relations for NEFCU. “This year’s scholarship recipients are all very bright, well-rounded individuals and we congratulate them for their academic achievements.” Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA). In addition to meeting the academic qualifications, applicants were required to answer an essay question, as well as provide a resume and an unofficial transcript from their school. Pet Expo A Success The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6th through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tristate, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend. “We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10-year old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano co-owner of Family Pet

RAISING FUNDS - Students at Grace Day School in Massapequa raised over $400 to help patients with leukemia & lymphoma. Under the direction of teacher, Mr. Joe Barbato, they participated in a program called Pennies for Patients. They joined students across the country by collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters over a three-week period. Their goal was to reach $300. They were very happy and surprised to learn that they had passed their goal amount by more than 25%. Congratulations on a great job, students!

Freshmen Present Findings Freshman students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute recently presented their findings in a major study aimed at reducing the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The teen scientists have been analyzing heavy metals in the local environment to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and insects. Students prepared posters representing the results of their research and presented them to an audience of parents and administrators from their home districts, as well as Nassau BOCES board members. Audience members reviewed the young scientists’ work and asked several probing questions about their findings. The presentation was essential to the learning process. Not only did students strictly follow

the scientific method, they discovered the value of communication in science. They even worked with a Shakespearean instructor from the Long Island High School for the Arts to hone their presentation skills. “This research has given our students a new perspective of the world around them and deepened their understanding of how humans are affecting the environment,” said Instructor Jennifer Galasso. “The presentation piece gave them an opportunity to reflect on the impact of their work and to present the results in a meaningful way. Communication is essential in the scientific community, so this experience is an invaluable one.” “Parents and educators alike from our partner districts were impressed by the poise and confidence of our students,” Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth said of the

poster presentations. “They possess a fundamental understanding of the research they are conducting, which is a direct result of their instruction.” “This experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” reflected Shawn Edouard from the Uniondale UFSD. “As we collected samples for our research, we learned how human industrialization is affecting our environment. From that point on, I personally started to look at the whole world from a different point of view.” “This project not only opened our eyes to what we, as humans, are doing to these poor organisms and how we’re destroying their environments,” noted Olivia Valentino from the Uniondale UFSD, “it also opened our minds to the knowledge we can learn as field researchers.”
