Johnson, the current season of winter transforming into spring presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. “If you flip through the pages of the 2014 Town Calendar you’ll see some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications.” The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Kids Of Distinction Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding

young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. In celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Kids of Distinction program the Kids Helping Kids

Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2,000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction

program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease and listened to a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN and hosted by Patricia M. Lazazzaro, author of My Love, which chronicles her husband’s struggle against Alzheimer’s Disease. Additionally, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented “The New Long-Term Care Landscape - Benefiting from the Changes.” During lunch, guests listened to the keynote address, sponsored by Royal Health Care Services, and given by CBS Correspondent Barry Petersen. Mr. Petersen explained his struggles as a caregiver for his wife Jan, who suffered from Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Not only did he express his emotions, but

he offered helpful tips and insights pertaining to his personal caregiving. After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session showing/screening of the film The Genius of Marian. The movie presented the filmmaker’s mother, Pam White, through her early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. The film’s producer, Banker White, appeared via Skype after the film to answer any questions that attendees might have had. Alzheimer’s Conference Held

There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

District Celebrates 100 Kindergartners around the Massapequa School District showcased their counting skills with a host of activities that marked the 100th day of school. Students at East Lake Elementary School found their “inner divas” by designing original 100thDay T-shirts and modeling them down a red carpet, while students at Birch Lane and Lockhart elementary schools quickly “aged” by dressing as centenarians.

McKenna Elementary School students measured and colored a snake 100 inches long and followed 100 paper hearts to the principal’s office where they received a surprise, while Fairfield Elementary School students drew 10 dots on paper ladybugs and counted by tens to 100. At Unqua Elementary School, they made necklaces with 100 fruit loops, built towers with 100 red cups, matched numbers on a number chart, and

picked 10 items from 10 containers for goodie bags. Other festivities included making 100 day hats, illustrating a portrait of themselves at 100 years old, doing 100 exercises, sorting 100 unifix cubes in groups of 10 and participating in math and English language arts activities centered on the number 100. The children also shared 100 treats that they brought from home with their classmates.

They delivered menus listing a variety of sandwiches and salads, along with instructions on how to place an order. So far, the program has been a win-win venture for both staff and students. “We are constantly looking for new skillbuilding opportunities for our Life Skills students and this initiative is an excellent

way to develop their social and task execution skills while boosting their confidence,” said Jean Castelli, executive director for Special Education and Student Support Services. “It’s always a pleasure to see our students venture into something new to expand their skillset,” added Superintendent Lucille Iconis. “The staff has embraced the opportunity to have lunch delivered to their desks and we all look forward to seeing these students improve their skills in the weeks ahead.”

DISTRICT CELEBRATES 100 - Birch Lane centenarians are proud to be 100.

A new recipe for success is cooking up at Massapequa High School. Through a new collaborative effort, spearheaded by the district’s School Lunch Director Paul Heckelman, special needs students in the Life Skills program are gaining valuable job skills by delivering lunch orders from the school cafeteria to the administrative staff on a daily basis. The Life Skills program, otherwise known as the Community Career Connections program, is designed to support students with severe disabilities to develop interest in potential careers

project to develop a handson presentation for girls that encourages them to develop their math and science skills. She also participated in robotics, track and has been a member of the tennis team throughout her high school career. “Brian and Luciana are model STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students,” said Susan Thompson, Massapequa’s chairperson of Career & Technology Education. “They are wellrounded, hard-working, positive students who are open to innovation.” At the end of the program, Northrop Grumman will host a celebration for interns, mentors, parents, teachers and school administrators. Using a PowerPoint presentation, the interns will explain the work they have accomplished and provide feedback on their internship experience. This is the fourth year Massapequa High School has participated in this program.

Two Massapequa High School students out of 25 Island-wide made the highly competitive cut to participate in the Northrop Grumman High School Involvement Partnership (HIP) internship program. Seniors Brian O’Sullivan and Luciana Tangari began the seven-week program, which explores topics such as computer programming, communications technology and aircraft electromagnetics. So far, the students learned about structural engineering and received an assignment to build a weight-bearing bridge that will be tested later in the program. Both students take advanced math and science courses and are planning to pursue careers in engineering or computer science. Brian is a member of the robotics team, which just competed at the state competition at Adelphi University. He also runs cross country. Luciana, one of only two females in the program, plans as her Girl Scout Gold Award

Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing Programs slated to start in April, according to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. Participants may choose one day per week to take part in either Zumba, Yoga or Cardio Kickboxing for the 12-week programs. The Zumba program starts the week of Monday, April 7th and will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. or Wednesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Yoga program starts the week of Tuesday, April 8th will be conducted Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. or Saturdays

from 9 to 10 a.m. The Cardio Kickboxing class starts the week of Monday, April 7th and will be held Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. or Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the resident discount. “Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing are physical activities that help improve stamina and overall condition, “Councilwoman Alesia said. “Studies have also shown that frequent exercise is a great stress reliever.” Councilwoman Alesia noted that registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville,

on Tuesday, April 1st and Thursday, April 3rd from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 5th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. After these dates, registration will continue in the Hicksville Athletic Center office based on availability.
