Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Excessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in runoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans. In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more susceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Browsing The Archives

Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

The Bunsen Berners Science Olympiad Team from Alfred G. Berner Middle School won a third-place medal at the 2014 Division B Regional Competition after going against 39 other schools throughout Nassau County in more than 20 events centered on science, technology, and engineering. The team came in 16th place overall. Ryan Catapano and Luke Colavita placed third in the “Crime Busters”

event. Ninth graders Christopher Hadsall, Liam Bach, Morgan Schnee, John Yevoli, Michael Lam, Stephen Urli, Antonio Gargano and Giovanni D’Agostino; eighth graders James Oates, Mary Glynn and Ella Schnee; and seventh graders Ariana Fang, William LaMassa and Nino Baghshvili were integral members of the team. “The team could not have gotten this far without the assistance of

Performing two different styles of Irish step dancing, Gabriella and Fiona introduced the students to dances that require the use of the soft, ballet-type shoe, also called ghilles as well as the use of the hard, fiberglass-heel shoe that makes the famous “clickity-clack” we all associate with Irish step dancing. The Massapequa High School Robotics Team, Robo Chiefs, will compete in its first VEX Robotics World Championship in Anaheim, California, April 23rd-26th. The team earned the chance to compete on a global scale, against 800 teams from 26 countries, after winning the Southern New York State Championship held at Adelphi University. The VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, challenges middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to compete in an engineering challenge in the form of a game. Teams use the VEX Robotics Design System to build robots designed to score the most points possible. Team members Shane Murphy, Liam Byrnes-Cunningham, Robert DePietro, Richard Gordonson, Christina DeLuca, Brian O’Sullivan, Sarah Goklevent and Adam Carrero are excited to bring Massapequa to the world championship. “The team’s biggest strengths are cooperation, teamwork and dedication,” said Coach Brian Vanek. “I knew that, as long as the students continued to work together, they would be great at the state competition. But even more important than the trophies are the teamwork, cooperation, problemsolving skills and robot-designing skills the students develop; and they have done a fantastic job already this

year.” Regionally, the Robo Chiefs won the championship title and the Design Award at the VEX Robotics Competition at East Rockaway High School. They also took first place at the Adelphi University Toss Up Qualifier with a final round score of 47-0 and won the Tournament

Champions Award as well as the highest judges’ award, the Excellence Award. The Massapequa School District nurtures students’ interest in robotics as early as elementary school with introductory lessons in the district’s academically gifted program, Magnet. In middle school, every student

Advancing To Worlds receives an introduction to robotics in seventh- and eighth-grade technology education classes. Robotics clubs at the middle and high school levels are offered during the school year and a one-week camp for middle schoolers is provided over the summer and coached by Vanek. The high school level also offers robotics as part of the Principles of Engineering course and the Product Design and Engineering (Robotics) course, and is introduced in the Digital Electronics course. According to Susan Thompson, chairperson of Career & Technology Education for the district, two areas of technology that will have a major impact on the future, are robotics and 3D printing. “Many students take the step to join the middle or high school robotics teams and take advanced courses beginning with Design & Drawing for Production in ninth grade,” Thompson explained. “In this course students learn to draw in a 3D modeling program and prototypes are printed on a 3D printer. By creating parts and building and programming robots, these students are not only developing creativity, innovation and collaboration skills, they are developing a lifelong, success mindset. That was so obvious to me as I watched our team compete. They were in a hyper-strategizing and problem-solving mode throughout the day. Their focus and hard work paid off with a fantastic win.”

Massapequa High School graduate Danielle DiVerde, now a junior at Arcadia University, was so inspired by her former Spanish teacher Ernest Kabelka that her essay nominating him for the university’s Pay It Forward — Get It Back scholarship contest was a winner for both of them. DiVerde was awarded a $1,000 study abroad scholarship and Kabelka won a trip to China this summer. The scholarship contest recognizes students and teachers “who have the opportunity to use their influence to change the world one student at a time,” according to university officials. DiVerde, an international studies and Spanish double major, credits Kabelka as a pivotal influence in her life and for shaping who she is today by fueling her passion for global exploration and deepening her understanding of languages and cultures around the world. In her essay, she recalls her days in his classroom, room 107, where “he would teach us Spanish in French, show us homemade videos of his travels everywhere from Texas to Nicaragua, and encourage dialogue and understanding of the language and culture of Latin America…” DiVerde also had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and Panama on a school trip with Kabelka, an experience she said genuinely impacted her life. According to the Arcadia University publication, “The Bulletin,” the scholarship is allowing DiVerde to study in Mexico and improve her fluency in Spanish by immersing herself in the community. Kabelka looks forward to recording his interactions with people in China this summer to show his students how language acquisition works.

are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn

and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower

and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath.

• High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this

March 2nd, the author’s birthday and the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day. Students read a variety of Dr. Seuss books and participated in activities that spanned the curriculum. They also had

a chance to express their creativity in honor of Dr. Seuss by wearing their favorite color from head to toe, wearing silly socks, or dressing as silly as their imaginations would allow.

Studying Ancient Greece Birch Lane Elementary School sixth graders researched and presented a Greek god or goddess to their classmates after studying Ancient Greece through their Integrated Social Studies/ELA Common Core curriculum. Showing their creative sides, the

students portrayed their god or goddess while summarizing a myth and the character traits their god possesses. These myths, which serve as the background to Greek history, range from love stories to violent battles, according to sixth-grade teachers Kathryn Pullen,

Lisa Veltre and Heather Kulok. group facilitator and the co-chair of the Steering Committee - all in the name of “mothers helping mothers.” In 2001, Diane - a multi-sport athlete who had earned the LILCO Scholar-Athlete award while at Great Neck North - found her true calling in youth sports. She took over the “Daddy & Me T-Ball” program - in which preschoolers play T-ball with parent partner - and has increased participation from 42 kids and their parents to more than 300. One of those participants, Diane’s second son, John, was born in 2004. In addition to T-Ball, from 2003 to 2011 she has coached both boys in Massapequa International Little League and ultimately became a board member of the organization. Currently she is the Events Coordinator and Communications

VP. In 2006, she served as the Little League’s Representative to Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto’s Commission on Youth Athletics, and between 2005 and 2012, she ran the Pitch, Hit, and Run competition for the Little League. Diane’s volunteer involvement has increased as her children have grown. In addition to enjoying her eighth opportunity to be class mother at her sons’ Elementary School, she’s a representative for both the Massapequa High School Diamond Club (Baseball Booster Club) and it’s Basketball Booster Club. Diane began working parttime for the Massapequa Water District in 2011, but that hasn’t diminished her dedication to the various organizations and people she cares about above all, her family. Sleep, she says, is overrated.

SPORTS NIGHT FUNDRAISER - Plainedge Middle School hosted its annual Sports Night on March 21st, with more than 200 students competing in various events to raise money for new equipment in the school’s weight room. Students went head to head in relay races, cage volleyball, crab soccer and a scavenger hunt and raised more than $1,200 for the cause.

Diane Perna’s commitment to volunteer work began immediately after graduating from Dartmouth College in 1985. During the 12 years she worked full-time as an accountant and bookkeeper for George Campbell Corp., she also fundraised for the Flushing YMCA, taught adults to read for the Literacy Volunteers of America and gave countless hours to the St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside. In 1995 Diane married Joseph Perna and moved to Massapequa. Shortly after the 1997 birth of their first son, Joseph, Diane volunteered at the non-profit Midshore Mothers’ Center (formerly Massapequa Mothers’ Center), where for the past 16 years she has functioned in roles such as childcare worker, registration and contact person, discussion

The walk will begin at 8 a.m. and ends at 12 noon from the show mobile to the finish line at the Marjorie Post Park. Total distance covered will be three miles. One hundred people are expected to participate. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it

accordingly. Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water

thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established. (ADRC) will be implementing a weekly caregiver telephone support group to provide caregivers with the reassurance and emotional support that they need when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease.
