Second Half School Taxes Due “By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to April 1st.” Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at
Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. The Time of the Season struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be
understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.
There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve
the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top. Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

celebrate the opening of the new field was hosted by East Lake Elementary School Principal Thomas McKillop and included remarks from Assistant Superintendent Dr. Thomas Fasano, varsity baseball coach Tom Sheedy, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and local youth baseball league officials. John Piropato, the director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. After the national anthem, it was time to play ball.
Animal Adventure There were some “oohs,” “aahs” and even a few “ewws” as second-graders at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District got an upclose look at reptiles. Dennis Fleury, director of the Tackapausha Museum, brought several
creatures to the school on March 23rd including a skink, a bearded dragon, a hog-nosed snake and an African ball python snake. Students touched the reptiles and learned about critters that are indigenous to Long Island. Second-grade teacher
Meredith O’Pasek said that the presentation served as an introduction to the animal unit in science. Throughout the spring, students will study different types of animals and their characteristics.

Family Fun Spring Fest Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents and their families to a Spring Festival on Saturday, April 28th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located on Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. The Spring
Festival will be held rain or shine. “This free event is a great opportunity for residents to enjoy our park and celebrate the arrival of spring with a full afternoon of activities, games and attractions that are sure to entertain

Pinewood Derby & Cub Carnival
On Saturday, March 24th, the Pequott District held its annual Pinewood Derby and Cub Carnival at the Center Point Church In Massapequa. Every year, each Cub Scout pack holds a Pinewood Derby within their unit. Each boy has the opportunity to make their own car out of a piece
of wood. All of the packs of the district sent their fastest cars to the district race. While the cars are racing, the boys have the opportunity to participate in a Carnival. All of the games at the carnival are run by the Cub Scout pack units. They had games like
skeeball, mini golf, the spinning wheel and many more. With the tickets the boys won, they got to choose toys at the prize table. They also had door prizes. All of the families that participated had a blast.

The student council at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District collected baby clothes and pajamas for children to support Jake’s Jammies. It is an initiative of the Massapequa Park-based Ashley Wade Foundation,
