Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Daniel Flinn of Massapequa became commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on March 15th. Dan calls his watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “Dan’s Navigators.” He has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest squadron grade possible, indicating that he has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship. He hopes others will follow this path, but this year he also wants squadron members to focus on increasing their public service efforts

and improve the diversity of squadron events. These public service efforts include presenting safe boating classes, providing free vessel safety checks, participating in environmental cleanups and more. Dan has been a veterinarian for 44 years and owner of the Jericho Animal Hospital. He and his wife Karen enjoy living on the water and look forward to retirement when they can spend more time aboard their boat “Doc’s Retreat”. Dan joined the United States Power Squadrons in 1985, but it wasn’t until 1999 that he started to take on leadership positions, first in the Jones Beach Power Squadron and then later

in United States Power Squadrons District 3 (Long Island). Now as District Commander, he takes on the leadership of all 16 squadrons across Long Island. Established in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons, “America’s Boating Club,” is the world’s largest non-profit boating organization

The Town of Oyster Bay has rescheduled its semiannual blood drive to Thursday, April 24th. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to accommodate other blood drives affected by the recent snow storms. Winter is traditionally a season when blood donations decrease while hospital and patient needs remain the same. The locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). Distinguished Teacher Honored

“Our awards recognize teachers who spend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, year after year,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Treasurer and Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Dedicated teachers like Mr. Bachman inspire students to dream, to work to accomplish those dreams, and to think rigorously about what they want their future to be.” One of a dozen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award — from across the 120 school districts on Long Island — Mr. Bachman will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on March 29. Following the award ceremony, Harry Lewis, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer

Science and former Dean of Harvard College, will give a lecture titled, “Reinventing Higher Education in the Information Age.” He is the author and co-author of numerous books, including Excellence Without a Soul: Does Liberal Education Have a Future?, Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion, and What is College For?: The Public Purpose of Higher Education. Mr. Bachman, who teaches Social Studies at Massapequa High School, has taught since 1996, first in New York City and for the past 14 years in Massapequa. His offerings include a wide range of courses, from AP U.S. History and AP Government to SCALE Criminology (a college accredited course), and introductions to various areas of law. Advising the Mock Trial team, which Mr.

Bachman has done since his first year at Massapequa, has become one of his favorite parts of teaching. After earning his undergraduate degree from Hofstra, majoring in History and Secondary Education, he was awarded an M.S. from Long Island University in Criminal Justice, where he won awards for academic excellence; he has since done extensive postgraduate work in Political Science. Besides teaching at the high school level, Mr. Bachman has served as an adjunct professor at LIU, teaching Criminological Theory, Criminal Justice Themes in Secondary Education, and Class, Race, and Gender Roles in Criminal Justice. Early in his career, Mr. Bachman also successfully taught a course in studio art. Married for seven years to Gail, with a four-yearold son, who occupies the vast majority of his free time, Mr. Bachman still volunteers with the Nassau County Police Athletic League where he teaches martial arts and sponsors numerous community events. His lifelong commitment to PAL began as a child when he joined a PAL Karate program, an experience he remembers vividly. As part of the Massapequa, Wantagh and Seaford Units, he uses an integrated model of martial arts as a vehicle to help students overcome ADD, ADHD and other special needs: general education students model proper behavior to coach special needs students. One of his special needs students last

year won three gold medals and nearly won the grand champion at the annual tournament. Having written letters of recommendation every year for eighteen years, and recently writing as many as twenty or thirty per year, Mr. Bachman has helped hundreds of students gain admission to colleges, summer programs, and scholarships. Nominated by Lauren N. Reisig, a former Massapequa High School student who will graduate from Harvard College in June 2016, Mr. Bachman was described as “one of the best teachers I have ever had.” “He is passionate about the subjects he teaches and passionate about the students he teaches,” explained Ms. Reisig, “pushing his students to constantly work harder and challenge themselves. And he is a resource for not only the students in his class, but any student who is willing to learn.” “The introduction to law class,” Ms. Reisig remembers, “was not accelerated, so the students ranged from those at the top of the class, to those struggling to pass.” Despite this, she concluded, “ Mr. Bachman worked to build the confidence of every student, no matter their strength.” At the ceremony on March 29, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2014 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past

winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling some of the resources available to Harvard students. They have met with faculty; visited research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoyed visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. “We are proud to honor these teachers, whose efforts enable our Long Island students to thrive at top universities and to be upstanding citizens,” said Susan Novick, Harvard Club of Long Island President. When Superintendent of Schools Lucille F. Iconis learned of this award, she noted, “Mr Bachman is an integral member of our Social Studies Department,” before adding, “passionate and driven, he teaches an array of our most advanced classes and is well-respected by his colleagues and students of all levels.” “As our Mock Trial Team advisor,” Supt. Iconis continued, “Mr. Bachman guided the team to its first Nassau County Championship title in 2012. We are extremely proud of Mr. Bachman’s contributions to the Massapequa School District and we are delighted that he is being recognized with this well-deserved honor.” This year’s fourteen Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members.

This year’s award winners teach biology, chemistry, earth science, English, government, history, math, science research, and social studies. The winners teach in the Baldwin, East Meadow, Farmingdale, Herricks, Island Trees, Lindenhurst, Manhasset, Massapequa, and Syosset school districts, as well as the Long Island School for the Gifted, the North Shore Hebrew Academy, St. Anthony’s High School, and The Stony Brook School. Previous Harvard Club of Long Island honorees from the Massapequa district include social studies teacher Jonathan Klomp in 2005 and English teacher Alice Alarcon in 2013. This year, Harvard College received 34,295 applications nationally for the Class of 2018 (597 from Long Island) and will accept slightly more than 2,000. It’s Time For Tea It’s Time For Tea, a fascinating exhibit of ceramic works of art related to tea and its accoutrements, will be on display from April 5th through June 8th at the Oyster Bay Historical Society. Created by the members of the Ceramic Media Group of the Long Island Craft Guild, the show features a creative selection of both functional and sculptural pieces. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Sunday, April 6th, from 3 to 6 p.m. Renowned ceramist Fong Choo juried the exhibit. He has taught numerous workshops both nationally and internationally. His most recent invited workshop was hosted by the Gaya Ceramic Center in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Last spring

he was a presenter in London, Ontario, Canada at the annual Fusion Clay Conference. This summer, Mr. Choo will be an Artist in Residence at the University of Tasmania in Launceston, Australia. He is currently working on a number of patroncommissioned pieces. His works have received numerous awards at The Smithsonian Craft Show, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The American Craft Exposition. He is an adjunct faculty member at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY but committed to the conscious life of a practicing studio potter. Nesting Bald Eagles Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on

Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,” said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast coast.

The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from ospreys. Ensuring that healthy fish populations –and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters is a top priority for The Conservancy. “Decades ago, protecting land was enough to ensure the survival and viability of our local wildlife, but today our efforts are concentrated on keeping the lands and especially the waters around Long Island clean and healthy,” said Nancy Kelley, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island. “It’s especially important that we do everything we can to avert threats –like nitrogen pollution in our waters –so that our majestic wildlife species can survive and thrive here.”

Regional Domination

Five teams from the Massapequa School District will compete in the New York State Odyssey of the Mind contest at Binghamton University April 12th after capturing four first-place and one second-place win at the regional tournament at Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh earlier this month. Massapequa will be represented by more teams than any other district on Long Island. Odyssey of the Mind is an International educational program based on creative problemsolving. Students select from a variety of problems that range from building mechanical devices to interpreting literary classics and compete at

the local, state and world levels. Massapequa sent 20 teams to the regional competition. Two teams, one from Fairfield and the other from Unqua, will compete at the Division I level for grades 1-5. Two more teams, one from McKenna and another from Lockhart, will compete at the Division II level for grades 6-8. These teams consist of youngsters in the district’s Magnet program for academically gifted students. A team from Massapequa High School will compete on the Division III level for grades 9-12. While five teams will advance to the state championship, several other teams still placed well at the regionals,

coming in second and third after competing against as many as 10 teams. They included Division I teams from Unqua, Fairfield and Lockhart; and Division II teams from Unqua, McKenna, East Lake, Birch Lane and Berner Middle School. “Our students demonstrated high levels of creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills throughout this process,” said Diana Haanraadts, assistant to the superintendent for Instructional Support and General Administration. “We are so proud of their accomplishments at regionals and wish them the best of luck in the state competition.”

Game Farm To Open On April 12th, the Long Island Game Farm — Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will be opening for its 45th season of providing Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all — fun. From April to September, the Game Farm will be open on different days of the week for children and adults to explore. In celebration of its 45th season, the Game Farm will be offering coupons on its Facebook page and website for $4.50 off a regular ticket price valid for the opening weekend. From domestic to exotic animals, the Long Island Game Farm has so much to offer, all while providing an outdoor educational experience. Unlike many other zoos, children get a

Opening Day — Saturday, April 12th — coincides with the start of many Long Island schools’ spring break. The Game Farm will be open the entire break (ending on

April 20) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, the Game Farm will reopen the next weekend, April 26th and 27th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well. Beginning in May, the Long Island Game Farm will be open Thursday through Sunday.
