in need which helped to provide over 541 meals, and which supplements items available at the Food Pantry, which receives funding throughout the year from Long Island Cares to stock its shelves. “The work SCUV does in helping align veterans with everything they need ranging from housing to job development programs is inspiring, and Long Island Cares is proud to partner with them as much as possible to support their vital work,” said Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Public Policy, The Chapin Center for Public Policy, Long Island Cares. Ms.
Massimo, Program Director for Suffolk County United Veterans added, “We are grateful to Long Island Cares, who continue to provide tremendous support for our Veterans.” The John J. Lynch Vets Place food pantry is located at 32 Mill Road in Yaphank, NY and is open to all Veterans, Military, and their family each Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Suffolk County United Veterans, founded in 1989, serves the homeless and at-risk Veterans and their families of Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. Our organization operates eight sites of progressively-tiered housing in conjunction with a comprehensive range of programs and support services. Tickets are now on sale for the fourth annual Taste of Tuckahoe fundraiser, benefiting the Tuckahoe School. The event will be held on Friday, April 25th from 7 to 10 p.m. at 230 Elm, with restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and wineries from the East End coming together under one roof to highlight their culinary talents and signature drinks for the community to enjoy. Diane Berger, principal of the Children’s Learning Center at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc., (CLC-UCP) was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Berger represented the CLCUCP, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s
budget. “The philosophy that drives our school is that each of our students deserve the best of what their peers in public school receive, and we are determined to give that to them,” said Principal Diane Berger. “We believe that CLC makes a major impact on public education by being a partner in caring about students and directly providing the foundation they need to succeed. CLC is a special education school with an emphasis on the word ‘special.’” The Children’s Learning Center has been serving special needs children on Long Island for more than 60 years, with an annual enrollment of 250. Students with moderate to severe disabilities from the ages 1-21 are served by a devoted faculty consisting of more than 200 educators, clinicians, support staff and administrators. Each year, approximately 45 preschool students graduate from the center and return to their home districts. Students receive special education and therapeutic services in a state-of-theart educational setting that includes a smartboard in every classroom, music and art therapy, and numerous exracurriculars including clubs, field trips and special events. Among the activities available to students are Boy and Girl Scouts, chorus, cheerleading, dance team, and a trio of ballet clubs that have performed at
the Tilles Center. They enjoy special events such as concerts and plays, Homecoming and Prom, and embark on field trips including overnight camping trips, attendance at Broadway plays and museum sleepovers. The center’s mission is “to provide the highest quality services to the children and adults,” and a large contributing factor to the success of that mission is the CLC’s long-standing, mutually supportive relationships with Long Island school districts. CLC faculty works closely with district staff to assess student progress and plan for the future. But the partnership goes beyond educators and curriculum — the students get involved as well. The Roosevelt High School championship football team, cheerleaders and marching band take part in the center’s Homecoming Parade each year. The Carle Place and West Islip high school bands and orchestras perform regularly at CLC assemblies. And for the past 15 years, the Wheatley School has sponsored a student carnival for the center and annually invites CLC classes to join them for Wheatley’s Intercultural Unity Day. There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”
through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post
that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Among its key initiatives is the Youth Advisory Council, an opportunity for Long Island youth to
serve as decision-makers, to positively impact their community, and to broaden their perspectives. ALS Lesson Learned
Unqua Elementary School students in grades 5 and 6 met former teacher Chris Pendergast on April 2nd as he visited with students to discuss ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. P endergast was diagnosed many years ago with ALS and travels the country to educate students and raise money to find a cure. Unqua will be part of this year’s Ride for Life on May 13th, as Pendergast and others suffering with ALS travel in their wheelchairs to spread the word about ALS.

In an effort to increase college readiness, the Guidance Department at the Massapequa High School – Ames Campus took 30 ninth graders to College Awareness Day at Adelphi University. The group toured the campus, spoke to college students, addressed questions to admissions
representatives and even sampled lunch. The trip gave students the opportunity to see what college life is like, the majors that are available, and the university’s academic expectations. The trip was a culmination of the department’s effort to supplement the education
students receive about career-planning. In addition, the entire freshman class will learn about a host of careers from accomplished Massapequa graduates during the 7th Annual Alumni Career Day scheduled for Friday, April 25th.

Holy Trinity’s principal, Mr. Gene Fennell recently announced Daniel Frumento of Valley Stream as Valedictorian and Kathleen Horan of North Massapequa as Salutatorian of the Class of 2014. Daniel Frumento came to Holy Trinity from Long Island Lutheran in Brookville. During his years at Holy Trinity he has been very involved in different aspects of student life. He was inducted as a Eucharistic Minister at the end of his junior year, sings as part of Music Ministry and is part of the senior faith leadership
program “L.I.G.H.T.s”. Mr. Frumento was Editorin-Chief of the yearbook and is also active in the Performing Arts Department. He sings with the Select Choir and was cast as “Adolfo Pirelli” in last year’s school music, “Sweeney Todd”. This year, he will play “Christopher Belling”, in the musical comedy, “Curtains”. Mr. Frumento will be attending Georgetown University in the fall to pursue a degree in Political Science with a minor in Musical Theatre. Salutatorian Kathleen Horan attended Maria Regina in Seaford prior to coming to Holy Trinity. Ms. Horan is President of the National Honor Society, a yearbook editor and an executive member of the school’s Respect Life Club. She has also been part of Holy Trinity’s Science Olympiad team and Volleyball team. Like Mr. Frumento, she also became a Eucharistic Minister and is also part of

Reflections Program Success On April 9th, talent and passion was on display as Birch Lane Elementary in Massapequa Park celebrated its more than 45 entries in the National PTA Reflections program. The Reflections program, which brings families, schools and communities together in support of student success through the arts, showcased artistic talent and work that ranged from dainty watercolor paintings to touching
short films to luminous photography. Children submitted their entries in November, with every one inspired by this year’s national theme, Believe, Dream, Inspire. Artists from kindergarten through sixth grade entered the contest, choosing one or more of six categories: photography, visual arts, literature, dance choreography, music composition, and film production. Entries were
judged with a rubric that took into account not only artistic talent, but how well they understood the theme and were able to tie it to their projects through a written statement. Winners were chosen at the building level by subject matter expert judges so they could move on to the Nassau County level of the event. Birch Lane advanced 23 entries to Nassau County, and two of the 23 – from two
Birch Lane sixth graders -- moved on to the New York State level. The winning pieces included a photograph taken by Jaclyn Portogallo and a film production directed and shot by Olivia Walls. The April 9th event recognized the hard work of Portogallo and Walls as well as all of the other children who participated in the contest. Every child who attended the ceremony, which took place in the Birch Lane
general purpose room, received a trophy or medal. The children also received a special pizza luncheon brought in by the Birch Lane PTA. “Our school district has an amazing art program and truly passionate, talented children,” explained Maureen Feliciano, 2013-2014 Reflections Co-chair. “It was amazing to see the thought and care that went into every entry. We’ve got kids who are
already thinking about next year’s theme, ‘The World Would Be a Better Place If...’ I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.” The winners of the state level will be announced later this month.
