The money was donated to pancreatic cancer research in honor of the Voigt and Cosenza families who have experienced tragic losses

Hungry for more palate-pleasing options, McKenna Elementary School Student Council invited School Lunch Director Paul Heckelman to a question-and-answer session on how to enhance the school lunch program. First raising ecological concerns, students suggested the use of more environmentally friendly food trays and discussed what to do with the fruits and vegetables that haven’t sold. They also asked if fruit smoothies, a self-

serve salad bar, more soup selections, more juice and better utensils “that don’t bend when you butter a bagel” could be incorporated into the program. The students learned that school menus are developed in accordance with strict state and federal guidelines to ensure optimal nutrition. However, Heckelman said he is always looking for ways to improve the program and will take their suggestions into

consideration as he plans for the next school year. Heckelman, through feedback from the PTAs in each school, arranged for students to taste test some proposed menu items during their lunch periods. He introduced students to a healthy, more flavorful pizza and stuffed breadsticks with mozzarella. Both received rave reviews from the most discerning young samplers. In fact, “sales are up 10-15 percent,” Heckelman said.

Massapequa choral students, along with those from Huntington, Rockville Centre and South Huntington, worked collaboratively throughout the day to learn two selections from local composer and arranger Roger Ames. Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

people.” Councilman Muscarella noted that the success of the Blood Drive has twice earned the Town of Oyster Bay the prestigious New York Blood Center’s “Silver Award,” recognizing outstanding employee participation. “It’s something of which we’re all proud,” the Councilman commented. “As our program continues to grow, perhaps one day we will be the recipient of a gold award.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that the locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and

76 or older with a doctor’s note dated within one year of donation), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. The Councilman noted that all blood types are needed, but O negative blood types are universal and especially needed at this time of need. He added that the Town will provide refreshments for everyone who donates. “Please help us make this blood drive a huge success,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “If you are not able to give, perhaps you know someone who can. The Town of Oyster Bay semi-annual blood drive will take place on Thursday, April 24th, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella. Lifeguards Wanted

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is currently seeking individuals interested in working as a lifeguard for the 2014 summer season. “Town of Oyster Bay lifeguards not only carry with them a sense of pride, but they have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful setting during the summer at one of the Town’s pristine beaches or pools,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Being a

lifeguard is no easy task, however, and is meant for those who are experienced swimmers and up for the challenge of protecting residential swimmers and beach attendees.” Supervisor Venditto noted that any interested applicants must possess a current Nassau County Department of Health Lifeguard Certification Card and a current CPR/ AED Certification Card. Qualified applicants may apply in person at the

Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa). “Having a summer job as a lifeguard is a rewarding and exciting opportunity,” Supervisor Venditto said. “They provide an invaluable service to the community. Serving as a lifeguard also helps build confidence, self-esteem, and friendships. It’s a great way to spend a summer.”

On March 21st, Massapequa experienced one of its biggest charity events in its history! Catch A Wave for Winthrop was a beach themed charity event that raised nearly $4,000 for Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids! A stroll down the high school’s main hallway was Catch a Wave’s Boardwalk, featuring Massapequa High School’s many clubs who acted as vendors! As people strolled down the beach themed hallway they felt as if they were in the midst of summer eating Italian Ices and wearing sunglasses. Inside the gym was a benefit concert filled with Massapequa’s most talented musicians. Admissions not only raised for the hospital but students and parents were able to vote on which postcards, created by Art and English Language Arts students, they wanted sent to Winthrop with their ticket. The house band, with seniors Brittany Garcia and Tom Morse alongside juniors Angelica Ansbacher, Rob Catinella, Julie Kapuvari, Brandan Lawrence and John Witt, were already playing an infectious tune that got the mood going as everyone entered the gym. Students sat on blankets and tossed beach balls in the air as they waited for the concert to begin. Seven-year-old Sadie Freifield, a cancer patient in remission, and her mom, Beth Freifield, who about Winthrop Hospital and thanked the Massapequa Community. Additional highlights of the event included the many raffles donated by sports booster clubs and community business, student musical performers and bands such as Spectrum and Vigil Antics, as well as the colorful decorations hand crafted by the National Art Honor Society. Co-coordinators for Catch A Wave for Winthrop Natalie Gramegna, Brandan Lawrence and Ryan Schulte along with their advisors Mrs. Gale Domingo, Mr. Robert Hempel and Mrs. Christine Starr are immensely proud of the night and their ability to continue their third annual project for Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids.
