Buddy 2.0 expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

SCOPE Awards Dinner

Jonathan Mosenson has been presented The Long Island Family and Consumer Science (LIFACS) Professionals’ Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Mosenson teaches at the Plainedge Middle School. During the awards breakfast held at Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center in Riverhead on March 20th, he said, “It is a pleasure serving the LIFACS

organization in helping further the awareness and the importance of what we teach in our classrooms. We offer students the ability to take what they learn in all their classes and apply them to real world situations.” LIFACS is a subchapter of the New York State association. It supports teachers in the classroom and helps to keep the content area alive. Workshops and conferences are provided

to support teachers with new ways to enhance and enrich real-life experiences for students. Teachers use the STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is the only professional association dedicated to teaching family and consumer science to students from multiple practice settings and content areas.

Leading Long Island’s public schools to greatness – that was the theme of SCOPE’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. The annual event was part of SCOPE’s celebration of 50 years serving children and their families. More than 140 employees from dozens of school districts across Long Island were honored for their extraordinary contributions and dedication during the 2014-2015 school year. Awards were presented in five categories: School Board Service, Community Service, Teacher Service,

Support Staff Service and Administrator Service. Honorees in these five categories received a personalized plaque in recognition of their outstanding achievements. In his welcoming remarks, SCOPE Executive Director George Duffy thanked those in attendance for serving their communities with such dignity and dedication. He also thanked them for addressing the challenges that thousands of students face on a daily basis. Susan Schnebel, president of SCOPE’s Board of Directors and superintendent of the Islip School District, addressed

the honorees by telling those assembled: “Those being honored this evening are the cornerstones of our community. They are extremely passionate and proud.” Mr. Duffy individually acknowledged the honorees in each of the five categories as they were called on stage to receive their plaques. Afterward, many honorees commented on how grateful they were to be recognized, as well as how much the recognition had inspired them to continue to strive for excellence each day in their communities.

Alzheimer’s Education On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil

Boyle. The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for

Alzheimer’s Disease. Eileen Kane-Gemmell, MPA, RDN, CDN, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired. Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the

laws and regulations that support resident-centered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first

time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote, guests

enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. The conference was hosted by the Lillian & Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center®. Presenting sponsors included The Bristal Assisted Living and Winthrop University Hospital. There’s been a recent up tick in beneficiaries interested in the program and she now has 35 members taking advantage, she said, most likely because insurance companies have been notifying plan subscribers about the program. “I’m glad that people are finally realizing that it is better to keep themselves healthy, because it is so much harder to cure an illness or fix something once it is diagnosed,” Ms. Esposito said. “The hardest part is getting there. Once they are here, we can motivate them.” Lee Dugan, an instructor with Maximus Health and Fitness in Riverhead, has been teaching classes for the older generation for almost a decade, helping people as young as 65, and as old as 90, remain young. Participants at the Riverhead gym have the opportunity to take classes designed with a senior’s well-being in mind, using

seated exercises and body resistance that can be adapted for all skill levels. Sitting in her class on a snowy Thursday afternoon, 85 year-old Mel Rosenberg of Riverhead could be seen lifting weights with confidence. “I started right after I had a stroke, about seven years ago,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “Now, you have no idea how much I look forward to coming here. When I wake up in the morning I don’t often feel like doing much of anything, but after coming here I feel like I could do it all.” “A lot of the exercises we do are basic functions that can help them to weather the storm,” Ms. Esposito said. “They also enjoy the companionship from other members, making it a social experience as well. We also have many couples joining together, as a team.” Nicole Mohr, a trainer with ELIH, said that some members had never done any of the exercises before, but added that “it is never too late to start.” “We will work with them, and get them feeling confident,” Ms. Mohr said. “Just like life, we take it one step at a time.” For more information about the program visit silversneakers.com.

Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals. Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the

usual amount of red cells in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year.
