To further establish the transparency reforms promised by Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Oyster Bay Town Board is expanding a previously scheduled special work session at the Town’s next Town Board meeting on Tuesday, April 4th, at 10 a.m. at Oyster Bay Town Hall. Easy as Pi For anyone who loves numbers, March 14th marked a special date on the calendar. Although the Pi Day celebration was slightly belated because of snow, teachers at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District still planned numerous activities around the mathematical constant, 3.14. In Heather Kempter’s first-grade class, students learned that Pi is used to determine the size of
circles, a shape that can be found everywhere. They also discovered that Pi is so special that it gets its own symbol. Second-graders learned how to convert Pi to a fraction, then completed a measurement activity to find out the first 16 numbers of Pi. Tara Kennelly’s fifth-grade students used math compasses to draw circles of different sizes. After finishing their colorful creations, she read “Sir
Cumference and the Dragon of Pi.” James Sciara’s thirdgrade class celebrated Pi with pie. Students made their own paper pizza pies, with a full supply of “toppings” cut from colored pieces of construction paper. Each student measured the radius and diameter of the crust, and then used Pi to determine the circumference of their pizza.

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Pajama Drive Berner Middle School students may not have looked like they put much effort into their wardrobes on March 22nd, but by wearing their pajamas to school they raised awareness for an important cause. In addition to donning their nighttime attire during the day, students donated new sets of pajamas for infants, children and teenagers. The collection supported Jake’s Jammies, an initiative of the Ashley
Wade Foundation, which was founded by a former Massapequa student. The organization supports children and teens who are chronically ill and gives them a new pair of pajamas each time they enter the hospital. Members of Chiefs Challenge, a character education club, went around to classrooms collecting pajamas during homeroom. They also accepted monetary donations which will be
used to buy more pajamas. A donation box was also placed near the main entrance. The mission of Chiefs Challenge is to create a positive school climate through the six pillars of character - caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. Students build a sense of social responsibility and empathy through the club’s various charitable initiatives.

Sprachfest Forty-four students in the Massapequa School District’s World Language program participated in Sprachfest 2017 on March 18th, with several earning medals in various competitions. The annual event, coordinated by the American Association of Teachers of German, brings together students from all over Long Island for a day of games and events involving German language and culture. Participants included
students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Events included spelling, vocabulary, number and geography bees; music and vocal performances; baking and gingerbread house competitions; and a video contest. Gold award winners included Ryan Cassano in the baking contest (bundt cake) and number bee, and Margaret Smith in vocal performance. Other
students earning silver or bronze medals included Isabelle Alves, Nicole Dahlquist, John Gonzalez, Christopher Hadsall, Alexandra Kanapes, Andrew O’Brien, Angelica Radomski, Natasha Saar, Luke Scher, Daniel Wahl, Evan Warns, Joseph Whalen, Christian Williams and Joseph Yahner. The students were led by their German teachers Dean Guarnaschelli and Brigitte Kahn.
