Sixth-graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently used imagery to analyze books. Students completed a CSI project with their independent reading books. Each student decided on a color, a symbol and an image to best represent either the whole book, or a section of the story. They explained the thinking behind their choices in

their tri-fold reports, and made a presentation to their classmates. Teacher Kari Szabo designed the lesson after taking Project Zero classes at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. More than 60 teachers and administrators in Massapequa were trained in the initiative, which is supported through a partnership between the district and the Massapequa

Community Fund to create more engaging lessons that foster student discourse. “I try to incorporate these activities into my reading class whenever possible,” Ms. Szabo said. “This was our first attempt with a CSI and the students really enjoyed the project. It was a great way to share their connections and peak interests for future book choices.”

Students at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District participated in and attended the school’s annual Science Fair on March 7th. A requirement for fifthgraders and optional for students in kindergarten through fourth-grade, the fair is an opportunity for

students to select a topic of interest and complete an experiment while reinforcing the steps of the scientific method. This year’s fair featured projects such as what causes volcanoes, what makes slime, which balls bounce the highest, and various conditions under which plants will grow.

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

To further establish the sweeping transparency reforms promised by Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Oyster Bay Town Board will hold a special work session prior to the Town’s regularly scheduled Town Board meeting on Tuesday, April 4th, at 10 a.m. at Oyster Bay Town hall. The Board will publicly hear multiple proposals in response to a request for proposals for the operation of a food and beverage concession service at the Town’s Golf Course, Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced. This will be the first in a series of special meetings designed to increase and continue his mission of transparency. The work session will take place in the Town Board Hearing Room in Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and will be open to the public, who are welcome to attend and observe the process. The public is encouraged to provide input by offer their comments on the process and presentations during the public comment portion of the meeting. Additionally, the work session will be live streamed through the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “When I took office, I promised residents that a new era would begin in the Town of Oyster Bay, one with the highest ethical standards, and complete transparency, to regain the faith and trust of our residents,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The process of a request for proposals follows the letter of the law, but we wanted to do much more to provide additional transparency. The purpose of this work session is to open the doors of Town government to everyone and to ensure we are operating in complete sunlight. “We want to provide our residents with the best food and beverage services in a way that is affordable and enhances their experiences at our parks, beaches and premiere golf course,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Holding this process at a public open meeting assures that we get it done in time for this season and that we do it right.”

Long Island Picture Frame

Students are adding splashes of color throughout Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The Mural Club, led by art teachers Paul Leone and Nicole Hassell, has already created several works of art and is in the process of making more. The after-school club, in its third year of existence, is giving the fitness room a new look. The bricks are being painted various shades of yellow and blue, the colors of the Massapequa Chiefs. A modified Chief logo will then be added. The hand project continues in the first floor classroom hallway. Each graduating eighth-grader places a hand on the wall, spray paints around it, and adds their name in

black marker within their handprint. It has been a tradition since the Class of 2014, and each section has been done in a different color to create a rainbow effect. The Mural Club paints the class year above the doors in each section. Mr. Leone said the handprint idea came from a student and is a way for all graduates to leave the mark. He said the first project of the Mural Club was to paint the Chiefs logo on the door of the second-floor Chief Shop, the school store. They have also created Chief-head logos on two sets of gym doors in opposite blue and yellow color schemes, and a Berner Chiefs logo on the principal’s door. On an unused set of lockers in the middle school hallway, they painted it to look like

a piano keyboard, which was done to accurately reflect the 88 keys. For the past three years, Berner has taken part in the One School, One Book initiative, in which all students read and discuss the same book throughout the year. The Mural Club has painted the covers of each year’s selection on the glass block windows adjacent to the visitor’s entrance. Mr. Leone explained that this takes much preparation because the murals are painted backward to be seen the right way from the outside. “This club is a nice way to make friends, be creative and get a little more art into your life,” said eighthgrader Olivia Argueloes. “It’s a nice way to give the school a pop of color.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson recently attended the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and presented a citation to new inductee Joe Karam, President of the Plainedge Soccer League. The Long Island Junior

Soccer League was established in 1966 as a non-profit, educational organization, and is now one of the largest youth soccer leagues in the United States. The mission of the League is to foster the growth and development of youth through the sport of soccer.

Ancient Games

The LIJSL Hall of Fame, established in 1978, seeks to honor individuals like Joe Karam who have made significant voluntary contributions to the development of youth soccer in the Long Island Junior Soccer League.

Togas were the school uniform on March 10th for sixth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as they participated in competitive games just like the ancient Greeks and Romans. The event began with a procession to the auditorium, with one student from each of the four classes carrying a paper torch. Students recited the Olympic oath, which was about fair games and sportsmanship.

Activities included basketball dribbling, jump rope, an egg relay race and a hula-hoop human chain. The event concluded with a group singalong of “That’s Amore.” The sixth-grade social studies curriculum covers ancient civilizations. Students began the new unit by studying Greek mythology and introducing themselves as different gods and goddesses before coming together for Toga Day. “It was fun to experience

this, since we are learning about it in class,” said sixth-grader Griffin Hunt. Added Jamie Rabitz, upon wearing a toga for the first time, “It was really cool to know that they dressed like this in the past.” Food was provided by parents and represented the two cultures. Lunch options included pasta, meatballs, Greek salad, Spanakopita and Stromboli, along with Italian ices and Greek pastries for dessert.

Warming Up to Art Art students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the difference between warm colors and cool colors by creating three-dimensional projects. Led by teacher Nicole Hassell, fourth-graders used weaving and looming techniques to make webs with construction paper.

Students could choose to make warm webs with strips of red, orange and yellow paper, or cool webs with shades of green, blue and purple. In two rows of boxes on the floor made from masking tape, students carefully arranged their webs. By mixing the warm and cool colors just right, the young artists

learned about balance and composition. Ms. Hassell said the purpose of the project was to teach them a new technique that built off of the art skills they have learned in the past. The webs created by all fourth-grade students will be used for a larger art project to hang in the lobby.

Music in Our Schools A quality music education program starts at the elementary level, and that is the case in the Massapequa School District, which is celebrating Music in Our Schools month. The initiative, from the National Association for Music Education, is marked every March. After Massapequa students get their first instrumental experience in third grade with the recorder, they are able to choose an instrument in the band or orchestra beginning in fourth grade, along with an opportunity to participate in the chorus. According to Jessica Wyman, the band director at McKenna Elementary School, because students are exposed to music early and often at a young age, they are eager to begin playing an instrument. “One aspect of a child’s growth and development is the opportunity to begin music instruction as early as possible,” said Dr. David Gaines, curriculum associate for music.

“We begin instrumental studies at the age where most children have the physical ability to learn an instrument. Research continues to show that students who study an instrument in early grades demonstrate many advanced assets such as better executive function, more robust brain activity, better critical thinking, and better overall academic achievement than students who do not either start or continue with music instruction.” McKenna fourth-grader Leah Gerby chose the violin because it is the right size for her and she likes its sound. She also appreciates the challenge of playing an instrument that is unforgiving if she hits the wrong string. “You need to be patient,” Leah said. “I think it’s really fun to play an instrument,” added Brendan Ciarlo, in his first year playing the double bass. “You get to perform in front of a lot of people and it’s really exciting.” Larsen Sullivan

picked the French horn and is currently practicing songs for the spring band concert including “Conquest” and “Attack of the Slide Trombones.” He also enjoys learning how to care for an instrument. Students receive a half-hour of small-group instruction per week, and also practice on their own at home. The full band and orchestra each meet before school once a week. Fourth-grader Paige Lestingi, who plays the tuba, said she likes hearing how the sounds of all the different instruments come together. Throughout March, students are participating in the Harry Chapin Practice-A-Thon. The young musicians document their daily practice time and get sponsors to pledge an amount per minute played, with donations benefitting Long Island Cares.
