Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration for the 2018 Summer Recreation Program is now open for children ages 4-12. The program runs from Monday, July 2nd through Friday, August 10th. This affordable summer recreation program includes exciting activities such as sports, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, sprinkler party, pizza party, Carnival Day and Crazy Hat Day. Children may also sign up for field trips to locations such as Adventureland, Splish Splash, a Day at the Movies and more (off-site activities depend on age and parental permission and require an additional fee). The program is separated into the following age categories: early childhood (Ages 4, 5 and 6); juniors (7-8); intermediate (9-10); and seniors (11-12). While the Summer Recreation Program offers a full day of activities for your child, it is broken up into a morning session (9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.) and an afternoon session (12:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.). All children must be picked up for the lunch hour as there is no supervision during that time. The Summer Recreation Program operates in the following six parks: Marjorie R. The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Becoming Biographers A written report was just one part of a biography unit at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, in which fifth-graders learned about important figures in society. Students used their Chromebooks to research a person of historical note, past or present, including world leaders, activists, scientists, athletes and entertainers. Their written reports had to include nonfiction text structures

such as a table of contents, subheadings and pictures with captions. Students could choose one of several formats, such as writing a chronological piece or selecting one aspect of a person’s life to focus on. The project didn’t end there. Several students embedded links to videos about their subjects within their reports. Anyone reading the report on paper could scan a QR code with their phone to access the videos.

At home, students made miniature versions of the their subjects. Each child started with a plastic bottle and added a head, clothing and any accessories to capture the essence of their person. “The students worked really hard and did a great job,” said fifth-grade teacher Mary Elizabeth Delaney. “They had to use a variety of resources and they learned so much.”

The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.

Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can ﬁt into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.

Clean designs reduce clutter

Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.

Incorporate a sink in the design

Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the ﬂoor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

Utilize a tension rod

A rod installed between two cabinets or across a narrow width of space in the

laundry room is a handy spot to hang shirts or pants to prevent wrinkling. Repurposing a ladder and suspending it from the ceiling also creates a spot to hang clothes.

Consider laundry room ﬂooring

An organized and efﬁcient laundry room setup can make washing and drying clothes easier.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. Resilient flooring that mimics the look of hardwood may add a classy touch, and give the appearance of wood without having to worry about damage. To alleviate fatigue

while spending long moments in the laundry room, invest in a memory foam mat that can be placed underfoot.

Keep lighting in mind

Lighting can be important in the laundry room. Rely on task lighting, under-cabinet strip lighting and overhead lights as needed for efﬁciency.

the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modiﬁcations so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs or ﬂowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can beneﬁt from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants ﬂourish throughout the growing season.

The Dental Plan For Everyone

Fourth-graders recently served as reading role models for kindergartners at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Christine Cardone’s class read to their younger peers in Gina Ring’s room on March 16th for their Books are Golden celebration. Each kindergartner chose a book from the classroom library for their fourth-grade

buddy to read. Selections included classics like “The Three Little Pigs” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to more modern books from the “How Do Dinosaurs?” series. After reading together, each student filled out a sheet with the name of the books, the name of the author and his or her favorite part of the story. The buddies then worked together on a St. Patrick’s

Day craft. Ms. Cardone explained that her fourth-graders helped the kindergartners with their literacy skills such as word pronunciation and reading comprehension. “The fourth-graders are positive role models for the kindergartners,” Ms. Ring added. “They see them reading, and then they want to learn how to read even more.”

LIBRARY EXHIBIT - To celebrate Woman’s History Month, the Women’s Club of Massapequa has an exhibit in the vestibule of the Central Avenue Public Library. Please visit the library to see pictures of life in the 1920’s to today regarding the changes for women throughout the decades. The exhibit runs until March 31st. To celebrate National Foreign Language Week, the Massapequa High School French Club and French Honor Society hosted a cultural celebration on March 16th. All students, regardless of the world language they take, were invited to visit the classroom that was transformed into a French café after school. French music played in the background as visitors enjoyed treats such as croissants, chocolate

mousse, macaroons and other delicacies. Along the wall hung flags from countries that have large French-speaking populations including Belgium, Canada, France and Luxembourg. There were also crafts that highlighted culture in French-speaking regions. Students could make bracelets at the Paris table, because the city is well known for fashion, create Mardi Gras masks and king hats at the New Orleans

table or make fish crafts for Tahiti. There were also photo booths with Frenchthemed backgrounds and props. Organizers included world language teachers Evelyne LeGoupil and Gheisha Rodriguez, French Club President Jackie Kanapes and French Honor Society President Victoria Bal. They said they enjoyed seeing people come together to celebrate French culture.

The Long Island Broncos Football and Cheerleading Organization is based in Seaford and was established in 1966. Their goal is, and always has been, to create a safe environment for our children to learn the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, along with the importance of good sportsmanship and being a team player. More than anything else, they want their kids to have fun on the field and mat, and to learn to love the game. They are looking forward to another great season, and they will once again be offering

free offseason clinics to registered Broncos (Speed and Agility, Viking-Bronco Never Quit Football Clinic, etc.), providing our coaches with proper training, including CPR/First Aid/ AED certifications, and making sure the Broncos are involved with various community events and service learning opportunities, all while learning the many important lessons that youth sports have to offer, including commitment, work ethic, sportsmanship and family. Online registration is currently open on

their website, and there are several payment options, including online installment payments. There will also be a Bronco Meet and Greet Night available on April 24th for anyone new to the Broncos who would like to come down and talk to Bronco representatives.
