As I promised last year when I had to make the tough decision to cancel this project, this storm is something that this Town would come back from, and I am proud to say that Tobay beach, including the entirety of its dunes and facilities, have been restored to its former glory.” Supervisor Venditto noted that projects such as this are important for numerous reasons, chief amongst them being that the planting of the grass helps to stabilize and enlarge our dunes, helping to provide a natural barrier against storm surge and high winds, as well as protecting the delicate ecosystem of the surrounding areas. At the

last Dune Stabilization Project in March 2012, over 1,100 volunteers turned out for the event and planted more than 230,000 stalks of dune grass. Supervisor Venditto went on to state that as in years past, volunteers are needed to help plant dune grass. Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. my job,” Krasilovsky said. “I have total creative freedom. It’s challenging,” she added. “You have to prove yourself. But it’s also really rewarding. Every time I see someone wearing one of my designs I feel such a sense of accomplishment.” She credits Nassau BOCES for helping to pave the way. “Everyday after school my teachers would work with me on my portfolio. BOCES really prepared me for college and, ultimately, my career.” Krasilovsky, who lives and works in New York City, is a natural in her field. By the age of 13 she knew she wanted to go into design and pursued her love through programs at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After attending the Long Island High School for the Arts, she attended Parsons New School for Design, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. “Traci was an outstanding student in the art department,” said her former art teacher and mentor Rae Raff. “She is conscientious and talented in the extreme. We are very proud of her and her wonderful accomplishments. It is no surprise she is such a remarkable success.”

SEEING EYE DONATIONS - The Cubs Scouts of Pack 5 in Massapequa recently had a special guest, Rosanna Beaudrie, from the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown, attend their pack night. The boys learned about how important it is to train guide dogs from when they are young and how they help the blind. They collected donations to help fund the training of these special dogs. Many brought newspapers, towels, wipes, dog toys and more. A special thanks to Rosanna Beaudrie and her dog for a wonderful presentation.

Expanding Horizons According to the EYH Network, girls become most interested in these areas of study when they are in middle school. This season, SBPLI had 110 elementary and middle school teams compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments; of those teams, 13 teams were fully comprised of Girl Scouts from Nassau and Suffolk Counties. “It is encouraging to see girls and young women take part in our robotics programs, especially

The Massapequa High School Robotics Team, Robo Chiefs, is gearing up to compete in its first VEX Robotics New York State Championship competition at Adelphi University, March 8th, after placing first in two qualifying tournaments. The VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, challenges middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to compete in an engineering challenge in the form of a game. Teams use the VEX Robotics Design System to build robots designed to score the most points possible in qualification matches, elimination matches and Skills Challenges. The Robo Chiefs won the championship title and the Design Award at the VEX Robotics Competition at East Rockaway High School, Feb. 1. A week later, they took first place at the Adelphi University Toss Up Qualifier with a final round score of 47-0 and won the Tournament Champions Award as well as the highest judges’ award, the Excellence Award. When the teams compete, they work together with other teams as an alliance. In the qualification rounds, many times the teams are assigned alliance teams they do not know and must quickly develop a strategy that will work best for them. In the elimination rounds, the teams choose their alliance partners to develop a strategy. The Robo Chiefs went undefeated at the Adelphi tournament in both the qualification and elimination rounds, placing

first in the qualification rounds while in a three-way alliance with Jericho and East Rockaway. Team members Shane Murphy, Liam Byrnes-Cunningham, Robert DePietro, Richard Gordonson, Christina DeLuca, Brian O’Sullivan, Sarah Goklevent and Adam Carrero are excited to bring Massapequa to the state championship. “The team’s biggest strengths are cooperation, teamwork and dedication,” said Coach Brian Vanek.

“As long as the students continue to work together they will be great at the state competition. But what is more important than the trophies is the teamwork, cooperation, problem solving and robot designing; and the students have done a fantastic job already this year.” The Massapequa School District nurtures students’ interest in robotics as early as elementary school with introductory lessons in the district’s academically gifted

program, Magnet. In middle school, every student receives an introduction to robotics in 7th- and 8thgrade technology education classes. Robotics clubs at the middle and high school levels are offered during the school year and a one-week camp for middle schoolers is provided over the summer and coached by Vanek. The high school level also offers robotics as part of the Principles of Engineering course and the Product Design and Engineering (Robotics) course, and is introduced in the Digital Electronics course. According to Susan Thompson, career & technology education chairperson for the district, two areas of technology that will have a major impact on the future, are robotics and 3D printing. “Many students take the step to join the middle or high school robotics teams and take advanced courses beginning with Design & Drawing for Production in 9th grade. In this course students learn to draw in a 3D modeling program and prototypes are printed on a 3D printer. By creating parts and building and programming robots, these students are not only developing creativity, innovation and collaboration skills, they are developing a lifelong, success mindset. That was so obvious to me as I watched our team compete. They were in a hyper-strategizing and problem-solving mode throughout the day. Their focus and hard work paid off with a fantastic win.”

CLASSIC OLDIES - Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto recently attended a Classic Oldies Show honoring the Columbus Lodge order of Sons of Italy in America, The Knights of Columbus and the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce for all the Community Service that they provide. Hundreds of parents took advantage of the Education Expo held at Plainedge High School on February 24th. With the theme of “Raising Uncommon Children in a Common Core World,” the expo featured more than 25 workshops in two sessions and a keynote address by Michael Keany, who has more than 34 years in public education.

Topics included successfully navigating the middle school years, bullying, using the parent portal and mastering various Common Core-related skills. The two-and-a-half hour event also featured student artwork and performances from various music groups and cheerleaders in the district. “There are a lot of

Randi O’Moore, a work experience teachercoordinator at the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center (Barry Tech), was recognized by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) as its 2014 Educator of the Year. She was selected for the award from hundreds of educators across the region. In her six years as a teacher-coordinator for 20 career programs (including automotive technology), O’Moore has placed hundreds of students in career fields annually, by establishing them in shadow days, internships and paid work

experiences. She has helped her students to gain industry employment, guiding them through the interview process and following up with them repeatedly after they have been placed, to smooth the process and to track their performance. Her work with industry partners is invaluable, both to her students and to the local business community. “Randi O’Moore is a dedicated educator who believes that one person can make a difference in the life of a young person,” said her mentor, GNYADA Education and Training Consultant Stephen Mercaldo, at the

official awards ceremony. “Many of her graduates can trace their successful careers to her guidance and encouragement.
